Playing the other empires a bit.
      #79536 - 01/06/04 02:38 AM (24.196.181.92)

In a recent "modernizing" of Raven Moon, Director Tenshi unveiled his plans for the future of the empire. These plans involved the renaming of all current vehicle units to better match their tactical deployment. Other plans include an up-and-coming Arena presence with rumors than Tenshi himself will pilot one of the Arena entrants.

In other news, there have been reports of gangs popping up in the main city. To counter this threat, Tenshi spent several hundred thousand of his own personal funds to re-open several inner city clubs and groups, several of which emphasizing education. One of the more controversial expenditures was a large arcade, which replaces a run-down motel used most commonly by gangs and addicts, the arcade will have free games as well as free admittance. Tenshi was quoted as saying "If we do not provide education and entertainment for those with creative gifts, then they will provide it for themselves, possibly in a manner which does not suit the rest of the population. This will [hopefully] answer both the need for city beautification and renewal, and the need for entertainment in our youth."

Ghano was not really happy with the recent Inner City "Improvements". That old Hotel they had changed had been his only source of income. A room there rented for 100-1000 nev$ per hr., depending for what it was used. His customers sometimes even payed him "in naturals" , the drug and weapon dealers as well as the girls...well, his 3 wifes would be more than happy with the change in this respect. But then, he had to provide them with their daily doses of Spiff, and the children needed food and stuff. He had realized there was only one thing left he could hope to make money with, after the presets for his former business all were gone. When the Inner City still was in the Hands of the Gangs, rooms sevured against eavesdropping, with bulletproof doors and windows, had been used a lot. Or those equipped with giant french beds and clean bathrooms... now there wouldn´t be any use for them anymore anyway.

Not being able to commit himself to real crimes, Ghano really had enojyed his time as a Concierge. Not to mention the huge profits he had made, even after the deduction of the 35% protetcion. Had he known these changes would come up, there might have been a chance to talk to the protectors, to set some money aside, but now! His funds were decreasing rapidly...

"Omo" he yelled, not looking up from his desk, "did you manage to get these replacement heatsinks you were talking about yesterday?" Omo, his chief and only mechanic, smiled brightly. Since the announcement of an Inner City Duelling Ground, he was able to use his premier skills again: tuning and repairing of light duelling ´Mechs. "Sure Ghano. They will arrive in an hour or two. But I will need some more hands to finish the repairs on your Dueller."

Ghano looked at him. Then he let his eyes wander to the 1E which was standing in the middle of their makeshift repairbay. Did he really have a chance to make money with that old machine ? Was it worth putting most of what he had left into the repairs? And how should he come up with the entrance fee for his first fight? "Ok, go and pick some guys whose hands you can trust. And make sure you totally remove any trace of the Kurita FieldSigns !" Maybe, just maybe finally his family heritage prooved to be of some real value. Ahh...what the hell! The possibility to kick the directors butt alone was worth all the money and effort!

While putting his body into the suit, Ghano remebered the quite voice of his father. "Dont underestimate that Mech, Ghano! You can run at full speed and still fire all its weapons continuosly, it wont overheat as long as it has no critical damage! Not many of your future opponents will have that capability at their hands. But it needs a determined and well trained Warrior to fully utilize that advantage." He had been missing their training sessions, and the precise debrief afterwards, since his father had died. But that was a long time ago. Ghano walked over to the simulator, got himself in the cockpit, connected the suit and put the etrodes on his forehead. With a sigh he started the beginners first tutorial. It explained the technical specs of his ´Mech, and how they would influence actual fighting.

He felt much more positive about his future now. Remebering his father had somehow touched what had long been unused, buried. He knew it was still in there. He knew he could trust his capabilities as Mechwarrior. He just had to resurrect them.

When reading your story, I spontaneously felt to add to it, this is what came out. I hope you dont mind? If you dont like it, maybe I can get the post removed. On the other hand, maybe we can continue this story? Maybe yet another person kicks in...

[I like, I like. Now if the Director was piloting a mech they could meet. Then again, seems he goes up against tougher opponents a lot, so who knows... Feel free to continue the story, though, it looks really interesting... I want to know what happens to Ghano and his ex-Kurita 1E. If you want me to reply, it'll be a bit. I don't have any dueling characters off-hand, but I could come up with one.]

[Came up with a dueler, little rough around the edges yet so bear with me on his personality...]

