Final Trial 1Results and Highlights...part 2

14) HRA-4 Hydra
This battle began with a display of wretched marksmanship -- neither 'Mech seemed able to score a significant hit. Finally, after more than a minute of combat, the Hydra began inflicting some serious damage, knocking the Atlas to the ground. With the Atlas's Center Torso armor in tatters, the Hydra unleashed a stream of Alpha Strikes that threatened shutdown, but the third strike paid off, destroying the house 'Mech's Engine and Gyro, while the Hydra suffered only minor internal damage. After 110 seconds, the Hydra was triumphant.

Thanks to LordChaos for submitting the HRA-4 Hydra!

15) H-75 Jack Hammer
Once again, a UAC/20-mounting 'Mech dominated the Atlas, but an unusual twist kept the outcome of this battle in doubt. Both 'Mechs waded in immediately to duke it out at close range (the Jack Hammer seemed unable to hit with the LRMs). Upon entering AC range, the Jack Hammer slammed both slugs into the Atlas, but failed to penetrate the heavier 'Mech's impressive armor. The following volley dealt some ineffective internal damage to the Atlas's Left Leg and Center Torso, while answering fire inflicted heavy damage to the test 'Mech's legs and torso, and both 'Mechs toppled to the ground. The Atlas quickly rushed to physical attack range, suffering an engine and a Gyro hit in the process, and the 'Mechs traded kicks, each losing a leg. Falling damage ignited the AC ammo in the Jack Hammer's CASE-protected Right Torso, while the Atlas lost a Heat Sink. Due to facing, the Atlas was unable to bring its AC to bear, but the Jack Hammer had a clear shot, and a cluster Ac shot tothe head knocked the Atlas pilot unconscious. Repeated shots from the test 'Mech's LB 10-X and LRMs (at extreme close range) finally set off the Atlas's LRm ammo after 11 rounds of combat.

Thanks to Bob_Richter for submitting the H-75 Jack Hammer!

16) MAD Marauder
The modified Marauder made everyone sit up and take notice as it took the field, but most people were skeptical about how much damage the Autocannons could do against the Atlas. Sure enough, the Atlas managed to close to within range of its AC/20 before the Marauder could dish out significant damage. A lucky shot from the murderous heavy autocannon ripped through the armor on the Marauder's Left Torso, and the follow-up shot knocked the test 'Mech to the ground. Falling damage essentially decided the match, as the Marauder's Center Torso armor was pierced, damaging the engine and gyro. The Marauder's pilot refused to give up however, dishing out shot which pierced the Atlas's Center Torso armor, damaging the engine, but the Atlas pursued the batterd 'Mech relentlessly, destroying the test 'Mech's Center Torso after only 7 rounds.

Thanks to Cray for submitting the MAD Marauder!

17) SND-BL5R Sand Blaster
The bizarre, Annihilator-ish Sand Blaster suffered from poor marksmanship as the Atlas continued its vengeful rampage on this final day of the first trial. The test 'Mech was unable to inflict more than token damage to the charging Atlas before the house 'Mech reached close range, and buy that point it was too late for the pitifully slow Sand Blaster to escape. Although the test 'Mech managed to rally and dish out an impressive amount of damage, the Atlas's armor absorbed it. Meanwhile, the Sand Blaster was unable to avoid or withstand the Atlas's AC/20 and devastating physical attacks. A gyro hit on the Atlas knocked the rampaging Assault 'Mech to the ground, but a shot to the Sand Blaster's Center Torso ignited the remaining AC/2 ammo, ending the fight after 9 rounds.

Thanks to Zippy for submitting the SND-BL5R Sand Blaster!

18) Urban Defender
The final test 'Mech to face the Atlas appeared a little out of place away from its intended urban environment, but even in an open field, the Urban Defender gave an impressive performance. The test 'Mech waited patiently while the Atlas rushed to close the range, so by the time the Atlas reached physical attack range, its armor had been greatly weakened. A kick from the Atlas damaged the internal structure of the Urban Defender's Left Leg, prompting the test 'Mech to back off a little, but the lighter 'Mechs soon got its revenge, ripping into the Atlas with a barrage that silinced the AC/20, damaged the engine, and destroyed the gyro, paralyzing the fearsome Assault 'Mech. After that, it was a matter of simple butchery, as the Atlas's other weapons were too light to seriously threaten the test 'Mech. The Atlas finally collapsed completely after 11 rounds.

Thanks to Cray for submitting the Urban Defender!

