A friend of mine is going about putting together a system that uses cash to decide what you have instead of bv or tonnage. This is going to be used in a campaigne that happens on a small politaically unimportant rock ball that is in the middle of a civil war. It being situated at the very edge of the innersphere mechs will be rarer and will want to be used for more than one battle. Whats expected in play is 1. More use of non mech units 2. Mechs are going to be even more of the gods of the battlefield and rarier than usual 3. Less of those annoying gaint assult cheap munchkin mechs until maybe nearer to the end of the campaigne if at all. Plus a lessening of the ability of our cheapo local clan only player.

C-Bills can still be abused by the canny player.

Also, Mechs still have FAR better rules than vehicles. A lot of the time I destroy Vehicles through simple Hit Locations rather than massive damage.

Limit Vehicles to specialist roles. Savannah Masters for recon, harassing, and sucking down poor Initiative rolls. LRM Carriers for indirect fire and Thunder deployment. APCS. Alacorns and Shreck PPC Carriers to frighten your opponent away. Marksman, Sniper, Thumper, and Demolishers for Artillery.

If you can afford to get exotic, maybe Regulator Hover Tanks and Yellowjacket choppers for highly mobile Gauss batteries.

If you want the best bang for your buck, buy 3025 tech. Avoid XL engines. Upgrade your 'Mechs using the BMR rules later. Most of the time, you don't have to fiddle with much to make scary machines.

Frex, let's say you have an old-model Locust 1E. Strip the lasers, on-sell them. Install 2 ER Medium Lasers and 2 ER Smalls. Or just 3 ER Mediums. Whatever. Replace the Armour with Ferro Fibrous. Overhaul the Heat SInks for Doubles.

Now you've got a 20-tonner with max armour that moves at 8/12, has a Standard engine, and hits from 12 hexes.

And it costs you bugger all to do it.

One of my personal favourites: take an old Archer ARC-2R, replace its engine with an XL model (since it is an artillery 'Mech, and will hopefully not be engaged in direct combat), upgrade to double sinks, replace the medium lasers with ER and pulse (rear) models, and add CASE. The balance in wieght is made up in heatsinks. In the end, it renders a quite useful design with much-improved short-range defensive capabilites. Technology permitting, the LRM20's can even be given Artemis, at the expensvie of the rear pulse lasers reverting to standard ER models.

Expensive, but effective for what I need.

If the unit is 'hopefully' not going to engage in direct combat you may as well field vehicles. More LRM capability for your tonnage/buck.

Indeed.

Personaly, I'd downgrade to dual LRM-15s, Artemis them, and go to ER Mediums. Uprgade to DHS, CASE up the ammo, and you're ready to roll.

True about the artillery: vehicles would be better. Oh well, but that is what why we have 'Mechs...
