Newbies do not buy mechs until you are part of a faction. reason the AI that runs the m echs when they are not piloted is very basic to say the least. You will probably lose the mech if you fight against piloted attack forces.

Or if you do buy one, hide it in a zone until it is needed.
-------------------- The question is not how far, the question is do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as needed?

I agree, you should NEVER place a mech in a city or in a zone near a city.
However a good jump medium mech is worth its weight in gold for a low level empire. 'specially now jump infantry is gone.
I find the Phoenix Hawk PXH-1D 45 ton medium mech is a good all-rounder in the scouting role. They are a market mech, generally round the $135 million mark and with a skill 2/2 pilot, 1322 BV. If they get to a piloting skill of 0 then they are great for hotdropping in zones. Must admit I am waiting for the HALO mods.
I don't use light mechs anymore, my lights are actually medium mechs. If you go scouting into a defended zone and there is heavy defense, you have a pretty good chance of retreating out and saving the mech and pilot.

i favor fireflies, jenners and the panther. for low lvls panthers are not a scout mech. but a a p-hawk can fill both roles also.

in low levels a WVE-6N is great.
its only 45ton so uses minimal SP, has jump capabilities, good armor and a good all round range of fire power.

Buying a light mech is certainly the affordable option for beginning empires. However, please remember to check their stats closely, they will always be very low in armor. However, actual armor is not their true defense, their speed is. Keep your new mech laser scar free by keeping it constantly in motion at your highest speeds.

i love that mech.
alas, those take a long time to save for in a level 1 or 2. my best bet in small empires. a jenner. the f or the d. it's fast, its got jump jets, its got lasers(and if you do with the d, some srm's) and the best part is, at 35 tons, you don;t eat alot of sp, hell, a 0 pop level 1 still has 2.5 sp to play with. thats a coupla hunters if i'm not mistaken.

ya, Jenner-F is an awesome little mech, and at lower levels mechs are a great asset, just be careful with their storage.