Wind was seated in the corner of the mess hall, poking at what appeared to be some sort of meat with a plastic fork. The rest of the mess hall was filled with hooligans and buccaneers, all out to make an honest (or not so honest in some cases) nev-buck. It was the mess hall for 'mech arena pilots, in their off-time. Wind sat in the corner to avoid the rest of the riff-raff. It wasn't because he was better, per se. He just had a different way of dueling. Mercy was something given and taken by those with nothing else left, something he deemed to be below him. Of course, a little arrogance always was good to back up with skills.

"Why you! I'll beat you five ways from Sunday!"
"Just try it you overgrown Jeep driver!"

Two men's tempers grew to blows, but was quickly resolved by the local marine force. For his part, Wind had been in a few bar fights. Nothing in these halls, the guards were far less lenient than a bar owner just looking for some peace. The two men were escorted to opposite sides of the room, to the dueling chambers. Best to let their aggression out in a battle, not words. At least that's what all the spectators wanted. Standing from his meal and carrying the tray to the return rack, he exhaled softly. As he was musing over finding a place to sleep for the night (instead of his cockpit again) he was grabbed by the arm and turned to face a much-too-burly arena helper. The man looked as if he was juiced on every steroid known to man, horse or elephant. Wind said nothing, only listened.

"You's up next, 'gainst somethin new. Not real sure what, just 'member the 1E variant. Little surprise good for ya, eh?" The man grinned with his mouth half-full of teeth. Wind had seen brighter voids in space, but he obligingly nodded his thanks to the man and moved toward the "Blue Team" arena door. He wasn't piloting his favored Phoenix Hawk, only a light mech this time, a Firefly.

['course, all RP and no real arena. I don't actually have a firefly. ^.^ Take it away ]

"Lyran Hearts"
"Lyran Hearts"

It's hot and dry. The stench of the crowd mixes with the smell of burnt hexagen and hot metal.

"Lyran Hearts"

The second yell is swallowed by a wave of exhilaration, caused by a series of explosions. A painfully loud detonation.

The vendor doesn't care.

"Lyran Hearts"
"Lyran Hearts"

Up the stairs a stout man walks towards the vendor.
"mitsu"

The main fight has started in the pit, the mob gets more and more excited. Ambigiuous cries of esteem and aversion in the crowd's clamour. Wind.

Still the vendor doesn't care.
Coins clang. The customer leaves - Yakuza, the vendor knows.

Silence

Wet choking from below.

Next to the pit orders are exclaimed, in japanese.

A gobo starts to run up the stairs of the amphitheatre, towards the exit.

The crowd is in a frenzy again. Ozone suppresses all other smells.

Gobo.
Yakuza.
Bright red sunlight is being reflected by the blade.

Three pink apple sized balls roll down the stairs. Small cracks develop in their sugar icing. As if he want's to pick them up, the Yakuza bends. But then he decides to leave them. He's walking up the stairs again.

Small clouds of black caustic smoke are blown by the thermal up the tribunes. A locust is emitting them.

A boot.
Clear golden liqueur creeps out of the smashed lyran heart. One half of the mellow Chegnorpeach has been squeezed into the notches of the floor. Chips of the icing melt in the tiny puddle of honeylike spirit. It is mixing with blood driping from a higher step.

The melted sand of the pit, an evidence of bad aiming with lasers, emits an odour most of the crowd can not notice.
The vendor loves it.

People start to move. The fight is over.

"Lyran Hearts"

Re: Playing the other empires a bit. [Re: Tenshi]
      #80010 - 01/13/04 08:47 PM (213.122.187.83)

Rain hit the back of Lachlan MacKinnon’s neck as he stepped out of hired jeep and stared up at the once majestic hotel now little more than a shadow of its former self. MacKinnon pulled up his collar in a forlorn hope of keeping his back dry and walked over to hotel’s entrance where a small boy sat huddled in in order to get out of the rain.
“Spare some credits mister?”, the child asked.
“I might”, the Scotsman replied, “but I’m looking for someone. His name’s Ghano. I heard he owned this hotel.”
“He did sir”
“Do you know where I can find him?”
“The amphitheatre. He has a duel today.”
MacKinnon thanked the boy and threw him a couple of Nev$.

