The Kandersteg system was home to at least one habitable world, Kandersteg III, and as of 3151 was located in the Donegal Province of the Lyran Commonwealth.[3]

System Description[edit]

Kandersteg is located near the Summit and New Exford systems.

Political Affiliation[edit]

Kandersteg II (New Austria)[edit]

Planetary History[edit]

During the Star League era Kandersteg II was the site of an attempted terraforming effort by the Lyran government to create three habitable worlds in the system. While the oxygen level was raised slightly, it still remained uninhabitable in the thirty-second century.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Early history[edit]

First surveyed in the 2140s, the planet was initially dismissed as a colonization prospect by the Terran Alliance due to its distance from Terra. Sold by auction to Swiss-based Kandersteg Group, the habitable third planet of the system was dubbed "Kandersteg" by the Group's CEO. Despite the planet's name and owners' origins, the bulk of the first colonists actually hailed from Malaysia and Indonesia.[1]

The Outer Reaches Rebellion led to the Terran Alliance's abandonment of Kandersteg, although the planet's corporate masters remained in de facto control. Kandersteg continued to increase its population and economic growth as it became a mining and industrial center, and the Kandersteg Group's collapse in 2283 did not prevent the planet from surviving as a fully independent world.[1]

At first reluctant to join the nascent Lyran Commonwealth, Robert Marsden's decisive leadership style convinced Kandersteg's population to vote to join in 2383. The world thrived during the Age of War and Star League era, but damage from the early Succession Wars left Kandersteg struggling with the loss of advanced technology and the consequent impact upon the population. Recovery efforts enabled Kandersteg to become a moderately prosperous world once more by the end of the Third Succession War.[1]

Clan Invasion era[edit]

The Clan Invasion and establishment of the Jade Falcon Occupation Zone meant that Kandersteg, formerly far behind the lines during war, was now effectively a front-line world. A century of constant raiding by Jade Falcon warriors began, and Clan Wolf-in-Exile established an enclave on the planet. Kandersteg's government undertook several steps to improve the planet's defenses: bolstering the militia, attempting to have extra Lyran military assets assigned to the world, and supporting the Wolf Exiles' military industry in exchange for their support.[1]

FedCom Civil War[edit]

During the FedCom Civil War ComStar's 388th Division moved to Kandersteg in early 3063 after being attacked by Loyalist forces on Graceland.[35] When Clan Jade Falcon made their incursion into the Lyran Alliance the 388th left Kandersteg to return to Graceland.[36]

Jihad[edit]

Kandersteg was attacked early in 3070 during the next Jade Falcon Incursion. Elements of the Com Guard 208th Division fared poorly against the Clan warriors, with contradictory reports claiming that the Com Guard troops were either being driven off-world or attempting to deny the Falcons landing zones across the planet.[37]

Dark Age[edit]

During the post-Jihad years, Kandersteg became a military hub for the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces, Clan Wolf-in-Exile, and increasing mercenary forces. The fall of Arc-Royal to the Jade Falcons in 3146 significantly increased the numbers of the latter within Kandersteg's informal hiring hall.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Like its sister planet, Kandersteg IV was intended to be one of three habitable worlds in its system. While Star League era terraforming efforts increased the oxygen level a little, the project was ultimately a failure.[1]
