[b***]Bribery, Skulduggery at 2nd JMInc. Invitational Design Challenge***

It's a sad, sad, sad fact: whenever valuable prizes or great prestige are at stake, corruption will inevitably follow.

It seems the make's of the Urban Defender, after a crushing defeat by the Hydra, had some doubts about their 'Mech's ability to get rid of the 'Mech that

just.
won't
DIE!!!!

Wishing to give their 'Mech the best possible chance of victory (and unable to contact the designated Hydra pilot in order to place a bribe), representatives of the UD's manufacturing company approached the one man with unblemished success in the 'Mech's cockpit: Vernon "Headhunter" McQueeg. McQueeg refused at first on the grounds that he was under strict house arrest, but when the corporate rep doubled his initial offer on the spot, the former Covert Ops agent agreed to "see what he could do." In a perfect example of "trickle-down" corruption, McQueeg passed a portion of his fee on down to the guards monitoring his residence, and slipped away without raising an alarm. Putting his Covert Ops experience to good use, McQueeg infiltrated the arena, swiftly dispatched the designated pilot, and settled into the Urban Defender's cockpit (but not before starting a rumor that a certain odds-defying 'Mechwarrior had escaped, and was going to be piloting the Hydra, then betting what remained of his advance on the Urban Defender at 187:1). McQueeg disappeared immediately after the battle, and his current whereabouts are unknown.

***Match 2***
The Hydra began this battle as it had the last, keeping in motion and at medium range or better of the Urban Defender's Autocannons. Once again, the strategy was working well, as the Urban Defender's armor was peeled away bit by bit, while most of the return fire amounted to little more than wasted ammo. However, eventually, the Urban Defender's pilot (you-know-who ) gained a strong position in the center of the arena, making it very difficult for the Hydra to keep out of short range and also maintain top speed. Seeing a chance, McQueeg rushed the badly-positioned Hydra and opened fire, scoring a single direct hit to the Hydra's head, knocking out the Life Support and the head-mounted SRM. The Hydra's volley staggered the slower 'Mech, throwing off McQueeg's aim with the other slugs, but the legendary 'Mechwarrior quickly mastered the off-balance 'Mech, finishing off the job with a single AC/5 slug from his next volley.

The ending of the final match left no doubt as to who was really piloting the Urban Defender, setting off a minor riot in the Arena and surrounding community. In an effort to get the full story about events leading to the scandalous end to the competition, the local governor shut down all Dropship departures, detained all on-planet reps from all the participating design/manufacturing companies, and put out an APB on one Vernon McQueeg. A full report is still pending.

Well, folks, that wraps it up, except for the legal hassle..that could take years to sort out. Until the issue is settled, JMInc. most likely won't be running additional design challenges. But since the company loves the publicity generated by these contests, rest assured that Johnson 'MechWorks, Inc. will be running more competitions as soon as they are able.

When interviewed after the final match, the chief engineer of Project Hydra was quoted as saying "I'll kill that bastard myself. Twice."

is it too late to demand a rematch, this time putting that sneak in MY mech?

Unfortunately, the entire planet is currently under martial law, the test 'Mechs have been impounded for garrison duty, half the Arena was destroyed in the riots, and McQueeg has vanished from sight. Not to mention JMInc.'s reputation is in tatters. It doesn't seem likely that a rematch will be possible any time soon.

I`m seeing a possible future as a mercenary commander for Vernon McQueeg. Vernon`s Head Hunters? McQueeg`s Decapitators? The McQueeg Experience?

Hmmm...now that you mention it, that's very good idea. Lots of role-playing potential...I've already given him a freaky special skill, specific combat experience (Covert Ops), and a reason to go mercenary. Wow.

I'd have to limit his "Headhunting" ability, however...restrict it to desperate battle situations and Arena combat against a hopelessly superior opponent

Hey, don't knock the wacky designs. Keep in mind that 16 of these 18 'Mechs took out an Atlas in single combat. And everyone in the city they're patrolling knows it, too

I'm sure they'll get a healthy degree of respect.

BTW, does he by chance have any of the Advantages from MaxTech? Like, Marksman or Weapon Specialist or whatever they were called?

I'd probably want to give him something like that...I don't have any ofthe Mechwarrior sets, so I'm not familiar with the character creation rules. At the moment, McQueegis basically just a personality profile (and a scary natural ability!)

TRYCORP sat down in his recliner in front of the halotable ready to watch his favorite show. He reached for the remote only to see that the design representatives from the design challenge where being detained. He laughed to himself now thankful that his design had lost. But once he saw the designer of the mech that came in under him he got a little worried....

>BOOOM<!
TRYCORP:
Marines Sgt.: FREEZE!
TRYCORP: What tha..!
Marines Sgt.: YOU ARE UNDER ARREST!
TRYCORP: For what!?!
Marines Sgt.: All Reps are being detained!
*TRYCORP makes a break for the exit.*
*Marine squad chases after*
*TRYCORP Jumps through window of his villa out onto the lawn and heads for his driveway*
*Marines give chase*
*TRYCORP runs around the corner of his house just a few dozen feet from his hovercar*

TRYCORP: AAAAAAAAAHH!!!
*Hunchback stands facing the corner TRYCORP emerged from and points its huge LBX Cannon right at him*
TRYCORP: ooooh crap...
*TRYCORP gets Idea*
*Runs back around corner and jumps into corner window of his bedroom *
*Grabs needler*
*Runs toward back entrance to garage*
*Opens door and shoots guard watching his vehicle*
TRYCORP: I know that think is somewhere!
*Digs in corner of garage and pulls out satchel charge*
*Exits front door of garage and sneaks to back of Hunchback.*
*Climbs leg and puts charge in the knee joint*
TRYCORP: >=P TAKE THIS!!!
*Knee seperates from Hunchback and TRYCORP opens garage door and speeds away in Hovercar*
TRYCORP: HAHAHAHA!!! GOTCHA SUCKERS!!!
*Corsair streaks from air*
*OH!!! SH..
*Hover car seperates into dozens of pieces along with TRYCORP*

Question. Whats the point of a design challenge with junk for weapons? What idiot would want ACs in there mech? There heavy and almost worthless! The only thing worse that ACs are SRM.
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.

Two reasons: Because of the unusualness, and the fact that not everyone feels the same way as you. (from what I've gathered)

For the challenge, of course The whole point is to design the most effective 'Mech you can within the restrictions of the design criteria (and keeping in mind the trials to maximize potential).