The traffic was heavy as he made his way towards the amphitheatre. The sky had cleared somewhat, yet his mood hadn‘t lifted. There wasn’t much, however, in his life to make him smile, least of all his line of work. He didn’t often think of his targets, they were just jobs that needed done, or of the people that gave him the work, faceless ghosts that he seldom met and never had names. It was the wives, daughters, fathers, mothers, the people of left behind. He was haunted by ghosts of the living. It was little consolation that this time his brief had been to take the target in alive.

Stopped by the traffic MacKinnon watched the last drops of rain trace their way down his windscreen. He found himself thinking of Catriona. She was a Lieutenant when he’d left. He hated himself for leaving but he had no choice. He was just a NCO and her husband was a Lieutenant seconded to the commander-in-chiefs own company. Being alive without her was better than her having to attend his funeral, something that he was reminded of almost daily, but the fact still remained that the one thing that had made him happy and he’d let go.

MacKinnon pulled up as close to amphitheatre as the crowds would allow him. It was clear that duels had already started. Lighting a cigarette he made his way towards the stands. Fighting his way through the crowds, monitors told him that Ghano’s duel had already started. Pushing people out the way he battled his way up the steps. His way cleared as people filed off to their seats.

A man pushed past MacKinnon, something about him sparked recognition but that was instantly overshadowed by the sight of a Locust burning in the arena.

------------------------------------------------
Just thought I'd add my own little story-line to this. C'mon people who hired him and why? What is the relevance of the Yakuza or indeed the vendor? What is Ghano's fate? I eagarly await the next installment...

Ghano was done with. His life, and the Life of his wives, and Kids, wasnt worth a penny anymore. He was still wondering how that loss could have happened.

Once he had gone through all the trainingprogramms on his simulator, he felt it was time to go and acquire that money he needed as entrance fee for his first duel. So he turned to his former protectors, Yakuza of course, and suggested a deal. They would give him the 15 mio. Would he win, he would pay back 20. Would he loose, they would get all that was left of his mech. They agreed immediately.

So he took the chip, went to the Duelling Grounds, walked up the booth, hit the slot and then got his instractions about the conduct of the Duel. His face went pale while the machine talked. It was the rules that the winner of the Duel would get the salvage...

Naturally, he got nrevous to the bone. He didnt bother to walk into the duellers mess, did not want his opponent be able to see his pale face and somehow shivering hands. All he knew was, the guy he was gonna fight had some xperience with Arena fights, and not a bad of a reputation.

When the duell was announced, he climbed into his Locust and got himself and the machine ready. Signal came, and transport into the Arena was immediate. Then, everything happened really quick. Bfore he knew it, the heat inside his cockpit was going up rapidly. He couldn´t see the other guy. HIs engine got hit another time...red lights flashing all over, he ejected, just in time to escape the engine explosion.

Now, while he was still on his way coming down, he knew that he might not be alive 15 minutes from here, and his family even less...

-----------------------------------------------------------------
is anyone feeling able to give us a good battlereport between the 2 machines (I dont, havent fought anough mechduells by now). Would be interesting to read how wind killed Ghanos mech.

I've only LWed, so no arena experience. Do my best by combining LW and writing practice though.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wind watched the smouldering remains of the Locust with dismay. The much smaller mech shouldn't have been in the arenas with him, though most of his skill was in his ability to fly through the air like the Wind, hence his namesake, the sheer cost of the mechs was such a distance apart... The winner's buzzer woke him from his daze and he turned the Firefly toward Blue Gate. Out of the corner of his viewscreen he saw the smoke trail of an ejection pod drift by, it lightened his mood marginally.

Already the crowd was chanting for blood, though. They wanted a real duel, and in the spirit of the arenas which bred the bloodfest the gates closed again. After all, anything to make a quick mil, said the gaming comission. Out of the Red Gate, which was nearly right behind him, sprung a heavy mech which was enough to wipe out the combined strength of the Locust and the Firefly.

Grunting and gritting his teeth, he slammed the jump jets wide open and took to the air, spinning with balance jets and facing the heavy. A barrage of lasers followed the erratic movement, leaving burn marks across it's flesh but doing little else. In return, an autocannon fired and glanced his right actuator. The light Firefly nearly was knocked out of the sky, but through some miracle he managed to get closer to the huge beast. Red and white beams of energy flashed by him as he came down, now unable to fire. It wasn't until he felt the satisfying crunch of cockpit that he grinned to himself. The autocannons fired again, blindly missing with notihng to aim them...seems the poor pilot had gotten stuck on the firing controls.

