>>Just out of curiosity, what did the "rampaging" Challenger do?<<

Let me see...first, it ripped off the Urban Defender's LA, then, after the UD's other UAC/10 jammed, it tore apart a Rifleman in two turns. Following the Rifleman's rather abrupt ending, the Challenger joined the Hydra to thoroughly mangle the AmmoMan with a single volley. The only active B 'Mech at that point was the Urban Defender, which was trying to finish off the Thunderbolt(A) with physical attacks, but the Challenger casually lopped off its LL, ending that threat. So, its "rampage" consisted of disabling or destroying 3 'Mechs in 4 rounds, then mopping up what was left. Gotta love those heavy ACs

Well, the AmjmoMan's OS launchers are all Streaks so naturally they all hit. I don't recall specifically what damage they did, but I remember they were held back until there were holes in the armor to be exploited.

Thanks Kamikaze, I was just wondering. I am trying to prove that OS launchers can actually be useful weapons. Of course the lighter Improved OS Missiles are much better.

I think in general, OS launchers are more useful on hit-and-run "raiding" 'Mechs that run in, fight for 1 or 2 rounds, then get the ]-[3\_\_ out of there OS Streaks at least guarantee that the weapon won't be a complete waste :-\

When you just don`t dare tack on any more medium lasers, then perhaps. I don`t think mechs should have one-use weapons taking up valuable tonnage and crit space.

I`d happily use OS Streaks on cheapo tanks though, like Cray`s idea with a Rocket Launcher truck.

Why? The Streaks all hit, and don`t fire if they didn`t
get a lock. Sure worth more than something with a -1

Multiple OS launchers are worthless, true...unless:
a) crit space is severely limited
b) you don't want the risk of ammo hits.

I don't like OS LRMs, because LRMs don't really have a short range (unless you're Clan), and because LRMs are support weapons anyway. SRMs, however, espacially Streak, have some (although limited) appeal. A single SSRM 4 or 6 adds significant firepower to a 'Mech that will only be in the battle very briefly, and the half ton you save by not loading ammo can be well used for armor (even 8 points can be significant on a 20-tonner).

As I said...if the 'Mech's primary purpose is other than combat, OS Streaks can be useful.

Ok...I finally realized that the lance-on-lance battles were taking far too long, so in the interest of finally wrapping this thing up, I'm ending Trial 2 after only 2 rounds, instead of the 5rounds I had planned. This leaves only the Trial 3 free-for-all and the Final Four elimination matches, which I should be able to complete fairly quickly. So without further adieu, here are the final Trial 2 results.

7) (A) Apocalypse / Trance Cobra vs Torment / Drakkar (B)
This was an exciting, fast-paced battle which alternated between sheer close-range chaos, and scatterd duels, and the outcome was kept in doubt until the bitter end. The battle began with the Apocalypse and the Thunderbolt(B) clashing near the middle of the arena, both soaking up massed firepower from their respective enemies. Meanwhile, the Torment used its speed to outflank the Apocalypse and engage the supporting Warhammer(A). After a few rounds of seemingly ineffactive pummelling, several things happened at once: the Thunderbolt(B), now missing its Right Arm, retreated to provide supporting fire, the Thunderbolt(A) left the central battle to engage the supporting Rifleman(B), the Apocalypse lost both its weapons (and crashed to theground with a destroyed Gyro), and the Drakkar's UAC/10 jammed. The Torment stripped away all the Warhammer(A)'s weapons shortly after, while the Thunderbolt(A) finished off the Thunderbolt(B) and killed the Rifleman(B) with head shots, leaving two lightly-damaged B 'Mechs against two functional A 'Mechs and two "living dead". With the outcome of the battle in doubt, theTorment took a turn to finish off both the Apocalypse and Warhammer(A), while a shot from the Trance Cobra touched off the MRM ammo in the Drakkar's Right Torso, leaving the Torment alone against two active enemies. However, the Torment's pilot made use of the 'Mech's excellent mobility, taking only minimal damage while picking away at its foes. Finally, a freakish hit destroyed the Thunderbolt(A)'s Gyro, and falling damage finished off the engine of an otherwise lightly-damaged machine. The Trance Cobra, now crippled by leg damage and down to only its Center Torso lasers, was able to put up only token resistance before the one-armed Torment ended the fight.

