Planet(s)7[1]

The Caselton system is home to at least one habitable world, Caselton II, and as of 3145 Caselton was located in the Robinson Operational Area of the Draconis March within the Federated Suns.[2][3]

System Description[edit]

The Caselton system is located near the Mirach and Schedar systems[2][3] and consists of seven planets orbiting a class K2IV primary.[1]

The system holds at least one asteroid belt, called the Cassini Belt, where asteroid mining was taking place as of 3069.[4]

System History[edit]

The Caselton system was colonized during the First Exodus from Terra.[5][6]

Caselton II - more commonly known simply as Caselton - is the second planet of seven in the Caselton system.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Despite being similar to Terra in several respects, Caselton was too dry and too cold to easily grow large amounts of Terran crops. Similarly it had enough mineral resources to support its population, but not enough to export. This resulted in a world with a low population that enjoyed zero population growth during the Dark Age.[1]

Succession Wars[edit]

The only real asset Caselton possessed was its proximity to Tikonov. Though the Capellan Confederation briefly held the world in the First Succession War, Caselton was under the control of the Federated Suns for most of its history. The AFFS took advantage of the system's proximity to Tikonov by establishing heavy defenses against CCAF raids, including several underwater and underground command centers and military bases.[1]

First Succession War[edit]

Caselton was invaded during the first half of the major invasion into the Federated Suns launched by the Draconis Combine in May 2787.[17] In 2795, following the appointment of Sandol Quinn as regent to Ilsa Liao, the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces launched an invasion of the Federated Suns intended to capture the politically significant Chesterton system. Planned by Quinn, the operation was intended to take advantage of the AFFS' continuing focus on trying to resist the massive Draconis Combine invasion of the Federated Suns, which stood poised to capture New Avalon itself. The first worlds to be targeted were Caselton and Mirach; in April 2795 Quinn used elements of the Northwind Highlanders and the Fourth Tau Ceti Rangers, both Star League Defense Force units turned mercenary, to attack the two worlds. The defending forces were a mix of AFFS regulars and militia forces, and had suffered for years from broken supply chains while deploying a large part of their strength in efforts to aid forces still fighting on worlds occupied by the Combine. As a result, the defenders quickly crumbled in the face of the assault, and by August 2795 the CCAF had rotated in line regiments to hold both worlds, freeing up the Highlanders and Rangers to launch invasions of Demeter and Farwell.[18]

Jihad[edit]

Cassini Belt's site "2B" was attacked by Cumberland's Missiliers on 10 September 3069 on orders of Mr. Askai.[4]

When the Missiliers were leaving they detected the first Word of Blake assault on Caselton in September 3069, where mercenaries in the employ of the Blakists made several attacks on Caselton but failed to seize the world.[61] While the Blakists eventually managed to occupy Caselton during the Jihad, AFFS forces landed on Caselton as well as the nearby worlds of Mirach and Schedar on the 2nd of December 3076 and attempted to liberate the world. The AFFS forces were unsupported by the allied coalition assembled by Devlin Stone, and the assaults were quickly slowed by the defending forces; it was reported that the assault was planned and launched by rogue elements within the AFFS command, explaining the lack of support from the coalition.[62][63]

The defenses built to resist Capellan raids stopped several Blakist assaults during the Jihad, but the Republic of the Sphere dismantled many of them during the post-Jihad peace.[1]

Republic Era[edit]

In 3126, workers for a local construction company, Caselton Consolidated Construction Professionals, went on a two-week work stoppage, barricading themselves and their IndustrialMechs in place on the site of Battlement's then-new opera house. Secretly, the strikers had the backing of Legate Dumaka Odoh, who saw the chance to create a threat to justify a security budget increase. Eventual bloody and destructive clashes between the strikers, armed with equipment provided by Odoh, and the planetary militia led to the resignation of Governor Lafontaine Avendout and the arrest of Legate Odoh.[58]

Geography[edit]

Caselton has two main continents named Embrasure and Merlon.[1]

The fact that the world was primarily settled for military reasons is reflected in the names of the continents and capital city. The capital, Battlement, is located on the continent of Embrasure while Merlon missed the opportunity to have the capital.[1] Battlement, Merlon, and Embrasure are all terms from military engineering, specifically fortifications.