Somehow I expect the Gauss Triple to collect more than it`s
share of long range fire in the second trial....

Very interesting though, you see the difference between XL

Trial 2 is now under way. This is a five-round Round Robin competition; results and highlights will be posted after each round.

***Trial 2 details***

I have divided the test 'Mechs into 9 pairs, which will fight with the aid of a pair of level 1 heavy 'Mechs. The support 'Mechs are chosen by weight such that each team will consist of one 'Mech at each of 60, 65, 70, and 75 tons. However, due to the abundance of 75-ton entries, there are three teams with two 75-tonners. These teams will be supported by a 60 and a 65-tonner. The available support 'Mechs are Rifleman, Thunderbolt, Warhammer, and Marauder.

A word about the teams: where possible, I paired 'Mechs of different weights, so each team has at least 1 75-tonner. Furthermore, no team has two 'Mechs with the same designer. I tried to balance the teams as much as possible, pairing 'Mechs that should work reasonably well together. Also, to avoid possible complaints about an unfair pairing, the GST-1T Gauss Triplet is paired with JMInc.'s exhibition 'Mech, the 65-ton Ichabod, so only Bob can complain about an unfair pairing (No offence to the GST-1T, but it is a heavy underdog...)

***Scoring***

Since it is very difficult to isolate a 'Mech's contribution to a battle, each 'Mech will receive 1 point for each 'Mech destroyed by its team. Thus the winning team will score 4, and the losing team will score from 0 to 3 points, or even 4 in the unlikely event of a double-death. Since each team will fight in 4 battles (with one bye), each will score between 0 and 16 points in this trial. for rounds 2-5, battle matchups will be chosen according to score, i.e. teams with the same or close score will face each other.

***The Teams***

1) Drakkar / Torment
2) Challenger / Hydra
3) Chien / Earnest
4) AmmoMan / Urban Defender
5) Antedater / Sand Blaster
6) Trance Cobra / Apocalypse
7) Gauss Triplet / Ichabod(EX)
8) Jack Hammer / MAD Marauder
9) SRB / Above-Average

***Battle Highlights***

*Note: each team is labelled (A) or (B) for easy reference. For example, Rifleman(A) refers to the Rifleman supporting the 'Mechs listed as team (A).

1) (A) Drakkar / Torment vs Challenger/ Hydra (B)
A dramatic back-and-forth match. Both pairs of test 'Mechs were supported by a Thunderbolt and Rifleman, making the test 'Mechs truly the deciding factor. Both Riflemen immediately ran for cover, the Rifleman A sitting in shallow water, and the Rifleman B hiding in light woods. The Torment faced off against the opposing Rifleman and Thunderbolt, leaving the other three 'Mechs to deal with the two opposing test 'Mechs. Team A came on strong to start -- the Torment mauled the Rifleman B with 9 medium lasers, while the Drakkar and Thunderbolt A unloaded on the Challenger, piercing the CT armor and destroying the gyro. The fallen Challenger was fired from the ground, setting off the UAC/10 ammo in the Drakkar's LT, scoring the first kill. The Torment hit the Rifleman B with only 2 of 7 medium lasers, but both hit the head, killing the Rifleman. The Thunderbolt A, rushing to aid the Torment (and avoid the Hydra) was stopped by a head shot which knocked the pilot unconscious. The Drakkar ripped it apart before the pilot could regain consciousness. A fluke shot from the Thunderbolt B's large laser to the Torment's head (already hit by the Rifleman) finished off the Torment. The Rifleman A made a gallant attempt to finish off the fallen Challenger for an extra point, but it was torn apart before it could do so.

Drakkar / Torment: 1
Challenger / Hydra: 4

2) (A) Chien / Earnest vs AmmoMan / Urban Defender (B)
This matched looked like it was over almost before it began, but appearances can often be deceiving. Early in the match, team B concentrated their fire on the Earnest and knocked out the massive UAC/20, but the Earnest's speed kept it a threat as it hounded the Rifleman(B) for the rest of the match. The Chien was not to be underestimated either, as it held the center if the arena (with the assistance of the Thunderbolt and supporting fire from the Warhammer) long enough to kill the Urban Defender in a merciless group pounding. At the same time that the abused Urban Defender finally collapsed, the Thunderbolt(A) (the 'Mech that wouldn't DIE!!!!!!) took a hit from the AmmoMan which set off the LRM ammo. The Thunderbolt(B) (crippled by multiple inferno missiles) and the AmmoMan ganged up on the Chien, and the Rifleman(B) delivered the killing blow with a vicious Alpha Strike. Unfortunately for the Rifleman, its heat shot up to 25, and the 'Mech vanished in a burst of AC/5 ammo. The remaining B 'Mechs made short work of what was left of the battered Earnest, and then engaged the still-pristine Warhammer at long range, after the Thunderbolt took a turn to wash off the inferno goo. The Thunderbolt pilot was apparently annoyed at having been heat-crippled the entire battle, and took out his frustration on the unfortunate Warhammer, with light supporting fire from the AmmoMan (down to only its LRMs, and runnung low on ammo). (A word to the unwary...don't p!$$ off a Thunderbolt -- you'll pay for it!) The Warhammer didn't last long before getting scrapped by the vengeful T-bolt.

