TO: Star League Defence Force, Dept. Of the Quartermaster, Tukayyid

FROM: Crosby 'Mech Research Firm, Luthien

RE: Star League BattleMech Contract #4590-A

To whom it may concern,

We at the Crosby 'Mech Research Firm have recently been contracted by the DCMS to provide the Combine with a BattleMech that can replace the old Kintaro found on our front-lines. We have obtained permission from First Lord (and Coordinator of the Draconis Combine), Theodore Kurita, to offer the same design to you for review. Although our small factories will not be able to produce large numbers of the 'Mech for the SLDF, we are prepared to sell the liscencing rights to the Com Guards, and the Wolf’s Dragoons, with the understainding that a portion of the BattleMechs produced at those facilities will be made available to the DCMS. These groups should provide enough manufacturing power to meet your needs. Should this bid be accepted, the greater demand for our machinery will lower overall costs for both the DCMS and SLDF. We also understand that our MRM system is foreign to most SLDF technicians and are prepared to offer a training course in its maintenance to any interested parties.

Type: SS-O Sassori
Technology Base: Inner Sphere, Draconis Combine 3060
Mass: 55 Tons
Chassis: SS Endo Steel
Power Plant: Core Tek 275
Cruising Speed: 54.0 kph
Maximum Speed: 86.4 kph
Armour: SS with CASE
Armament:
3 Shigunga MRM-10 Launchers
3 Diverse Optics Type 428 ER Medium Lasers
2 Diverse Optics Type 810 ER Small Lasers
Communications System: Wasat Type 2
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor Type 8b
Primary Manufacturer: Crosby 'Mech Research Firm
Primary Factory: Luthien

OVERVIEW

The Sassori (Scorpion) is a new BattleMech being tested out on Luthien. As a practical neccessities, it had to cost not much more than the Kintaro, and incorporate similar weaponry in similar locations. It would also have to be an easy 'Mech for the hordes of inexperienced MechWarriors who have flooded into the DCMS under the ageis of the Phoenix Programs. The Sassori has performed well in all tests so far, and we believe that it meets the criteria set out under your contract bid.

CAPABILITIES

This BattleMech has been designed for ease of use. A trio of MRMs allow the pilot to inflict heavy damage upon an opponent. Opponents of the MRM argue that its MRMs do not have sufficient range to adequetely engage an opponent, but recent studies have indicated that as a direct result of new technologies introduced in recent years, 90% of battlefield combat between BattleMechs occurs at ranges of 400 metres or less, where the MRM’s limited range is inconsequential.

Further firepower is provided by the trio of Medium Lasers mounted across the arms and head of the 'Mech. These lasers are in their ER variant, allowing the pilot to target enemies up to 360 metres away.

Finally, ,the 'Mech is equipped with a pair of ER Small Lasers, allowing it to engage in limited anti-infantry operations.

VARIANTS

We are prepared to offer several variants on the base chassis, all of which are more expensive and use Ferro-Fibrous armour plating.

SS-O2: This variant removes the Centre Torso MRM rack and replaces it with an ER Large Laser for long-range combat. This variant, though more expensive, is slowly gaining favour amongst test pilots because of the ER Large Laser’s range capabilities.

SS-O3: This variant will remove the ER Medium Laser in the 'Mech’s head to mount a C3 Slave unit. The DCMS is deploying C3 units at a record rate, and the SLDF has begun to use them in limited deployment as well.

SS-O4: This radical variant requires a major overhaul of the design, removing one MRM and the head-mounted ER Medium Laser in order to equip the 'Mech with an ER Small Laser and a C3 Master Computer.

SS-O5: This variant mounts standard medium lasers in place of the ER models, trading in range for greater heat dissipation abilities.

DEPLOYMENT

The DCMS wants us to begin production by the end of the year.

COST ANALYSIS

The SS-O costs only 5,030,731 C-Bills, well under the specified budget of 5,148,429 C-Bills we were given. The SS-O2 costs 5,375,606 C-Bills, massively over budget. This cost is, however, directly attributable to the use of the ER Large Laser. Likewise, the SS-O3, equipped with cutting-edge C3 equipment, costs a monstrous 5,639,106 C-Bills The SS-O4 is the most expensive of the series, because it uses a C3 Master Computer, and costs 7,424,474 C-Bills. The SS-O5, cheapest of the ER Large Laser series because of its Standard Medium Lasers, costs 5,189,606 C-Bills, which is comparable to the original Shadow Hawk.

BVs

SS-O: 1,174
SS-O2: 1,210
SS-O3: 1,201 (+140 for C3)
SS-O4: 1,297 (+123 for C3)
SS-O5: 1,233

MY BLURB

Hhmmm….

This did not work out as well as I had hoped it would. It did not even come in under budget in most cases. Ah well. It appears the MRMs were a bit of a mistake, since they took up too much tonnage to make them worthwhile.

I embarked on the series using Ferro-Fibrous and ER Large Lasers because of what I felt were flaws in the standard, MRM-equipped model.

Movement is hampered because it does not have Jump Jets, but other than that it should be a solid performer.

Overall, though, I would prefer a Megaera to this.

OVERVIEW

Ever since we first purchased Crab-Class BattleMechs from the Com Guards, we have relied upon them in battle. These 'Mechs have developed a reputation for toughness and heavy firepower, and are favourites amongst our line forces. Once the standard-issue Medium 'Mech in the Star League, we hope that it will assume its place once more.

CAPABILITIES

Now equipped with Double Heat Sinks and ER Lasers, the Crab has found a new life on the battlefield. Paired Blakenburg Large Lasers provide the Crab with 180 metres of additional range, allowing it to engage enemies at extreme distances. The trio of ER Medium Lasers which have replaced and added to the old Medium and Small lasers used by the original likewise add to its engagement profiles.

