The League-class destroyer was the first WarShip to be designed and built domestically by the Free Worlds League and entered service in 2368. The League was constructed from components manufactured across the Free Worlds League, with final assembly taking place at the SelaSys Incorporated shipyards in the Loyalty system. Production continued into the Age of War. The dispersed nature of the League's construction attracted fears that the class would be a failure from the outset, but it instead proved to be a class of rugged, reliable WarShips.
These early WarShips would become the mainstay of the Free Worlds League's navy, where they were employed in various tasks from anti-piracy patrols to escorting the League's mighty Atreus-class battleships. The last of the original Leagues to be on active duty would be destroyed in battle with a McKenna-class battleship while leading a raid into the Capellan Confederation, although a number of hulls had been decommissioned and would remain in mothballs.
In the last century of the Star League era, the militaries of all the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere grew as the Star League became unstable. A second batch of Leagues entered production to help shore up the Free Worlds League's navy and to satisfy Captain-General Ewan Marik's egotistical need for modern WarShips, and this new production block - identified as Block II - featured improved weaponry and enhanced capabilities. Those Block I Leagues to have been decommissioned were also recommissioned during this time frame and upgraded to the new Block II standard. The more advanced technology in the Block II Leagues created problems, however; the ship lacked the power to operate all of the Naval Gauss weapons mounted on them without creating energy shortages, and maintaining the advanced technology required overhauls in the small number of shipyards that could actively support them.
Weapons and Capacities
When introduced, the League design had a balance of then-new technologies which allowed it to persevere past the space primitive technology era. Holdouts from the earlier era of space travel included the presence of a pair of DropShuttle Bays, allowing earlier and smaller DropShuttles to dock with a League. Fortunately, engineers were also able to include newer innovations such as a DropShip collar and presence of a Fighter Bay which enhanced the protection of the ship itself and the craft it carried.
The League carried a balance of capital weaponry for long-range and close-in combat. The main armament of the League included a number of Naval Autocannons and long-reach Naval Lasers. The ship's bow housed a pair Class-20 Naval Autocannons and an array of Large Lasers and Small Lasers for conventional and point defense. Each of the ship's forward and aft sides mounted single Class-10 Naval Autocannon and bundled Naval Laser 45s and 35s for WarShip threats, while six small lasers filled the point defense role. The League's broadside carried a single large Class-40 Naval Autocannon, four Large Lasers and six Small Lasers. The ship's aft was armed with paired up Class-10 and 20 Naval Autocannons with another four Large and six Small Lasers.

- Block II
- Produced at the end of the Star League Era from 2768 onward, the Block II was an updated version of the original design. Perhaps the most noticeable difference between the earlier Block I and the Block II was its main batteries; the Naval Autocannons were exchanged for Naval Gauss Rifles, with a pair of Medium Class Naval Gauss Rifles mounted in place of NAC/20s in the bow and single rifle in the in Aft. The broadside autocannons are exchanged for a single Heavy Class Naval Gauss Rifle. The forward and aft side-arc autocannons were swapped out for a Light Class Naval Gauss Rifle. Other improvements included exchanging the ship's standard armor for the same tonnage of Improved Ferro-Aluminum Armor, and the DropShuttle Bays were removed to additional room for the new weapons and to allow the League to carry 57 marines and ab additional DropShip Collar.
