The Derf system is the location of at least one habitable world, and as of 3152 was located in the Clan Hell's Horses Occupation Zone.[1][2]

System Description[edit]

Derf is located near the Trell and Wotan systems. It is also within one jump of the Dark Nebula.[1][2]

System History[edit]

The Derf system was colonized at some point between 2334 and 2338 during early colonization efforts by the Rim Worlds Republic.[3]

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

Derf was one of seven worlds settled by colonists from the Rim Worlds Republic between 2334 and 2338 as an attempt by Maxwell Rowe to create a buffer zone between the Republic, the Draconis Combine and the Tamar Pact.[3]

By the end of the Age of War, Derf was a part of the Apollo Province of the Rim Worlds Republic.[4]

Reunification War[edit]

Civil war erupted in the Rim Worlds Republic in 2575, with the factions polarized around those loyal to First Consul Gregory Amaris and those loyal to the Rift Republican Army and the Rim Provisional Government.[42] The Star League eventually decided to intervene in the civil war in support of Gregory Amaris, and in 2579 assembled a multinational force headed by the Star League Defense Force to help secure Amaris' control over the Rim Worlds Republic.[43]

The conquest of Derf was a campaign that took longer than originally planned due to the level of resistance offered by the civilian population. General Nathan Isaacson of Battle Group Apollo assigned the Seventeenth Royal Division—one of three divisions that comprised VI Corps—to conquering Derf in 2586, but even a year after the planetary capital had been occupied, instances of civil unrest were still occurring.[44][45]

Star League Era[edit]

Derf was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth during the 27732775 Republic-Commonwealth War.[14]

Clan Invasion[edit]

First Wave[edit]

After the first confirmed contact with the Clans and their returning forces in the Inner Sphere, Cranston Snord would reveal the locations of abandoned Star League facilities that they he and the Snord's Irregulars had discovered over the years to Jaime Wolf and the Wolf's Dragoons. This was part of an effort to help strengthen the available defenses against the invaders. As the front line edged deeper into the Federated Commonwealth with the Clan Jade Falcon advance, it neared the Dark Nebula. Cranston and Jake Walmar remembered rumors, but no hard information, they had uncovered over the decades about a Star League naval base within the Dark Nebula. They realized that if the facility actually existed it would make an excellent staging area to resist the Clan invaders. In an effort to discover the location of the facility, Cranston would travel to well known Star League era archives on Derf and Wotan that contained ancient star charts and astrological data that may hold the location of the facility. While they did not find the information they were looking for, the data that was found led them to the location of an abandoned astrological survey station on Apollo where they may find the coordinates of the base within the Dark Nebula.[46]

Second Wave[edit]

Derf was conquered by Clan Jade Falcon during the Second Wave of Operation Revival in May 3050. The Third Falcon Talon made their landing on the planet, intending to finish off the survivors from the Twelfth Donegal Guards who had escaped from Trell I. However, so disheartened were the Donegal Guards at their earlier defeat that many simply gave up without a fight. Those few who continued to resist were easily crushed and by the end of the day the planet belonged to the Jade Falcons.[47]

Jihad[edit]

The planet was invaded again during the Jihad, when Clan Ice Hellion launched an invasion of Clan Jade Falcon holdings in the Inner Sphere in early 3071. Derf was invaded by the Ice Hellions between 7 and 28 June 3071, but the Ice Hellion invasion stalled as heavy fighting continued on Wotan and other worlds throughout July 3071.[32][33] The Ice Hellions finally captured Derf in late 3071, when Star Captain Vandal Hildenrath led the 401st Striker Trinary to the system. In late December, forces from Clan Jade Falcon's Alpha Galaxy arrived to recapture the world, and a Star Commander named Elric led a batchall for a Trial of Possession for the planet. Hildenrath defeated Elric's forces in battle in Reichman's Valley, killing two of his MechWarriors, but subsequently allowed him to challenge her to a Trial of Grievance for the planet. The Trial was fought via a game of chess, which Hildenrath lost intentionally; the loss allowed her to withdraw with her forces and follow saKhan Connor Rood's general call to withdraw, joining her forces with his in the Somerset system in late January 3072.[34]
