"If the enemy is in range, so are you."
Not true, a unit with an LRM weapon can show that the enemy is in range, and the enemy unit could be a MG jeep, with a max range on 3, so its not the same range as the LRM missle. Secondly, there is such a thing as Line of Sight [LoS]. Even if inside a weapons firing range, it does NOT mean that unit can fire its weapons at the enemy. Other units you own may have the enemy unit in sight, and so all your units can see the enemy. Once your units can see the enemy, they automatically check any units within thier range for a shot. LoS stops many of those shots from ever getting fired.
"The easy way is always mined."
Mines are randomly placed on the zone, and are not controlled in any manner by the empire owners, other than the effort to actually research them, and assign the needed Class Point to actually make mines active in your empire.
Defender Class Level 1 BONUS FOR EVERY LEVEL: 2% (per level) chance that each attacking unit will take damage from land mines every time a zone is attacked if you have land mines researched!.
