Chat: General Q & A - Wayward Son
#74118 - 10/10/03 01:49 AM (220.127.116.11)
Here is the Chat Logs so far, done in Q/A format. This first one is of the most recent (third) session. (Thanks Silpheed!)
Italics represent stuff I put in, either by me or other people in the chat who are not Wayward.
Bold are questions.
Normal text is Wayward's direct or paraphrased response to questions, for the most part.
1.1 – What do you need to do to gain levels?
You need your population plus your Battlevalue to equal a certain value. This is 1,000 for level 1, 2,000 for level 2, 5,000 for level 3, 10,000 for level 4, and so on. To increase your population, build residentials. To increase your Battlevalue (BV), equip and train military units.
1.2 – What’s the best way to increase your empire size?
Landwar! I landwar all the time at low levels! Just recently I moved from level zero to level 3 within hours by capturing large, undefended cities. Landwar is by far the best thing to do at low level. See this post for Landwar tips! Remember, if you don’t want to risk your current empire in landwar, you can always start new empires and use them, up to a limit of 5 empires.
1.3 – What are better to build? Commercials, factories, or Researches?
You generally only want to build Commercials at a low level. Factories are useless until you get much higher in level, and you only want a few Researches so you can get bare bones techs like Stealth Towers. To summarize- Commercials!
1.4 – Are infantry actually any good?
For the most part, no. They are very specialized… good for certain things but not others. Infantry will be getting an overhaul most likely this fall. I doubt they will get PPCs or LRMs, but they will get cool stuff. They will get armor, yes. They can be useful in low level arenas – getting used to dueling. Additionally, they can be very useful in Landwar in certain defensive circumstances and when using “Automatic Battle Resolution”, either in a big fight or against “stealth towers”.
1.5 – What’s the deal with the English Major?
We’ve settled the issue, but thanks for the offer! Lips sealed, no info, zilch, nada!
1.6 – Who should come to these newbie chats?
NOT VETS! Newbies only in the newbie Q & A sessions, please. : )
1.7 – What is the deal with the legendary “Gauss Urbies? They don’t seem to exist!
When Genyosha Prime became the first empire to research a Mech (The UrbanMech-GP), they were allowed to produce 10 “Gauss Urbies” as a sort of prize. These were given to 10 different empires at random. These gauss urbies are manually altered versions of the normal urby; as such, they will not show up as a mech type.
1.8 – What are mark II weapons?
Mark II weapons generally have decreased weight or increased damage, or some other benefit. They cost a lot more though, both to research and produce. The SRM mk IIs do 3 points per SRM, but cause more heat. The LRM mk IIs have a minimum range of only 3. The AC/5 Mk IIs have 1 ton less weight.
1.9 – Are player owned dropships coming?
They are not on the list, no. Mwah ha ha ha! Dreams crushed, visions ruined! Take that, Neveron! Er…I think I forgot my medication.
1.10 – What’s the deal with Inferno Rounds and Land Mines?
These are not planned soon. Currently, they are just research pre-requisites.
1.11 – How much money do you make off Neveron?
As a private company, we aren’t going to disclose information on that. However, we spent many years deep in debt, and only now are becoming profitable.
1.12 – Any chance of there being a log available for this?
Funny you should mention that. <img src="/w3timages/icons/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Generally, if I can get someone to send me a log, I will post them here. Speaking of that... if anyone has a log of the FIRST newbie chat, please send it to me!
1.13 – Is there any way of upgrading structures to higher CF?
No, besides knocking the current ones down. Generally you should just build new buildings elsewhere. There’s no point in knocking them down, by the way. Just build new ones.
1.14 – I opened the forums page and it opened in the chat window. &!*$!
It’s always been that way, sorry… they have the same “target”. However, you can right click on the link and select “Open in new Window”, and you should be fine.
1.15 – Does population cross zones?
Yes. Population on Neveron commutes around in an unlimited fashion, as much as it needs to.
1.16 – When will “x” feature be finished?
<Denikin> how soon?

Re: Chat Log- New Format
#74120 - 10/10/03 02:45 AM (22.214.171.124)
Here's the Q/A from the second Chat. Thanks TheDeadlyShoe!
2.1 – Do researches and commercials still use the 4:1 ratio?
2.2 – What is the etiquette for applying to a faction?
Most faction leaders are looking for a description of your goals and attitudes about the game. Some are looking for peaceful people, others want warriors, others want a mix. Mostly, people are looking for good natured, active folks who are going to be playing a lot and able to defend the rest of the faction. Your best bet is to apply and send a DR.Note: An automatic DR to the faction leader upon applying was added soon after this. That will allow the Faction Leader to ask you questions and what not... the problem with the application, is that it is a one way thing. You just give him a blurb. It's a cold guess for him whether you are some jackass or a player with promise.
2.3 – If I take a zone with weapons or other parts in armory do I get them?
Yes, you do. However, you only get 20% of the vehicles in armory in a given zone. Everything else, you get all of them.
2.4 – How long until I can research and build mechs?
Research for the most part is for large empires only. Smaller empires can research some things with time and patience, but mechs take a long, long time, and an immense research base. Check the new "Tech Tree" feature, it is helpful in this regard. Smaller empires can research tower designs and building sizes, which are very important.
2.5 – If I take a zone with factories, but I don't have any research, do I get the ability to build factories?
No. You need 50 CF researched.