Chien / Earnest: 2
AmmoMan / Urban Defender: 4

3) (A) Antedater / Sand Blaster vs Trance Cobra / Apocalypse (B)
This was a long, brutal battle, with most of the 'Mechs sustaining a horrific amount of damage before falling. Team B seemed to be maintaining a slight advantage, but a dramatic kill by the Sand Blaster turned the tables, securing a solid victory for team A. The battle began with both supporting Thunderbolts rushing to mid-field, soaking up an unbelievable amount of punishment before going down. The Thunderbolt(A) was killed by a barrage from the Trance Cobra, while the Thunderbolt(B) was put down by a blast from the Sand Blaster after taking combined fire from three 'Mechs for 5 rounds. The Apocalypse, mangled early on by the Thunderbolt(A) was "disarmed" by the Antedater, but remained active. Team B appeared to be on top, but the Sand Blaster finally reached the center of the field and unleashed a barrage of LB slugs at the Warhammer(B). Three of the four slugs took the undamaged Warhammer in the Center Torso, disabling the engine. The Apocalypse was soon put down by a kick from the Antedater (by now down to just its lasers). The Trance Cobra made a valiant attempt to knock the aggravating Rifleman(A) out of the battle, but the Sand Blaster, using the last of its LB ammo, shredded it with a burst of cluster ammo. This battle was dafinitely closer and more destructive than the score shows.

Antedater / Sand Blaster: 4
Trance Cobra / Apocalypse: 1

*Interesting battle fact: At the end of the battle, the three surviving 'Mechs had a combined total of 6 active weapons, with a total damage potential of 30.

4) (A) Gauss Triplet / Ichabod vs Jack Hammer / MAD Marauder (B)
A little bit of luck, some fancy footwork, amd a pair of unkillable Riflemen (of all things!) made this a battle to behold as the wacky Gauss Triplet (crowd favourite and current points leader) and the JMInc. host entry scored a rather embarrassing victory over the astonished Jack Hammer and Marauder refit. The field quickly split into two battles, with the Ichabod tackling the Marauder and Rifleman(B), and the Warhammer(A) and Rifleman(A) attempting to lure the Jack Hammer and Thunderbolt(B) into the Gauss Triplet's "kill zone". Unable to approach the partially-concealed Gauss Triplet without eating its full firepower anyway, and unable to match their opponents' long-range firepower, the Jack Hammer and Thunderbolt chose to grit their teeth and charge. The Thunderbolt moved in first, hoping to drain the Gauss Triplet's ammunition, but the GST-1T's pilot held his fire, waiting for a prime shot. Once the Thunderbolt's armor was weakened, the Gauss Triplet cut loose, ripping into the Thunderbolt's Left Arm and igniting the Machine Gun ammo stored there. With the Ichabod keeping both the Marauder and the Rifleman(B) busy, the Jack Hammer was left alone against three enemy 'Mechs, and it immediately showed its worth by dropping the Warhammer with gyro hits, absorbing the GST-1T's remaining Gauss slugs, and turning to unleash a beating on the Rifleman(A), only to have its Right Arm (and the UAC/20 mounted there) lopped off by an AC/5 slug. The Jack Hammer held on, trying desperately to take out the Rifleman(A), which just refused to die. Meanwhile, the Ichabod was rushing madly about to fend off its two adversaries, soaking up a lot of punishment but badly injuring the Marauder and finally managing to lop off both of the Rifleman(B)'s legs. Just after the Rifleman(B) crashed to the ground, the Jack Hammer's Gauss-mangled Center Torso was struck by the Rifleman(A)'s Large Laser and Autocannon, delivering fatal engine damage. With the Gauss Triplet and Rifleman(A) now free to contribute their remaining firepower, team A managed to drop the Marauder fairly quickly, but it took four more volleys for thethree 'Mechs to finally kill the prone Rifleman(B), which in the meantime managed to inflict a pair of crushing engine hits which almost took out the Ichabod. With the Warhammer down, but still operational, team A scored a decisive victory point-wise, although for the entire battle they were a hair away from being crushed just as decisively.

