Star League Era
The origin of the Fifth Lyran Guards Division and her assorted sister divisions lay in the sheer size of the Lyran Guards brigade. The largest brigade within the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces during the Star League era - and possibly the Age of War and the early Succession Wars - the Lyran Guards was the only brigade to have a series of permanently-staffed headquarters established between the regimental and brigade levels. The original divisional structure called for each division to be responsible for ten regiments, but this practise came to include those regiments struck from the rolls over the history of the Lyran Guards. By 2765 only one division had a full ten active regiments under it's command: the First.
Originally established as the divisional headquarters for the Forty-first through Fiftieth Lyran Guards regiments, by the mid-twenty-eighth century the number of regiments commanded by the Fifth had dwindled to just six. Furthermore, two of those regiments - the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Lyran Guards - had originally been assigned to the Sixth Lyran Guards Division, but with the Sixth reduced to just two active regiments, the LCAF High Command made the decision to save millions of kroner per year in operating costs by disbanding the Sixth and rolling the two regiments into the Fifth.
In 2765 the regiments of the Fifth were distributed in garrisons across the Lyran Commonwealth, but half of the division - three regiments in total - were concentrated in the former Tamar Pact region, with two regiments based on Tamar itself and a third guarding the large Tamar Defense Industries complex on Oyevaina.
During this era the Lyran Guards lacked any particular political ties - either regional or familial - unlike other brigades and formations; commonly assigned to garrison postings, the regiments of the Lyran Guards were postings of choice for those who wanted to work for the Commonwealth without either regional loyalties or particular ambitions. This led to the Lyran Guards Divisions being manned by soldiers who were professional, but without the close-knit ties found in more parochial regiments. The LCAF was intent on generating more camaraderie and esprit de corps amongst the Lyran Guards regiments, but with little success by 2765.