Apocalypse / Trance Cobra: 3
Torment / Drakkar: 4

*Wacky battle fact: After the Torment's final volley, all that was left of the Trance Cobra was its head!

8) (A) Experimental SRB / Above-Average vs Chien / Earnest (B)
A fantastically entertaining fight, provided you didn't drop your keys and miss the whole thing in the time it took to pick them up. The speedy competitors in this battle wasted no time starting the destruction, as the Earnest was badly cored in the Center Torso by massed PPC fire (courtesy of the Above-Average and the Warhammer(A)) in only the second round of the fight. With the Earnest apparently on the verge of collapse so early in the match, the odds seemed heavily in favour of Team A. However, unknown to most spectators, the Earnest's pilot was none other than Vernon "Headhunter" McQueeg. While Team A tried desterately to finish off the Earnest's shredded Center Torso, McQueeg's UAC/20 casually lopped off the head of the Warhammer(A), while the Warhammer(B) exploited the SRB's unarmored Right Torso (courtesy of the Earnest's BFG) with 4 SRM hits, setting of the AC/2 ammo. The Above-Average managed to land a killing PPC shot to the Earnest's torso, but not before "Headhunter" dealt out the same fate to the Above-Average as it had to the Warhammer. With three nearly-untouched 'Mechs against the Thunderbolt(A), Team B quickly ended the battle, barely a minute after it started.

SRB / Above-Average: 1
Chien / Earnest: 4

*Wacky Battle Fact: The Chien was the only B 'Mech to bypass the lake to the north, so by the time it entered the battle, all there was for it to do was help mop up the Thunderbolt(A)!

9) (A)MAD Marauder / Jack Hammer vs SRB / Above-Average (B)
Due to time restrictions, Trial 2 was cut short after only two rounds, so this ninth battle was fought to involve the two teams which had only fought once to this point.

This final Trial 2 battle began with the familiar pattern: everyone opening fire on the first Thunderbolt to come into range--in this case the Thunderbolt(A), which lost its Right Arm and spent the next 3 rounds unconscious. Chaos reigned in the center of the arena for awhile, but the dust settled to reveal the Jack Hammer minus its Center Torso (courtesy of the Above-Average) and the Warhammer(A) with a mildly radioactive lump of scrap where its engine had been (courtesy of the Rifleman(B)) The fallen Thunderbolt(A) chose that moment to rejoin the fight, and it immediately rushed the pesky Rifleman(B), while its counterpart closed with the Above-Average. The minumum ranges on the Above-Average's weapons, coupled with weak leg armor, left the fearsome test 'Mech helpless against the Thunderbolt(B) at close quarters, but an actuator hit robbed it of any hope of escape. The course of the battle became crystal clear when the MAD Marauder took off the Thunderbolt(A)'s head just as the Thunderbolt(B) disabled the Above-Average's engine. The SRB, unable to inflict serious damage with either Hatchets or Autocannons, was soon hunted down and crushed.

MAD Marauder / Jack Hammer: 4
SRB / Above-Average: 1

A sudden flurry of activity, and now Trial 3 is complete! The top four qualify for the Elimination matches. It's late, and I'm tired, so all I'll post is the order destroyed, and the 'Mechs which scored the killing shot.

A note about tie-breakers: if two 'Mechs died in a single round in this trial, the order is determined by the initiative order of the 'Mechs which fired the killing shots. If two or more 'Mechs tie for the fourth playoff spot, the winner will be determined by the number of points scored in Trial 3.

Trial 3 Results

Note: the 'Mech named in brackets scored the kill.

>>I look forward to reading the blow-by-blow, if you have the time...<<

I wish I had, but a 17-'Mech free-for-all is a lot of blows...especially at 2:00 AM. I kept only minimal notes, but if anyone wants to know specifics about a certain 'Mech, I'll fill in whatever details I can remember.

