Arena Gladiator

History[edit]

As of 3007 Frank Mulburry was a mercenary MechWarrior associated with the Lone Wolves mercenary cartel and operating on Rochelle in Free Worlds League employ.

Following a drawn-out defense campaign that had inflicted heavy casualties and outright crushed many small mercenary commands working for the League, House Marik tried to patch up their own decimated forces by confiscating equipment from their own mercenaries, citing unclear salvage clauses in their contracts. This was not a wise movement, as some of those mercenaries tried to resist. This sparked unrest when some mercenaries resisted. In this situation, the League forces pitted loyal mercenaries against rogue mercenaries in an attempt to generate yet more salvage that they could eventually salvage.

When renegade mercenaries approached the Arzenburg starport in a bid to escape off-world, Mulburry in his Charger–still upholding his contract–was ordered to scout the plains, a mission his 'Mech was obviously poorly suited for. The resulting tensions led to Mulburry challenging Captain Luc Brandhauber, of the Fifteenth Marik Militia, to a duel in their respective 80-ton assault 'Mechs (Brandhauber piloting an AWS-8Q Awesome) in the forested swampland surrounding the Arzenburg spaceport.[1]

Mulburry fought very well, and used the muddy waters to manage to close with the Awesome without exposing himself much to its PPCs, and though he lost a side torso to flooding, he was gaining the upper hand when renegade mercenaries–McFinney's Manglers–appeared on the scene and immediately sided with their fellow mercenary, leading to the rest of Brandhauber's command lance to join the fray. The mercenaries prevailed in the fight. Mulburry escaped with the Manglers and subsequently started a gladiator career on Solaris VII, where his Charger was however eventually confiscated by the Free Worlds League for outstanding debts.[2]

Tactics[edit]

Frank Mulburry was apparently keenly aware of the strengths and weaknesses of his Charger, to the point where he challenged the pilot of an Awesome (a 'Mech generally held to be vastly more powerful) to a duel where Mulburry actually gained the upper hand due to his clever use of the terrain, diving into the rivers and taking cover from woods to close the distance and engage the Awesome at point-blank range. Conversely, the falling-out between Brandhauber and Mulburry had been about Mulburry questioning orders to send him to scout the plains, where his Charger would have potentially been exposed to long-range fire from faster units that could dictate range, without appropriate cover.

Skills[edit]

Frank Mulburry was rated "regular" in 3007.[2]

Mech[edit]

Mulburry's 'Mech was a CGR-1A1 Charger until it was confiscated by the Free Worlds League for his outstanding debts.[1][2]
