History[edit]

Formation[edit]

The Twelfth Dieron Regulars were one of thirty-one regiments of Dieron Regulars to be created by the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery after 2765.[3] The Dieron Regulars expanded by ten regiments during the Amaris Civil War,[2] and a further twenty-one regiments were raised between the end of the Civil War and the end of the First Succession War. The Twelfth was one of the ten regiments created between 2765 and the end of the Civil War in 2779.[2] During General Kerensky's Exodus preparations, the Twelfth Dieron Regulars were deployed to Bob to counter any aggressive SLDF moves.[4]

Third Succession War[edit]

In 3025 the unit was stationed on Ashio.[5]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

War of 3039[edit]

The Twelfth Dieron Regulars were deployed alongside a sister regiment, the Twenty-seventh Dieron Regulars, to recapture Athenry, in July 3039. The task force was notionally under the command of Sho-sho Yawatono Kurita, a member of the Kurita family, who was a less able field commander but well-regarded by his command as a lucky mascot. Athenry had been captured by two regiments from the Blue Star Irregulars mercenary command, the 1894th Light Horse and Twenty-first Rim Worlds, who had won grudging acceptance from the local population, but both regiments lacked experience of waging a defensive campaign, and instead preferred to operate as rapid-reaction forces rather than preparing and holding fortifications. The Irregulars aerospace fighters contested the invasion in space, scoring some successes - including disabling an Excalibur-class DropShip badly enough that it crashed in the Hoboken Sea, with relatively few casualties among the embarked personnel, but with most of the tanks aboard wrecked by water damage, along with the DropShip itself.[6]

The Regulars began their campaign by regrouping and reorganizing before launching attacks against isolated islands and island chains defended primarily by infantry forces. The Regulars had bought submarines and blue-water hydrofoils and quickly captured the Larsen Island Chain, although the Irregulars aerospace fighters gave the infantry support where they could, with some islands only being captured after a naval barrage had shattered the defensive positions and the infantry themselves had been defeated in grueling hand-to-hand battles. In September the Regulars began clearing the Wandessa and Zubeckis island chains, as well as beginning air operations against the main allied positions in the Espalars, and in particular against the troops on the Lisbon Heights.[6]

In October the Regulars began clashing with the Irregulars main elements, particularly the 1894th Light Horse, building up to a beachhead landing at Hauk Point that led to a two-week stalemate as the Regulars tried and failed to break out of their landing zone, before a second beachhead was established at Myne Down and forced the Irregulars to pull back to the Agilar Pass. The mercenaries held the pass in the face of a determined assault; in an attempt to break the deadlock the Regulars began making artillery strikes, which the Irregulars responded to with their own counterbattery strikes. The level and tempo of artillery strikes steadily increased until it was nicknamed "materialschlact" - a direct reference to the massive artillery barrages in the buildup to the Battle of the Somme in the twentieth century on Terra. The artillery duel turned the valley into a battered mess resembling a moonscape, and forced the Irregulars to slowly withdraw, with sporadic small-scale engagements being waged up until the Twenty-seventh finally pushed the last of the Irregulars forces contesting the valley from their redoubt in the ski resort of Kolos. The Dieron Regulars were faced with the battle for the capital, New Senna, but both the DCMS forces and the Irregulars were exhausted by three months of constant combat, and both knew that the battle for the city would be bloody and exact a high toll on the civilian population. The commanding officer of the Irregulars, General Alex Duff-Gordon, elected to negotiate a withdrawal in early December, and the Irregulars left Athenry on the 10th. The decision to abandon Athenry was generally unpopular with the LCAF High Command - albeit being supported by General Nondi Steiner - but it also kept the total casualty count for the invasion and counterattack to just six thousand fatalities in total.[6]

Clan Invasion[edit]

The Twelfth Dieron Regulars were stationed on Ashio immediately prior to Operation REVIVAL.

Interwar Years[edit]

In 3056, the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery Bureau of Substitution detached two green battalions from the unit to form the 44th Dieron Regulars, which was then expanded to regimental strength.[7]

First Combine/Dominion War[edit]

The "new" Twelfth Dieron Regulars had to be reorganized in late 3062 after their time garrisoning the border world Kiesen was abruptly cut short by a retaliatory attack by Clan Ghost Bear early in the Combine-Ghost Bear War. The then-light Twelfth stood little chance against the heavy Ghost Bear forces, and the unit successful retreat left them widely perceived as defeated and dishonored.[8]

Federated Suns Incursion[edit]

After being receiving hasty upgrades the Twelfth went on to assist the 45th[citation needed] and 46th Dieron Regulars in defending Ashio from the 1st Robinson Rangers in late 3064. There, after rescuing the 46th, the unit took command of the combined Draconis forces on the planet.[8] The Twelfth moved on, and by 3066, the unit was active in the defense of Proserpina.[8]

Jihad[edit]

In the confusion of the Jihad the Twelfth Dieron Regulars (along with the 22nd Dieron Regulars) suffered serious losses at the hands of Clan Diamond Shark on Nykvarn in the mid-3070s. Reduced to 40% of their nominal strength, they were transferred to Luzerne to rebuild.[9]
