Who here likes Victors?
      #28285 - 04/24/02 09:06 PM (192.195.234.26)

I know a few people who like using the Victor battlemech, but most people I know cannot stand it. I am talking about the 3025, tech level 1 version here. Does anyone actually like the Victor?

In level 1 alot of units including mediums and one or two light mechs cannot outrun this thing. 80 tons with a AC20 and jumps? Yep not a bad thing. Its armour is a bit light for its size but still in many situations it has turned defeat into victory or given their enemies pain in victory. Plus the sheer fear of being hit with the biggest mech weapon in the game at the time does help things.

It`s got too little (none at all) long-range fire power to make
any gamer I know happy. The armor is none too impressive
either, considering it`s supposed to go into close combat.
Only good thing is that it`s got jump jets, allowing it to keep
up with the really nasty machines - like Grasshoppers.

Specialist use only for me. Strike lance, paired with some
others that also jump. The afore-mentioned Grasshopper
and perhaps a Catapult or two are good candidates.
Hmm 1 Victor, 2 Grasshoppers and 1 Catapult?

Good call on that scary-as-s#$@ AC20. I hate facing things that carry those monsters.

Good thing to do is to pair a Victor with an Archer or two. The AC20 keeps enemies in hammering range of the LRM's. One of my favorite tactics.

The Victor is one of those mechs that you have to use tactics to get the most out of it, running up and trying to bash your way throught the other side doesn't work with this one.

I have had decent luck with Victors in level 1 play and find them to be a lot fun to use.

I loved it originally, mostly due to its press time in Sword and the Dagger.

I came to realize it was rather undergunned, like an oversized Hunchback. However, I'm still favorable toward the original.

I like the 3025 Victor. Yeah its light on armor, but no other 3025 assault mech can jump. I have had good success with it. You can't wade into the thick of it like you can with a Battlemaster. You have to be smart and use its manuverability. I did make a 3025 variant that I called the Avenger, that downgraded the movement to 3/5/3 but I was able to install a large laser and IIRC I upgraded the SRM to a 6 pack. I worked up several variants of the 3050 version that swap out the Gauss for an LBX-20 or UAC-20.

It's okay, but it needs backup for those situations that call for long-range firepower.

Victors are annoying, when you are piloting one you get wasted too quickly. However when you are fighting one the damn thing just wont die.

I was about to state the same thing, you just beat me to it.
It becomes a real nice mech if you exchange the SRM4 for a LRM5. Lets you pick at an opponent until you can get close enough to bring the AC20 to bear.

Victors have always been a solid Mech on the sandtable miniatures games I play. They are at a disadvantage when faced with a lot of flat, open terrain (duh), but you ignore them at your peril. If Victors don't get softened up before they get in range, they have plenty of mobility and shot to dish out some serious hurt. It's been proven time and again on the sandtable.

Well.... upgrade the AC 20 to a Guass Rifle and the armor to FF, and you have a nasty range fighter with mobility and staying power. I know, you could build a better one, but as a minimal upgrade, it's pretty effective.

Heck, drop 5 HS, replace the others with double, upgrade to the Guass (1 ton), add 2 tons of armor and make it FF (242 pts, 5 down from max), replace the SRM 4 with 2 streak 2's (or up it to a six), and add one more Med Laser.

I've had great success with Victors in the past. Like every mech, I've also had dismal failiures.

Vast tracks of open terrain is the Victor's enemy. It likes woods, large amounts of hills, and other terrains that allow it to play hide and seak.

Best use for me has been when using with other mechs (Stalker, Warhammer, etc). Opponents are given the choice of concentrate on the victor and take it out before it gets into range, or try to stop those guys setting in back that are hammering you turn after turn. The AC-20 normaly insures that my other units won't be getting too much attention for a bit. And, when the Victor get's into range (decent chances... 3025 doesn't put mechs away realy quick without a wild lucky streak or loads of firepower), it's going to unleash a serrious level of hurt (if it hits).

I find they are almost unbeatable in cities and forests. Anywhere else, I like having long range back-up and moving like my life depends on it, because it does.

Target practice for a clanner, eh?

During the Martial Olypmics, I took my 3025 forces up against Clan forces.

My Victor 9A squared off against a Masakari-D, aided only by a Goblin ISV.

I beat the DAYLIGHTS out of that Mas.

Then I went on to set his command post on fire. (VTR-9A has two flamers) Durn thing burned down, nothing he could do about it. Well, that is, except to puch several holes in my Victor with his Vulture C. But that was phyrric...it was already too late.

I think the Victor ROCKS. It was a primary component of most of my MO battles. Tell you what...when you have a Demolisher & a Victor on the same field, the enemy will treat you very cautiously.

I never really did...
      #39905 - 09/24/02 01:08 AM (63.165.229.56)

Until early last year when I started playing in a level 1 campaign for one of my friends. Our unit was about company sized and he built his half (we each controlled a demi-company) around a couple of Whitworths (another 'mech I didn't much care for at the time), and a Victor (he wanted the 'mechs and I liked some other ones we had better, so I let him have them). Over the course of several months of gaming almost weekly, we added another two lances. I was fairly impressed with how he used the pair or trio (we haven't played for a while now, so I'm not sure the exact number any more) of Victors he ended up with. We had a good mix of 'mechs, but most were fairly mobile (about 3/4 of them jumped).

Anyway, my buddy did what was suggested in some of the other posts...he used the Whitworths a fire support to soften the enemy as the approached to try to knock the Victors out. As the unit grew, we got some Catapults and started using them to support the Victors.

In conclusion, I guess, I really like the Victor as part of a team (even if it's the heaviest part of the team, 'cause then it'll draw other 'mechs into range of it's fire support). It has a specialized roll, but is not totally helpless alone. Still, if I had to pick one 'mech, and were forced to use it by itself, I can think of several level 1 heavy 'mechs I would take before I took the Victor in most cases.

'he used the Whitworths a fire support'

Ahhhh yes a solid performer that mech even if it uses the inefficient LRM10. Its great value for c-bills and fairly mobile for 3025.

The 3025 Victor(s) are all just great to play with in any era. The trick is to get in close to whatever poor fool you are fighting and give him that AC/20 AFTER your other 'Mechs have softened up the target. Once his armor is stripped he isn't going to want to tangle with that weapon, or the SRMs it carries as Crit-Finders. The Victor had great mobility for an assault 'Mech, and as long as you can use terrain wisely and use tactics, the Victor is a great tool to have. The only drawback was the relatively light armor it mounted.

One thing I do is pair the Victor with something with good long range firepower, preferably armed with PPCs (or ERPPCs). Something like a MAD-3R is good. The paired PPCs and AC/5 are good for scrubbing off armor from a target. Then once it's in close enough, the Victor goes in for the killing blow.

I had a lance once that I loved using that consisted of a
VTR-9B Victor
MAD-3D Marauder
HBK-4P Swayback
VND-1R Vindicator.
And I would just make sure the 'Mechs could always support one another. So I would pick the closest 'Mech and catch it in a cross-fire between the Maruader and Vindicator, preferribly in some secluded location with the Swayback and its 8 ML as security. And if the target did get close it would normally be riddled with holes and by then the Victor would pounce, supported at close range by the Swayback. Meanwhile the Vindicator and Maruader were working on the next victim.

All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.