I'll start with this, though...I used 2 map boards, with the 'Mechs spread more-or-less evenly around the edge, random order. The battle started with nearly everyone picking on their neighbors...there was a lot of double-teaming, as everyone wanted to knock the first few 'Mechs out of the competition as soon as possible, in order to guarantee themselves a higher score. The top scoring 'Mechs were generally the ones that were ignored for the first few rounds, or, by virtue of the starting arrangement, had some degree of cover.

Interested in a "kill count"? This is only a record of the "killing blow", so it doesn't reflect which 'Mech did the bulk of the damage, but I like lists, so here goes

'Mech................# of kills
'Mechs killed (round eliminated)

Above-Average........3

The Final Four double-elimination competition got underway today at the 2nd JMInc. Invitational Design Challenge. Four matches set the stage for the tomorrow's climactic finals.

1) Hydra vs Urban Defender
The first match of the day was a replay of one of the many duels fought in the Trial 3 free-for-all, although the first meting between these two took place after the Urban Defender had ripped both arms off the APC-X Apocalypse, and with the Drakkar dumping additional firepower on the Hydra. The battle began rather uneventfully, with both 'Mechs inflicting scattered damage, but the action heated up rather suddenly when the Hydra closed to dish out physical damage. Although the Hydra inflicted heavy damage with its weapons, knocking out the Urban Defender's AC/5 and seriously damaging its Engine, the Urbie's return volley knocked the Hydra to the ground after damaging a leg actuator. The Hydra gamely regained its feet and set off the Urban Defender's CASE-protected AC/5 ammo, but it was again knocked to the ground after losing its LB 10-X AC. A kick to the prone Hydra damaged its Gyro, but, shockingly, the batterd 'Mech refused to stay down, at least not until it lost its Left Leg completely. Another kick from the nearly-ammoless Urban Defender ended the fight. An ugly victory, but city specialists are meant to get ugly, right?

2) Chien vs Above-Average
The Chien began this match by attempting to close range as quickly as possible, but was stopped in its tracks when its not-quite-Awesome opponent's first volley knocked it to the ground. The Chien's piloting mishaps continued as it fell again two rounds later, but not until it had succeeded in heat-crippling the Above-Average with its Inferno SRMs. Pinned against the edge of the arena, heat-crippled, and with heavy damage to its legs and Left Torso, the Above-Average looked to be in a tough spot, but its daring pilot gambled everything in an attempt to exploit the Chien's heavily-damaged Left Torso. Risking shutdown, the Above-Average cut loose with an Alpha Strike which tore out the Chien's Left Torso, disabling the XL Engine. A narrow victory for the Above-Average.

3) Above-Average vs Urban Defender
The Above-Average, with its dominating victory in the free-for-all and its impressive first-round win against the Chien, was the natural favorite in this match-up, but die-hard fans refused to discount the incomparable Vernon "Headhunter" McQueeg, even without a clear head-capper weapon. Outgunned at long range, McQueeg took full advantage of available cover to avoid the worst of the Above-Average's PPC fire. By the time McQueeg cleared the last of the cover and came into short range of the Urban Defender's Autocannons, both 'Mechs were lightly damaged, but seemed eager for action, and the battle looked about to really heat up. However, McQueeg was definitely in fine form today, emerging from the last stand of trees at a casual pace, shrugging off a short-range volley from his fearsome adversary, and then slamming a pair of AC/10 slugs directly into the face of ABV-8G, ending the fight in characteristically abrupt fashion.

Remind me to fire McQueeg as a tester and send him back to the front line where he belongs. It's very tough to get an accurate assessment of any 'Mech with that guy in the cockpit!

