Encounters
      #142315 - 12/23/06 07:47 AM (128.176.216.116)

Lt. Kimball surveyed the rough terrain of the battlefield, easing his Firestarter up a wooded slope to get a better look at things. He observed a few creaking noises, where armor plates got damaged, making him uneasy. A look at his damage control screen told him that everything was fine, nothing major – just a few scratches in the armor actually. His uneasiness, he told himself, was just the usual paranoia veteran Mechwarriors tend to develop about anything acting not quite normal in their priceless machinery.

He counted the shredded remains of at least a dozen Scorpion tanks in his immediate vicinity. Thin wisps of smoke rising straight into the still air, and an occasional red glow lighting up the trees in the growing dusk marked other spots further away, where about twenty more Scorpions got destroyed.

The Firestarter came to a halt on an open ridge. Apart from the silent humming of his systems, complete silence was around him. The adrenaline level in his blood slowly subsiding, he started thinking over the events of this long day. Those tank crews must have been really green. The clumsy way they moved between the trees, through narrow gorges and up steep hills, the awkward wobbling of the autocannon barrels trying to get a shot at him – apart from a few lucky hits hardly one of them even got a lock on his Mech. He wondered who was responsible for sending a whole battallion of inexperienced tanks into this terrible terrain, and if that person would get away with it. Probably will, as always, he thought. The big heads always do.

Something crackled in the brush a little lower on the slope where he stood. Immediately, he threw around his mech, aiming his Machine guns at the source of the noise. Peeping at his IR scanner, he saw the outlines of a single man, working his way through the thick brambles. When the man cleared the brambles hardly 10 metres away from his mech, Kimball looked into a face pale as the moon. A face so young, he wondered if it ever had close contact with a razor. A thin line of blood trickled down his forehead, darkening the collar of his cadet’s uniform. Apart from that little head wound, he seemed unharmed. The figure froze, eyes wide open, mouth gaping in shock, suddenly aware of the Mech looming over him. For a few seconds he didn’t move at all, a dark stain slowly growing on the front of his trousers. Then the young man fell to his knees, clutching his breast with both hands, as if to hug himself. Through the external microphone, Kimball heard silent sobbing. He stared at the young man for a few seconds, then turned his mech away and moved north, where his lance commander was waiting a few kilometres away. He hit the comm button.

'Harry, you hear me?‘
'Nice and clear', Captain Conklin’s voice came through the intercom. 'What’s up?'
'Did I ever tell you that I hate this job?'

Well... actually, I don't really intend to write more. Not about this particular incident, that is. It is just that I complained about the lack of roleplay in public mail a few days before Christmas. Only complaining and doing nothing won't help, though. So I thought that it might be nice to take a noteworthy situation I encounter now and then, and write a short paragraph about it here. A fun LW battle, an arena, whatever. A loose collection of "Nev moments" if you want. Everyone is of course invited to do the same, so that I don't have to cough up stuff every week all on my own, hehe. Come on, guys. The book of encounters needs more chapters. You know you want to :-)

Call for contributions [Re: KingDiamond]
      #142456 - 12/27/06 09:24 AM (128.176.216.116)

Thinking about it... maybe I am naive, but I'll try anyway:

Inspired by the HoC archive... lets make 'encounters' a real book. Not a history account, like the HoC archive. More like a collection of remarkable moments I am sure everyone has had on Nev. All of you who like to, write short flicks of any noteworthy incident that comes to mind. Send them to me, hit me up in chat (KD) or post them here, together with a short outline of the situation/conflict in which the incident happened. I will volunteer to edit them together (without changing the actual text of course - authenticity is more important than perfect style), and I'll write a short foreword to every contribution. Lets see if we can get a nice compilation together. Already existing roleplay texts like the DeeDee stuff would be incuded, with your permission.

As I said, probably a naive call, but worth a try anyway. Up to you, guys. Show me how creative you can be :-)

Could it possibly be true...? Does the creativity of the Neveron community exhaust itself in Hoppy-bashing...? You got to be kidding, guys.

@ Nimlord: This is not about winning the Pulitzer Award. You can't know if your stories are good or if they suck before you tried :-)

The emperor surveyed the tattered remains of his once proud empire trying to decide how to rebuild. His alliance leader had taken ill and refused to hand over the reigns of power and as a result a series of wars and jihad's had torn his faction asunder.

All that remained of the empire were a couple of lances of SCP-A1s and a few platoons of Jump SRM infanty that had been hidden away in underground bunkers. Commmands were sent out to move the last remains of the army to the largest of his remaining city, a small village of 300 souls. Tanks and infanty dug in along a ridge and waited for the jackels to come.

In a few short weeks communcations came giving word that yet another faction had declared war. With the war coffers bare all that could be done was wait until enemies arrived and fight back to the last man. In the dark of night alarms went off in the lone remaining sensor tower which had detected a incomming landing craft. Shorty there after seismic sensors and remote camers detected a Crockett assault mech. As the Crockett moved towards the defenders postion, tanks opened up with a barrage of AC-5 rounds battering away at the torso armor of the mech. A few minutes later the Crockett had jumped up onto the ridge trying to crush the tanks beneath the bulk of the mech. With uncanny skill the tanks pumped every machine gun and auto cannon into the torso of the mech rendering opening a breach. As the defending tanks exploded under the relentless fire of the mechs autocannons, lasers and srm launchers the remaining infanty were ordered to aim for the torso and open up with there srms. A single srm round set off a series of explosions in the ammo remaining in the mech destroying the torso and spraying the mech warrior with shrapnel as he tried to eject from the doomed mech.

With that victory the emperor vowed he would not go quietly in the dark night, he would rebuild and fight back, let them come and be destroyed.

There we go. Not all that bad. Could you provide me with a little info about the general situation in which this happened? I don't need empire names if you don't want to. The involved factions would do.
