History[edit]

Early History[edit]

The Sixth Syrtis Fusiliers could trace its origins back to the Age of War or earlier and the private military force raised by House Hasek to defend its mining and drilling concerns on New Syrtis. The Syrtis Fusiliers became the private guard and personal army of the Hasek family, with their star rising alongside that of the Hasek family and New Syrtis; the Syrtis Fusiliers expanded, and as time progressed the brigade became the official guard of New Syrtis and then the perhaps the most important military command within the Capellan March Principality of the Federated Suns.[1]

Age of War[edit]

The Sixth Syrtis Fusiliers were traditionally the guard for the Duke of New Syrtis and served as the brigade's strongest defensive unit. Instead of engaging in offensive operations against foes, they responded to their foes' movements.[2] The bulk of the Syrtis Fusiliers brigade supported Prince David Varnay and his wife Cassandra Davion loyally throughout the Davion Civil War, opposing first the combined forces of Laura Davion and Nikolai Rostov and then First Prince Alexander Davion. At the end of the war Prince Alexander offered an amnesty to the survivors from the brigade, and reintegrated the Syrtis Fusiliers into the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns, the restructured military that replaced the Federated Peacekeeping Forces as the state military of the Federated Suns.[1]

Alexander's clemency towards the Syrtis Fusiliers and his subsequent actions in rebuffing the attempt by Richard Varnay to seize control of the Capellan March cemented the Fusiliers' loyalty to New Avalon and the wider Federated Suns.[1]

Star League Era[edit]

The Sixth took an unusual step during the War of Davion Succession. After Stephan Hasek died in a DropShip accident, the Sixth redeployed itself from New Syrtis to the Pleiades Cluster to protect his (unborn) heir. After Rita Hasek was born, the Sixth provided her protective detail wherever she went. As she also served in the Sixth, the unit received the unofficial nickname of "Rita's Retainers."[2]

Succession Wars Era[edit]

After the Fourth Succession War and Duke Michael Hasek-Davion's death, many officers in the Sixth were relieved of command and forced out of the service on charges of sedition. The unit might have faded away completely, but Morgan Hasek-Davion assumed command and rebuilt the unit.[3]

Clan Invasion Era[edit]

During Operation GUERRERO the Sixth Fusiliers were spread across multiple systems and lacked the strength to stop the CCAF advances. However, their combat prowess was demonstrated by the severe mauling they inflicted on several Capellan units, particularly Kamakura's Hussars, before they were forced to leave the Sarna March. After this they were stationed on Novaya Zemlya, where they trained other AFFS units in countering Capellan tactics.[3] In 3062, they were reassigned to garrison Hadnall.[4]

Civil War Era[edit]

During the FedCom Civil War the Sixth Fusiliers were assigned to Kathil.[5] There they kept fighting during the entire Civil War, refusing to let Allied or Loyalist forces take control of the vital factories. They took heavy losses, as did every unit assigned to the Kathil fighting. Several Davion Sunbursts of Gallantry and dozens of Syrtis Medals of Valor were received by members of the Sixth.[6] During the fighting they completely destroyed the Ridgebrook CMM as an effective force.[7] After the fighting on Kathil during the FedCom Civil War ended, the survivors of the Kathil CMM and First Capellan Dragoons were drafted into the Sixth Fusiliers.[8]

The Sixth garrisoned New Syrtis in 3067.[9]

Jihad Era[edit]

As part of Operation SOVEREIGN JUSTICE the Sixth reinforced the Illician Lancers at Hexare. They fought Paget's Dragoons on the world, and though they fought well, the collapse of other aspects of SOVEREIGN JUSTICE forced the two units to leave the world to the Capellan Confederation.[10] This fighting left the unit understrength in BattleMechs in 3079, but the Sixth retained nearly the full allotment of conventional and AeroSpace forces assigned to an RCT. As such, the Sixth wasn't reorganized into a Light Combat Team but remained a full Regimental Combat Team. This allowed them to retain their honor guard duties, which they had performed for 120 years. At the same time, they could deploy part of their force to garrison Hadnall.[11] In 3085, the Sixth was the most experienced Syrtis Fusiliers unit, and served as the honor guard on New Syrtis.[12]

The Sixth assaulted Victoria during the Dark Age. They faced the Warrior House Kamata, Kingston's, and Sung's Rangers around the city of Barns. A surprise assault by a platoon of CCAF Predator tank destroyers inflicted heavy losses on one of the Sixth's cavalry battalions, destroying nearly half the unit.[13] During that same conflict, Warrior House Kamata took advantage of a gap between the Sixth and the Forty-second Avalon Hussars to hit both AFFS units in the flanks and then withdraw before they could react.[14]

When the Capellan Confederation assaulted the Capellan March, the Sixth was stationed near St. Ives and stranded by a lack of transportation. They solved this problem by taking two JumpShips from Warrior House Imarra when that unit arrived at their garrison. The Sixth then went to Wappingers, where they engaged the Imarra soldiers. The fighting lasted long enough for New Syrtis to fall and for Duchess Hasek to be killed. This inability to defend their homeworld or liege lord destroyed the Sixth's morale.[15] The Sixth was recuperating on Carmacks.[16]

Dark Age Era[edit]

After the fall of New Syrtis to the Capellans, and the execution of Amanda Hasek, her son, Alexander Hasek, took command of the Sixth, and both disappeared by some time, reappearing to launch raids against the occupying Capellans.[17]

ilClan Era[edit]

The Sixth Fusiliers returned to New Syrtis in March 3151, along with Alexander, who soon became the new Duke of the Capellan March. The Sixth was one of the units chosen by Hasek to unilaterally invade the Taurian Concordat, beginning the Pleiades War. However, the unit's situation was far from ideal: recently, Alexander had created a new offensive unit, the Syrtis Scourge, loyal only to him... drawing the best soldiers from the Sixth, so they were critically weakened. The two -understrength- regiments were the only ones the Duke took in his invasion, departing on 20 June.[18]

However, the invasion of the Pleiades Cluster went well, initially: taking advantage of surprise, they took the planet Electra easily. Hasek left the Sixth on the planet as garrison, after setting up a command post, while he continued forward, taking only the Scourge to Maia.[19]

On 21 August, heavy Taurian forces arrived on Electra. Unable to hold against several regiments, General Duran retreated into the Delphine Gorge, but after the Taurians informed him that they had destroyed the Scourge on Maia and captured Hasek, the demoralized general parlayed with the Third Taurian Lancers to retreat to Federated Suns space, abandoning the planet and the Pleiades Cluster. That put an end to the Suns' offensive part in the war.[20]

Game Rules[edit]

Star League Era[edit]

During any scenario where the Sixth fights on New Syrtis, they are immune to the Communications Disruption special ability. When the Sixth is the defender and mapsheets are randomly chosen, the Sixth's player may choose the mapsheets for the scenario instead of rolling for them. The Sixth can then deploy up to a quarter of its force using Hidden Units rules.[33]
