Planetary Info[edit]

For many years New Capetown was one of the Lyran Commonwealth's uglier worlds. The climate and environment were quite lovely; the problem was with the initial settlers and the government they created. These colonists traced their ancestry to white South Afrikaners and were members of a distasteful sect of New Calvinists. Adhering to the same beliefs which made twentieth century South Africa one of the most repressive regimes in the history of Terra, the colonists established a government based on racist ideals that used skin color to determine social class. Its capital city, New Johannesburg, was sited on the southern continent of Pretoria. This government was able to find trading partners and export raw materials and commercial goods to other worlds, but their internal policies made them unpopular with the neighboring worlds, which translated into limited economic growth as these trading partners devoted more of their efforts to other, less-repressive Commonwealth worlds. Many Christian organizations were behind efforts to have the government of New Capetown formally declared a tyranny, a move which would've forced the Commonwealth government to step in and replace it.[1][37]

That New Capetown was also home to one of the Commonwealth's prestigious military schools, the Royal New Capetown Military Academy, was also a constant headache for the LCAF. Under Archon Katrina Steiner, two new commanders were appointed to stamp out any racialist philosophy from bleeding over into the cadet population, leading to a spate of terrorist attacks against the RNCMA.[38] This was just the first in a larger effort by the Archon to curb the planet's hateful influence, leading to a wider reform movement which would eventually result in a civil war breaking out in the early 3030s. By the middle of the decade the racist regime was overthrown and a new, egalitarian government was put in place, with the capital renamed to New Hope. The new government was largely successful in stamping out all racial bigotry on New Capetown, though a few pockets remained into the middle of the century.[1]

A closer examination of New Capetown's population though would find that much of its former hatred never really disappeared, but was transferred to other targets: the political divisions which racked the newly-formed Federated Commonwealth (and would eventually lead to more civil war), and the Clans after their invasion of the Inner Sphere. The planet's anti-Clan sentiments in particular were seen as more justified by its neighbors and so did not engender the same type of response as previous prejudices.[39]

The Jihad had little effect on New Capetown as the world had few industries, though various raids by the Clans during that time did inflame the inhabitant's hatred of all things Clan.[2]

Sometime between 3142 and 3145 New Capetown fell to Clan Jade Falcon.[40] Following the disintegration of the Falcon Occupation Zone in 3151 New Capetown became an independent world.[3]
