Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

Originally settled by the Taurian Concordat, Mendham became the target of aggression from the Capellan Confederation, which was expanding in search of additional planets. Despite being Taurian colonies, Mendham and several other worlds were targeted by Chancellor Kurnath Liao, who resolved to push the Taurians out of "Capellan holdings." The resulting military campaign ran from 2397 to 2422, began with clashes between the Capellan and Taurian navies and ended with the capture of three Taurian worlds, including Mendham. In contrast with the sporadic raids inflicted on Taurian worlds by the Federated Suns, the Capellan attacks were staged with a degree of savagery the Concordat hadn't encountered before; cruelty to prisoners and the outright massacre of Taurian civilians were commonplace events.[2]

Second Succession War[edit]

In mid-2828 Capellan Confederation Armed Forces units attacked Mendham, with the First Centauri Guards and Sixth St. Ives Lancers surprising both the Fourteenth Syrtis Fusiliers and the other major defending unit, the Twenty-sixth Avalon Hussars. Despite their initial surprise at the attack, which was part of Operation CELT — an offensive aimed at recapturing Chesterton — the two AFFS units fought back hard, making a number of attempts to crush the CCAF landing zone at Munnings. Although the two AFFS regiments couldn't overwhelm the entrenched forces in the landing zone, they did prevent the Guards and Sentinels from breaking out, and all four units were battered by the time the CCAF units withdrew in late June.[39]

The Jihad[edit]

In 3068 Duke George Hasek launched an invasion of the Capellan Confederation under the name Operation SOVEREIGN JUSTICE, ostensibly to liberate the worlds of the St. Ives Compact.[40] The CCAF responded with Operation THUNDERSTRIKE, which not only liberated the worlds seized by the Capellan March forces but which also struck back at worlds in the Federated Suns. Mendham was one of the worlds hit, with CCAF troops attacking on the 18th of February 3069 as part of a wave of attacks that hit eight separate systems on the same day.[41]

Mendham was conquered by the Taurian Concordat in February 3075.[32][33] The conquest of Mendham was one of a number of attacks made by the Taurian Concordat following the discovery of evidence implicating the Federated Suns as being responsible for the asteroid bombardment that destroyed the city of Samantha on Taurus in 3074.[33][42]

The Dark Age[edit]

In 3090 the Fourth Ceti Hussars LCT were stationed on Mendham when the Taurian Concordat raided the world. What the Concordat forces were unprepared for was the presence of a number of new Fulcrum hovertanks, which the Hussars had been issued just a few weeks beforehand; these new Fulcrum Hybrids were able to use their superior armor, Clantech weapons and Superchargers to take advantage of a feint and punch through the Taurian lines. The four Hybrids spent three days disrupting Taurian operations by hitting supply points, disrupting unit movements and even making an opportunistic attack on a grounded DropShip, losing just one Hybrid in the process; the cumulative effects of the constant harassment in their rear areas prevented the Taurians from forming a new line of battle and forced them to retreat from Mendham.[43]

Errata[edit]

The House Davion (The Federated Suns) sourcebook gives the impression that the planet Mendham and Mendham Electronics were just captured from the Capellan Confederation in the waning years of the Third Succession War. However, the Handbook: House Davion sourcebook states that the planet was taken from the Confederation in the First Succession War and never given up. Perhaps the Capellans took possession of the planet for a short time during the Third Succession War before losing it again, but this has not been certified.
