That is incorrect, the Sherman like German tanks used regular gasoline, but it was discovered that the ammo was to blame. Almost anywhere you hit a Sherman was bound to hit the ammo supply. Fixes were made, including welding extra armour plates over the vulnerable areas and adding special water tanks that would put out fires if the Sherman was hit. As a result the risk of fire was reduced to 10%.