2.6 – What is "Automatic Battle Resolution" (ABR)?
If a battle is idle for 30 minutes, the game does a quick and dirty auto-battle and determines kills and the winner. ABR helps a lot when attacking at low leve, as it enables you to "find" your enemies. Low level empires generally don't have sensors that are worth anything.
2.7 – What happens to bad people who hang around the edges in tournaments??
Cerro Torre hits 7th JEP-SRM with a charge on the right side for 240 points
2.8 – What's the deal with quests? Will there be low level quests? Individual quests?
The quest system is still being worked on. All quests right now are just tests. Eventually, it will be completely automated. There will be quests of all types for all levels. Currently, they take place on randomly generated maps.
2.9 – New features...?
Our big goal for this year is to implement a game-wide terrain system. A neveron-wide map, with mountains, rivers, plains, deserts, and other terrain, all displayed on the global map. The battle maps will then correspond to this global map...there will be more continuity between maps. Not as dramatic a shift. Sometimes, of course, just not as much. Will we have to re place units and towers? The current zones will change? Yes, but after that they will stay fixed....you will also get the ability to custom make your cities. You will be able to place buildings, build walls, dig moats, shift hills around... this will happen after the global map, since everyone's maps will change anyways. If you custom-made a city, and then the terrain changed, you'd be pissed...this will come after quests are finished. Additionally, new battle-map terrain types will be introduced. These include Desert, Water, Tundra, and Swamp, all with new effects. Water will reduce movement, but also reduce heat... Macro Terrain will tie into the Farms system Not implemented yet, not nearly, don't worry about it. and the resources system. Meaning, mines will probably appear in certain areas.
2.10 – Can I transfer DP to other logins?
No. DP is tied to logins. You can, however, move the login to another empire...
2.11 – Can I shoot through other units?
Yes. Units never block "Line of Sight".
2.12 – How does "selling" DP work?
We do not officially condone or support the "selling" of DP. What people typically do is find someone who wants DP, and then they donate with their login. Be careful when selling DP. You NEED to be in a faction to receive cash at all, and you need to be decent level to receive any amount of worthwhile cash transfer. It's generally a better idea to just directly convert or buy vehicles/mechs on the DP page, unless you know what you are doing...
2.13 – What tower should I research?
The first tower you research should always be "stealth" towers. These towers have minimum cost, and are one of the most effective units at delaying enemy forces. Generally, a stealth tower should be 25 "CF", with 5 stealth, 5 ECM, 5 Range, and 3 Power. You don't want any armor, as it just makes the tower more expensive. Same for guns. Additionally, mounting sensors lets you use a Stealth Tower as a basic sensors unit when defending a zone, something that's important for low levels. What towers should I use for flat zone defense? I would use an SRM-2 design with modified range. SRM-2s are really really cheap, get lots of crits, and are highly effective against infantry. Use a low amount of armor, that way you can afford to make more towers... they will die easily anyways, but can do decent damage before they die. If you have no towers right now, however... you always want to do a stealth design first.
2.14 – What's this about infantry being effective against towers?
If you can make it to zero range, via whatever method, a single hit by Infantry does 100 damage. Generally, that wll be sufficient to totally destroy a tower.
2.15 – What makes a good dueling unit?
Mostly it takes experience to learn which ones are doing well and why. Each unit has its weaknesses. Learning how to duel is an artform... your best bet is to join a faction that has good duelers in it. Start out small, with infantry, then work your way up.You earn money with it...
Really it's up to personal preference. Play around, see what you like. Some units are excellent on open terrain, or vice versa. It always depends on what you are facing. Here's what TDS put...
<TheDeadlyShoe> A good dueling unit.. generally... has a good prize value for its cost, excels at something, has no huge weaknesses that are easily exploited, and maintains a reasonable or low BV for its effectiveness....
2.15 – What's with "Do not attack -- Admin Testing"?
It's my old empire... we use it mostly for testing.
2.16 – I hear vehicles don't make money in arenas.
Yes, but only because vehicle prices have shot up so much. It's not true with all vehicles. You need to do the math on each one to really know.
2.17 – What's the fastest way to get money?
Landwar. The morale bonus, new infra structure, and plunder, can mean a very effective return on your investment.
2.18 – Is there a listing of all the vehicles?
Yes. It can be accessed through General Help. It's outdated, but there will be a new one soon.
2.19 – So If I attack something and lose, I can now attack them for free?
Yes. You only need to pay the attack fee if a nevmonth has passed since you last payed the attack fee.
2.20 – How do I repair my damaged mech?
Unless you have a repair facility, it's a good idea to join a faction. There are usually repair facilities in any given faction.
2.21 – Can we choose where towers are placed?
Yes. You place them when the towers are commisioned.
2.22 – How do Sensors work?
That gives a good overview. Read that to learn about sensors.
2.23 – If I press Declare War, will it declare immediatley or ask for a confirmation?
It asks for a confirmation.
2.24 – Should I research larger buildings?
Yes, up to a point. I only ever build 100 CF. The more CF a building has, the less cash-efficient it is. However, you need CF research to build a tower of that size.
2.25 – How does Small Empire Subsidy work?
It starts at $250,000. For every $2 that you earn from Tax and Commerce income, it goes down by $1.
2.26 – Doesn't a DoW mobilize all units?
If you are not in a faction, a DoW will mobilize all vehicles and mech units. If you are in a faction, it won't.