As the Firefly slid off of it's larger opponent, it fell in a kneeling position. This time the crowd was booing, they didn't like quick, clean kills. The arena masters weren't about to waste more on him, either. This time stepping the now-limping Firefly into the Red Gate, he moved toward one of the "stables". The knee actuator was shot now, as was his right shoulder and most of his armor from that laser fire. He hadn't even realized what he'd been fighting was the scary part.

As he stepped down off the ladder and took off his helmet he saw Ghano making his way back from the "collection" center, a gathering of helicoptors and jeeps that recovered ejected pilots. They wouldn't be gathering up more than protoplasm from that last one...

"Hey, you new to the circuits? I noticed you were having a little mechanical trouble there during our duel."

[There we go, now they've met and hopefully can get to talking...I'm thinking with Wind's disdain for the criminal-types, Ghano's got more of a chance of paying off that debt somehow. Not sure how, quite yet, but somehow.]

comment: I was thinking of this, too...wind giving Ghano a chance...also, the twist of the YakuzaProblem is them having known that they wont get any of the salvage (of course...ghano is a kind of naive guy), so now he ows them 15 mill. Of course his and his families live are not in danger...the yakuza owns them now. Just havent found anything I can make out of that setup, but maybe yet again another creative spirit can kick in?

Ghano looked at the guy talking to him. He was wondering what technical problem he was speaking about. Anyway, he did not feel like talking, but since the tone was friendly, he answered anyway. Would not make any sense to try to escape the Yakuza, and a friendly conversation is not the worst to end ones life with.

" Erh...I think one of the reasons I lost was, I did not realize the mechanical problem you are speaking about. And yes, I am new, totally new. That was my first fight, and the last I am afraid. You are one hell of a MechWarrior. I mean, I lost sight of you as soon as we started, and next thing I know, my mech explodes. How did you acquire these skills?"

Well, take your time. I think the Yakuza would love to know Wind through contacts, considering his (roleplaying only) dueling record of 12 wins and no losses. As for how we'll work it...like you said, they own him now. And since they own him, they can use that to get what they want, and most mafia types aren't averse to using their connections' connections, yaknow?

Is good to get some more background on wind, Ryuu. I am wondering what sdocs insert with the vendor means, I have to admit it did not understand too much of it. Maybe O can get some exp. how it fits into the writing so far, or someone picks that trait up and takes it a bit further, so I can understand more.

A direction for the wind-ghano-yakuza thing would now be, of course, the yakuza having wind fight setup duells, so they can make betting money off these fights. But how does wind get so closely get connected to Ghano that he is willing to do that?

Still suffering from a bit of writers block. Why is the bounty-hunter/hitman after Ghando? I haven't thought that through enough except that maybe its to do with his debts and/or his past. Actually, his past might fit in well, it could explain why he's wanted alive so need to know a bit more about his past first.

Ok. I will come up with at least a short insight, and some traits for further developement, about Ghanos past. I will also try to get sdoc ( I know where to meet him in chat) to post some comment, or further writing, for us so we can connect to it.

[Better late than never I imagine... I've been playing Wind a bit longer now in Nev, so I have more of a feel for his persona. He's a 2/7 pilot oddly enough, and I gave him a Phoenix Hawk for kicks and whaddaya know he's been winning, lol...]

Wind looked up at the grey sky while pondering the question. Where he aquired his skills was, for lack of a better word, complicated. Finally he smiled and returned his eyes to the man walking beside him.

"I have practiced, most of all. In many battles I have used jump jets to my advantage, and feel them more as an extention of myself now. It is something that only comes with time, I am told."

His accent was somewhat lyrical, obviously not Neveronian in the slightest. He didn't come across as "rich" exactly, simply that he could take care of himself and carried few memories. A utilitarian black jumpsuit adorned his lythe form, and wild cyan-colored hair draped down past his shoulders and to the edge of his shoulderblades. With a bit of make-up he could pass for a woman...

"And as for mechanical trouble, I assumed your Locust was experiencing problems after a certain point. My sensors picked up increasing heat levels without a suitable amount of fire, which usually means a critical engine hit."

They neared the paddock in which arena duelists were to sign for their winnings or losses, and that same half-toothless burly man stood by the gate, making sure all of the people coming and going were duelists. With a small quirk of his lips Wind knelt very slightly over the console and tapped a few keys, bringing up their dueling information.

"A pleasure, Gheno. My callsign is Wind, though I am known by Ian as well."
