arena gambling & spectating
      #31473 - 07/01/02 05:35 PM (67.32.64.146)

this was brought up a few months ago, but got shot down because bakc then battle weren't running so smoothly. But I heard that Randy did some tweaking and they're runnign smoother now, so I'll bring it up again, with some additions.

Sometimes, when I see my allies deulling, I wish I could cheer them on. Also one of my allies is a big mech dueller, and I'm jsut about to start mech duelling. I think it would be cool if people could watch arena duels play out.

Randy could say that the NGC was rserving seats for the planet's emperors or something.

Limits on the numbe rof spectators would be good too. I would suggest something like:

1 for infantry vs infantry
2 for infantry vs vehicle(s)/mech(s)
4 for vehicle(s) vs vehicle(s)
5 for a mech vs a mech
6 for mixed forces (with at least one mech) vs mixed vorces (with at least one mech)
8 for mech v mechs

well, you get the point.

It would also be cool if you could bet. You wouldn't need to restrict the number of people that could bet on one duel, since it probably wouldn't bog the fight down too much.

The people duelling would be notified if someone betted on the match. (who betted, how much, and for whom).

If the person you bet on wins, then you earn what you bet, Example: I bet 2 million on a duel and my bet wins. Then i get 4 million nev$, so a net gain of 2 mil.

If the person you bet on loses, then the winner of the duel gets what you bet. Example: I bet 2 millin on a duel and lose. The winner of the duel takes home my 2 million as extra pirze money.

That might be fun...

Of course, you would only be able to place bets in the first 4-5 turns of a duel or something like that. Maybe there could be some sort of indicator for which duels you can still bet on on the arena screen.

yeah, but y not through in odds based on the units rep and that empires win record. also base the odds on the units. like say if a locust beats an atlus, after the cheating investigations are over, a one million dollar bet should give you something like 50 mil.

The programming for that would be too detailed for an Internet game. There would be too many variables for a 'Mech fight for it to be based on odds: pilot skill, personal history of the 'Mech, upgrades, previous damage, etc. That just couldn't be supported on an Internet game. If Neveron got shifted to a LAN-based multiplayer, then the connections would be wider and the data would flow easier, resulting in more space for more complex programming code, which would allow gambling on odds.

Besides, with a good enough Locust with a really good pilot (me) facing a bad pilot in that Atlas, the odds definately wouldn't be 50:1 against.

They'd be 50:1 for!

yea. The BV system is what's trying to keep odds fairly even.

I think the single largest problem with betting would be the ability to cheat. Just as easy as it is to fix a fight in RL, you could probably just as easily do it on nev. Two empires fight in cohesion, another bets, then wins because they pay off the other two empires.

There could be some ways to prevent this though:

1. Maximum bet could be based on the value of the cheapest (to replace) opponent. Thus it wouldn't be worth it for them to fight if they can't get back their unit+more.
2. Disallow those who bet on empires from sending those same empires money for 1 RL month (no payoffs).
3. Disallow betting on an empire you sent money in the past 1 RL month (no pre-payoffs).
4. What else???

I have thought that this would be cool to add in the past -- I wonder how hard it would be to implement?

Anyhoo...

an ezer way to base it would be on just mech tonnage class and pilot skills. that would make it a lot ezer to figure out the odds.

p.s. in that locust vs atlas fight, who would even bet on the locust?

there is a rule against fizing arena fights so one person wins. That can result in deletion and/or huge fines (like at least 50 mil) Read the record of cheater activity.

The cheating empires are usually a bunch of small empires intenetionally losing for the benenfit of a bigger empire. What usually happens is the smalle empiers are deleted(since they are usually created by the same guy that runs the bigger empire). Then the big empire is fined ALOT of money. LIke 50 million nev$ fine on a level 5 empire.

Only if the Locust pilot was good and the Atlas pilot was, say, Sun-Tzu Liao.

I've seen a Locust take down a Marauder. All in the skill and tactics of the Pilot. That and a hockeysock full of horseshoes
