You know, folks...

...there are a number of possibilities we're overlooking as to why BT autocannons might work the way they do. It might be the case (as suggested by Michael A. Stackpole's descriptions in the Warrior Trilogy) that the /# with an autocannon describes its rate of fire. An AC/2 fires 2 shots to the pull of the trigger, the AC/5 5 shots, and so on. This would indicate (to me at least) that all of the varieties of caliber they come in have equivalent power, and that the shortened ranges indicates a shorter barrel length (to provide for more barrels, or whatever), which would explain the relative lightness of the heavier autocannons.

It would also explain the almost-exact ratio of the ammo weights.

Just something to think about. I'm hardly an expert, after all.

I considered "that the /# with an autocannon describes its rate of fire", but that lasted until reading the fluff in Technical Readouts and BMR. Autocannons range from 30-90mm and more. The Demolisher's Chemjet AC/20s are definitely 185mm; I can't think of any 185mm AC/2s.

I suppose it's a question of which fluff you want to believe. Personally, I like to think "bigger AC, bigger bore diameter." An AC/20 that's 30mm like an AC/2 is just so...so...unsatisfying. :)

>It would also explain the almost-exact ratio of the ammo weights

It would, though you get the same effect by varying caliber and, within an AC class, rates of fire.

AC/20s are listed in a variety of calibers...120, 185, 203, what-have-you. The Hetzer's 120mm gun even seems to be a single-shot model...!

Of course, for any number of AC/20s and AC/2 the caliber is unlisted.

The Hetzer fires "10 hyper-velocity 150mm slugs"

The Demolisher's AC/20s are "185mm Chemjets," IIRC.

The Mechbuster has something impressive. IIRC, it only fires 5 slugs.
