Planet(s)5[1]

The Baxter system was the location of at least one habitable world, Baxter IV, and as of 3145 was located in the Skandia Province of the Rasalhague Dominion.[2][3]

System Description[edit]

Baxter is located close to the Corridan and Kimball systems[2][3] and consists of a class K7II primary orbited by five planets.[1]

System History[edit]

The Baxter system was colonized during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra and was a member of the Federation of Skye when Lyran Commonwealth was founded in the mid-twenty-fourth century.[4]

Baxter IV, more commonly referred to simply as Baxter, is the fourth planet of five in the Baxter system and has a single moon, T'Laus.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Dark Age[edit]

During the Dark Age the inhabitants of Baxter lived in modified low-profile buildings and cities or modified caves found in the mountain ranges. A few legends of lost cities persisted: these legends claimed that some inhabitants of Baxter moved their entire city into underground chambers that were subsequently crushed in the earthquakes. Scientists believed that things would return to normal for Baxter once T'Laus returned to a stable orbit, but how long this will take remained a mystery.[1]

Baxter's economy took a serious hit when it lost its farmland, but by the thirty-second century it was recovering slowly. Unlike other worlds, the number of minerals and metals deposits on the world was relatively low and those that existed were hard to acquire, so mining wasn't a large part of the economy. Instead Baxter's residents focused on exporting their sea life.[1]

Geography[edit]

Baxter is a world that experiences earthquakes, rockslides, and dust storms nearly every day. This is due to the severe gravitational stresses and tides exerted on the world by its moon, T'Laus. A large comet or rogue world apparently came close to hitting T'Laus, and the near collision set the moon on an erratic orbital path. The resulting tidal stresses caused a great deal of upheaval in Baxter's ecosphere, with much of the arable land on the planet having become deserts by the thirty-second century.[1]

The only habitable world in the Baxter system, Baxter has three continents. The northern continent was named Atropia, while the equatorial and southern continents were named Delgado and Hermathia respectively. Of the three continents, Atropia had more large mountain chains than the other two continents, as well as more fault lines.[1]