On this BattleMech, the high-heat ER Lasers are most welcome. In fact the 'Mech can dissipate nearly 90% of its total heat output.

VARIANTS

The Com Guard are willing to offer their expertise and have graciously offered to share their CRB-C3i refit with both the DCMS and the SLDF. We are also prepared to offer a model which employs Triple Strength Myomers.

DEPLOYMENT

The Com Guard have already deployed their variant, outlined below. We have already begun limited production on Luthien, sending 3 Crabs per month out to our front-line forces.

COST ANALYSIS

The standard-model Crab costs 4,640,374 C-Bills. The TSM model costs 5,690,374 C-Bills.

BVs

CRB-SLDF: 1,214
CRB-TSM: 1,270

MY BLURB

Most of what I have to say about the Crab is in the Com Guard Retrofit thing I did, presented below. The whole Black Knight thing has had me looking at a lot of old SLDF designs, and I will post my retrofits here as they become available. Until then, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

OVERVIEW

After the spectacular failures of the CRB-30 Crab during its training and testing cycles, we have been forced to consider other avenues for upgrading the venerable and common Crabs serving in the Com Guards. This relatively simple upgrade is currently being tested, and initial reports are much more promising than those of the CRB-30.

CAPABILITIES

Swapping the old RAM Tech Large Lasers of the Star League model for more advanced and available ER Large Lasers, the new Crab almost doubles its striking range. Also upgraded are the smaller Ceres Arms Medium laser and ExoStar Small laser found on the older Crabs; they have been replaced with a trio of ER Medium Lasers.

The Crab’s dilapidated single heat sinks were replaced with a new set of ‘freezers’, and four extra heat sinks were added to the chassis. Although this provides the Crab with 60% greater heat dissipation, the Crab cannot use its ER Large Lasers in tandem with the ER Mediums. However, using all of its armament save a single ER Large Laser allows the Crab to inflict serious damage whilst still running cool.

DEPLOYMENT

Still undergoing testing on Luthien, the CRB-C3i Crab is expected to begin deployment late next year.

MY BLURB

Ugh. How can those howling barbarians at FASA call the CRB-30 a Crab with a straight face? XL Engine, ER PPCs…they made a mockery of one of the best 50-tonners in existence.

This is not much better, but it remains closer to the Crab’s roots, and also does not employ one of those $#@&ing Inner Sphere XL Engines.

CBN-2C Cambion

Chassis: Unknown
Power Plant: Magna 250

Maximum Speed: 86
Jump Jets: none
Jump Capacity: none
Armor: Unknown
Armament:

1 LRM 10
2 Medium Lasers
2 ER Small Lasers
1 ER Medium Laser
1 Medium Pulse Laser
Manufacturer: Unknown
Primary Factory: Unknown
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
The CBN-2C Cambion is the latest attempt by the
unsuccessful-yet-still-ambitious designers from Johnson 'Mechworks
Inc. In response to SLDF contract #4590-A, the Cambion design was
thrown together and, if selected, will represent the first JMInc.
design to actually see production. The 'Mech's rather simple design
and abundant auxiliary weapons systems allow for a variety of minor
variants to optimize it for battle- or pilot-specific preferences.
(Warning to testers: the so-called "working prototype" is not nearly
as "working" as it appears. The ER Medium laser was scavenged from a
battlefield after more than a year exposed to the elements, the LA
medium laser is as likely as not to short out, disabling the central
targeting system, and the LRM-15, while impressive-looking, is
actually a replica shell built into the torso, since JMInc. was
unable to aquire one for real) Since there is currently no
production facility, the factory, when built, can be outfitted to
accomodate whatever makes and models of equipment requested by the
SLDF.

Capabilities:
The CBN-2C Cambion is a surprisingly versatile 'Mech. The
odd-looking mismatched LRMs provide substantial long-range fire, and
the mixed bag of lasers are likely to discourage many light 'Mechs
from closing inside the LRMs' minimum range. Heat buildup is
negligible unless the LRMs are fired at close range, and even then, a
single Alpha Strike is unlikely to cause severe heat problems. The
'Mech is designed without lower arms, allowing the four arm-mounted
lasers to be fired to the rear if necessary. The designers opted
against incuding CASE in the main design, but risk of an ammo hit is
slight--the LRM-10 ammo is very difficult to hit in the head, while
the limited supply of LRM-15 rounds are likely to be spent before the
'Mech starts taking critical damage. However, many design variants
can incorporate CASE, as described below. The biggest drawback of
the design is its limited long-range endurance, but the Cambion's
good speed, heavy armor, and impressive short-range abilities can
keep it an effective fighter right to the end.

Variants:
Being only in the prototype stage, the CBN-2C Cambion has many
potential variants which can be incorporated before the 'Mech rolls
off the assembly line. One of the more promising variants, the 2L,
removes the CT Pulse Laser and adds Artemis IV FCS to each of the
missile racks. This increases its punch at long range, but at a
substantial cost. The proposed 2M variant eliminates a major worry
by adding CASE to protect the LRM ammo in the LeftTorso, and also
provides some anti-infantry support by replacing the Pulse Laser with
a pair of Machine Guns (CT/RT). The 1/2 ton of ammo is placed in the
newly-enCASEd Left Torso. The 3J plan also removes the Pulse Laser,
this time adding jump capability up to 120 metres. There are other
possible variations as well, most trading the CT lasers for CASE
(LT), light lasers, and electronics, such as a C3 slave computer.
The resulting drop in heat from the removal of the CT lasers allows
the upgrade, if desired, of the arm-mounted mediums to the more
potent ER models.
