Cavanaugh Theater

(Redirected from Dixie Theater)

History & Description[edit]

The Cavanaugh Theater (known as the Dixie Theater during and after the Jihad) was a regional command for the Lyran state.

Succession Wars[edit]

In 3025, the Cavanaugh Theater was one of three provinces responsible for the Free Worlds League border, together with Ford Theater and Wyatt Theater.[1]

Clan Invasion[edit]

Under the Federated Commonwealth, the Cavanaugh Theater was, together with the Ford Theater, one of the two subcommands of the Tamarind March.[2] Following Katherine Steiner-Davion's secession of the Lyran Alliance, the provincial borders were reorganized into a system of five provinces, with the bulk of the realm divided up into four wedges but with Skye Province unchanged. Each province was divided into an internal core region and a theater for border worlds. [3] This reorganization was completed by 3061, and Cavanaugh Theater was designated as the border region of Bolan Province.[4]

Civil War[edit]

Trouble came early to the Cavanaugh Theater when Kristen's Krushers arrived on Arcadia and were shattered by the Second Donegal Guards.[5] Unit leaders in the area braced for conflict with the FWLM, but the Margrave of Cavanaugh Theater, Richard Steiner, managed to smooth tensions through high-level communications with League leadership.[6] Cavanaugh Theater was home to one of the Civil War's early meat grinders in the form of Giausar, a battle that would rage until 3065[7].

As the fighting on Giausar wrapped up, though, heavy fighting broke out on the theater headquarters world of Cavanaugh II. Publicly, Richard had been presenting himself as apolitical, telling the commander of the 10th Lyran Regulars he was committed to serving the Alliance by protecting the border rather than get embroiled in a family squabble. Privately, however, Richard saw the pro-Victor Tenth Regulars as a threat to be destroyed and asked his mother for additional troops. Nondi refused her son's request, forcing him to seek support on his own. Richard managed to win over the 7th Lyran Regulars and 1st Bolan Jaegers, and concealed the incoming units until they were right on top of the Regulars. He then chose to antagonize the local Com Guard division, pushing them into aligning with the Tenth against him.[8]

Throughout 3066, Richard Steiner's position on his headquarters world eroded, largely due to his own attempts to micromanage his forces. When the commander of the 7th Regulars fell in combat and his successor advocated coming to terms with the Allies, Richard accused her of treason and executed her. Rather than serve as a lesson to those unwilling to fight, defections (something Richard's forces were already struggling to contain) surged in number, leaving them sorely outmatched.[9] In February 3067, the Allies made their last push to Richard Steiner's command bunker. Despite their Margrave's orders to fight to the last, most of the remaining Loyalists began to lay down their arms, leaving only Richard's personal bodyguards and automated defenses. By the time they reached him, though, Richard had already fled.[10]

Jihad[edit]

Richard was replaced as Margrave by General Caesar Steiner in the wake of Peter Steiner-Davion becoming Archon.[11] Caesar was assassinated in 3068, which Robert Kelswa-Steiner swiftly blamed on the Free Worlds League as part of his plan to convince Bolan to join him in his Invasion of the Free Worlds League.[12] The Marik counterattack proved to be disastrous for the region, resulting in the capture of many key worlds in the region. Cavanaugh II itself fell to the League in September of that year.[13] Theater command was relocated to Dixie, with the region renamed the Dixie Theater. Though Cavanaugh was retaken by 3081,[14] and on paper was once again theater headquarters, in reality the Lyran state was taking the move slowly, both to focus on building up Cavanaugh's defenses and out of concern for a surprise attack from the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey.[15]

Dark Age[edit]

After the formation of the Wolf Empire, the Lyran Commonwealth dissolved Bolan Province and, with it, the Cavanaugh Theater. The remaining worlds still in Lyran hands were folded into the Timbuktu Theater.[16]
