Planetary History[edit]

Lyons was settled early in humanity's expansion across the stars. It featured a warm climate and arable land that readily supported crops imported from Terra. Lyons greatest claim to fame was the large number of volcanoes and volcanic activity that rocked the surface periodically. To avoid the problems presented by volcanoes, the inhabitants originally settled on the edges of the Fedkirk continent, leaving the center of the continent largely abandoned. The other continents (Glastone, Leuben, and Pairse) were settled the same way. Shortly after the immigrants arrived, the local mining industry produced enough for other industries to function. This let Lyons achieve self-sufficiency in short order.[1]

Early History[edit]

Lyons was one of the worlds that was abandoned by the Terran Alliance following the Outer Reaches Rebellion and the Demarcation Declaration of 2242.[2] Having become independent as a result of the Demarcation Declaration, Lyons was subsequently added to the resurgent Terran Hegemony; whilst some worlds joined the Hegemony during its early years as a result of diplomatic and trade incentives, many more were conquered in "campaigns of persuasion" launched by Director-General James McKenna, the first of which began in 2316 and ended with the capture of Towne in 2317. Lyons was one of the worlds added to the Hegemony during or around the time of this first military campaign.[45][2][46] By the end of the Reunification War Lyons had become one of the worlds within the Lone Star Province of the Terran Hegemony.[6]

Amaris Civil War[edit]

In 2772, the Star League Defense Force's Sixteenth Army was assigned to retake Lyons from the Amaris Empire during Operation CHIEFTAIN. Defended by a combination of Patriot forces and the Twenty-fifth Amaris Dragoons, the SLDF would encounter horrific conditions that would typify the kind of resistance faced all across the Terran Hegemony. The Dragoons used chemical and biological weapons against the Sixteenth Army without compunction, in the process affecting over a hundred thousand civilians living in three of the world's largest cities. The Patriot battalions swelled their ranks by rounding up and forcing thousands of civilians to man defensive turrets and barricades, under the threat of torture or death if they refused. SLDF troops had to exercise extreme care and use non-lethal weapons where possible, and the siege on the planet's lone Castle Brian lasted more than two months.[47]

Succession Wars[edit]

In 2966, the Draconis Combine conducted a raid on Lyons. However, a Lyran aerospace force was hidden on Lyon's moon, Bier. Once the Kuritan forces were committed, the Steiner forces dove through the attacking force causing tremendous damage and chaos. Only one Kuritan ship escaped the attack.[48]

In 3025, Lyons was the primary base for the Twelfth Star Guards, though they had moved off-world during the Fourth Succession War. In 3029, the Kell Hounds mercenary unit established a base there, including the town of New Freedom. The town was home to numerous members of the underground Heimdall movement. The town was destroyed in a raid by the Third Dieron Regulars and most of the population was murdered by the Kuritan unit. The Kell Hounds returned to New Freedom and completely routed the Kurita forces, returning the planet to relative peace.[citation needed]

Jihad[edit]

Lyons was captured by the Word of Blake during the Jihad. In September 3076, however, a Clan Ghost Bear/Clan Snow Raven task force liberated the world,[49][50] with the Ghost Bear's Xi Galaxy conducting the ground campaign.[51] The Clan troops in November, left shortly after liberating the world, leaving two Inner Sphere units to help rebuild.[50][52]

Unfortunately tensions between the Sixth Pesht Regulars and Seventh Donegal Guards boiled over, and the traditional enemies fought with each other, inflicting damage on both units. Eventually General Belle Lee arrived on the world and transferred both the House units off-world. The Thirty-first Battalion of the Com Guard Sixth Army was transferred in to replace them.[50][52][53]

The clashes between the Seventh Donegal Guards and Sixth Pesht Regulars began with the Donegal Guards launching an air raid followed by an airborne infantry assault on the primary base used by the Pesht Regulars on 12 December 3076; the bulk of the Pesht Regulars were conducting war games on the Alterland continent, and the Donegal Guards' forces took less than an hour to capture the facility. The Pesht Regulars retaliated the next day, assaulting the Donegal Guards forces at the Federated-Boeing International DropPort, the beginning of a series of skirmishes throughout the day. Ernestine Chiery, an aide to Governor Michael Bloomsworth, confirmed later the same day that the planetary authorities had requested assistance from the allied coalition command to try and defuse the situation even as they evacuated civilians from the affected areas. General Lee and her forces arrived in early January, and by the 5th of January had stopped the fratricidal combat, removed both units from their posts and replaced them with the Com Guard forces.[53]

Dark Age[edit]

Following the Jihad Lyons became part of the new Republic of the Sphere when that state arose in 3081.[35]

A false-flag operation run by the RAF was used to deal with a Republic-loyal militia that in actuality was run by a separatist faction.[54]

Following the raising of Fortress Republic in October 3135 Lyons was cut off from the Republic government. Lyons quickly tried to shore up their defenses with mercenaries, with mixed results. The infamous Lyons Incident in August 3136 did little to lessen the world's resolve. Despite their efforts, their independence was lost when the world fell to Clan Jade Falcon in September 3145.[37][38][40]

Lyons was one of the target worlds when the Republic mounted Operation SHOFAR. In January 3149 the Third Falcon Velites garrisoning Lyons were surprised by the arrival of a new RAF unit, the Eleventh Hastati Sentinels. After three days of resistance the Velites evacuated Lyons to inform Khan Malvina Hazen of the Republic's reemergence on the galactic scene.[41]

In November 3150, Lyons was taken once more by the Jade Falcons during their final drive towards Terra. Using scorched-earth tactics, the Falcons drew the Republic defenders into making headstrong attacks, which the Clan warriors exploited to defeat them.[42]
