I only chat for a few days before a war, or to coordinate things. Else, most of the time I just check in and grow buildings, train or market.

Staker, there are several ways to get onto chat - the easiest are proxy or http tunneling software - you can usually get free versions - they have limited bandwidth, but you're using it for irc, who cares? I use Your Freedom (www.your-freedom.net).
Jaden said something about high port settings or something... I'll have to ask Tigre about it.

Though it should be noted that using such software to get around your universities restrictions, if you are caught, may result in getting kicked off your course or a permanent computer use ban.

Indeed , I have downloaded plenty of illegal material, but on my home computer.
On my work computer, the one that gets me a job to pay for the home computer, and indeed pays for the home the computer is in, I play nice with all the cool restrictions and don't push my luck.