Gauss Triplet / Ichabod: 4
Jack Hammer / Marauder: 0

*Wacky battle fact: Although the Ichabod took crushing damage to nearly every location, it didn't suffer a single hit to the Center Torso, front or rear!

Ack! That's a lot of work! And to think I did this to myself....oh well *sigh*

yeah...with the number of LB-Xs in this contest, there are quite a few torso crits. So far, I don't think any 'Mech has suffered faal damage until the armor was gone, but several have been aggravated by Engine and Gyro hits.

What really surprised me in the first round is how effective a Rifleman can be when allowed to stick to a support role..they fall apart when forced to fight front-line, but from the back rank they can dish out a lot of damage!

Sorry for the looooong delay, folks. I should be able to post results on a more regular basis until the challenge is complete. Anyway, here are a couple more battle results from Trial 2, just to show I haven't forgotten

5) (A) Challenger / Hydra vs AmmoMan / Urban Defender (B)
Team B came out strong in this match, nearly taking the Thunderbolt(A) out of the action early. However, the tide quickly turned when a single round saw the Thunderbolt(B)'s pilot knocked unconscious by repeated head hits from the Hydra, while in the same round the Urban Defender's LA-mounted UAC/10 was destroyed and the RA-mounted UAC/10 jammed, as did the AmmoMan's UAC/5. With Team B down to only 2 effective 'Mechs, the rest of the battle was simply a slaughter. The remaining B 'Mechs tried desperately to finish off the badly damaged Thunderbolt(A) and Rifleman(A), but they were cut down by the rampaging Challenger before they could score a kill. The Thunderbolt(B) was destroyed without the pilot ever regaining consciousness.

Challenger / Hydra: 4
AmmoMan / Urban Defender: 0

6) (A) Gauss Triplet / Ichabod vs Antedater / Sand Blaster (B)
This was a truly ugly fight, but nevertheless a crowd-pleaser. The GST-1T Gauss Triplet once again spent the whole battle behind partial cover, waiting for enemy 'Mechs to enter the "kill zone", while the Sand Blaster spent the whole battle trying to get close enough to do something. As usual, it was a Thunderbolt that took the brunt of the first full volley as the Gauss Triplet opened up on the Thunderbolt(B), and all 3 Gauss slugs slammed home in the 'Mech's Center Torso. The Thunderbolt(B) went down the following round as the Rifleman(A) and the GST-1T's autocannons exploited the gaping holes created by the previous volley. In the meantime, the Ichabod was mangled by a shower of cluster munitions from the Sand Blaster, losing a Large Laser and taking Engine and Gyro damage. Combined fire from the Ichabod and Rifleman(A) destroyed the Gyro and did severe engine damage to the Rifleman(B), disabling it, but leaving it technically functional, and the Gauss Triplet continued to be a devastating crit-seeker with its LB-Xs, damaging the Antedater's engine. The Ichabod managed to score an engine hit on the Sand Blaster, but the answering volley ripped the JMInc. exhibition 'Mech to shreds. When the Warhammer(A) and Rifleman(A) finished off the Antedater, it looked like the battle was essentially over, but once again, the Sand Blaster proved to be the Great Equalizer, shredding the Warhammer(A) with a single volley. The Rifleman(A) finally managed to eliminate its counterpart, but then the Sand Blaster (which had finally regained its feet after some hapless flailing, courtesy of a Gyro hit) casually racked up its third kill of the day with an LB 10-X slug to the head of the as-yet untouched Rifleman(A). This left an ammo-poor, heat-crippled, heavily damaged Sand Blaster facing the partially-concealed, unarmored, ammo-poor Gauss Triplet. The Sand Blaster, finding itself on the losing end in a light-AC duel, attempted to close (very slowly) in order to use its LB 10-Xs effectively, but the second it neared the "kill zone", the GST-1T emerged from its cover for the first time and cored the Sand Blaster's torso with its last two Gauss slugs. The Sand Blaster's volley stripped of the Gauss Triplet's minimal armor coverage, but failed to score a crippling hit, and the GST-1T's LBs finished off its enemy's Center Torso.

Gauss Triplet / Ichabod: 4
Antedater / Sand Blaster: 3