4) Hydra vs Chien
The final match of the day was an entertaining battle between two eerily similar 'Mechs. The Chien got off to an early advantage by scoring a hit with a single Inferno SRM, crippling the Hydra's heat for what turned out to be the duration of the battle, but repeated hits to the Head and Left Arm of the Chien finally turned the tide. In a single turn, the Chien's Left Arm, and the Ultra AC/5 it carried, was torn off, an LB cluster hit pierced the one-armed 'Mech's Center Torso armor, damaging the Engine, and another LB shot struck the head (third hit), knocking the Chien's pilot unconscious. The Hydra was knocked from its feet that same turn, due to leg actuator damage, which limited its ability to take advantage of its unconscious opponent, but the Chien still suffered significant unanswered damage the following turn. Although the Chien's pilot regained consciousness almost immediately, the damage was done: a shower of cluster munitions and SRMs tore through the Left Torso of the Chien, disabling the Engine.

In accordance with the "Double Elimination" structure of the Final Four competition, the following matches are scheduled for tomorrow. First, the Hydra and the Above-Average, each with a single loss, face off. The winner of that match must then defeat the Urban Defender twice before suffering a second loss in order to win the competition.

Hooray! Almost done!

First up was the qualifier between the HRA-4 Hydra and the ABV-8G Above-Average, followed by the final showdown with the as-yet-undefeated Urban Defender. Thankfully, "Headhunter" McQueeg was under house arrest and unable to attend the proceedings

Hydra vs Above-Average
Keeping in mind the Above-Average's close call against the Chien, as well as the 'Mech's embarassing close-range pummelling by a low-tech Thunderbolt during a Trial 2 match, the ABV-8G's veteran pilot opted to diverge from the pattern of simply camping and sniping. The strategy appeared to be paying off, as the relentlessly-pursuing Hydra suffered heavy damage while trying to corner its adversary. However, after a full lap-and-a-half of the Arena's central lake, the Above-Average was forced towards the edge of the Arena layout. Into short range and operating at walking pace, the battered Hydra was finally able to strike with its full arsenal and start inflicting significant damage. However, due to heavy leg damage, the Hydra's pilot was unwilling to close completely in order to exploit the Above-Average's below-average leg armor. Meanwhile, the Above-Average was beginning to have targeting difficulties due to its enemy's close proximity. The Hydra's high heat allowed the ABV-8G to open the range slightly and score with a full volley, nearly removing the Hydra's Left Leg, but two blistering volleys had compromised the Above-Average's Center Torso armor, allowing a shower of SRMs and LB Cluster shots to do their work, disabling the fearsome ABV-8G's Engine. A dramatic win for the underdog Hydra.

*Interesting battle fact: the Hydra actually suffered more damage than the Above-Average, but much of that damage was soaked up by its heavily-armored legs. The Above-Average took damage mainly to the torso, hence its rather sudden exit.

***Final Showdown...HRA-4 Hydra vs Urban Defender***
Note: Due to the Double-Elimination format, a 'Mech must suffer two losses in order to be eliminated, so at the start of the Showdown, the Hydra needed to defeat the Urban Defender twice, while one win would clinch the victory for the Urban Defender.

***Match 1***
The Hydra was out for revenge in this match, after its defeat at the hands of the Urban Defender in the first round of the elimination tournamend, and revenge it would get. After the Hydra's disastrous close-range encounter in the first round, the HRA-4's new pilot opted instead to fight a distant, running battle, hoping to take advantage of the Urban Defender's ammo dependency. The plan was working well, as the Urban Defender had accuracy problems, and seemed unable to hit with the both shots in Ultra mode. The slower Defender seemed to grasp a chance at victory when it seized the initiative, closed to short range, and badly cored the Hydra's Center Torso, damaging the Gyro, but a lucky shot from the Hydra's LB-X cannons pierced the Urban Defender's Center Torso armor and disabled the Gyro. The fallen 'Mech was still a threat, withe the heavy damage to the Hydra's Torso, but a blistering volley at point-blank range ripped of the Urban Defender's Left Arm and Left Torso, leaving it with only the UAC/10 in the arm it needed to prop itself to fire. Unable to return fire, the Urban Defender was sooon ripped to shreds.

Looks like after weeks of testing, it all comes down to a single battle. How's that for a grudge match?
Peace is that glorious moment in history when everyone stands around reloading.
