Vessel Profile
TypeIceship

Paradise-Hope was the name given to a so-called Iceship—essentially a spaceborne slab of ice with thrust engines attached and a control center—that was moved across the Liezen system (in the Free Rasalhague Republic) in 3047.

History[edit]

Liezen, a "tiny, water-poor" world[1] of six million inhabitants was to receive 15 billion tons of water in the form of a free-floating iceberg that had been found in the system. The Hydrodynamics Corporation, who imported all of Liezen's water at the time, expressed concerns that the iceberg could break up in the planet's atmosphere and cause widespread death and destruction.[2]

An iceship, dubbed Paradise-Hope, was created by mounting "two of the largest thrust drives built since the Star League" on the iceberg. The Paradise-Hope was under the command of captain Tom Byron.

The Paradise-Hope moved to Liezen's L4 Lagrange point between March and August of 3047, where it was to be cut up and delivered to the planet's surface in smaller chunks. However, an unknown agency opposed the operation; while the Free Rasalhague Republic had hired mercenaries to protect the iceship, a large unidentified JumpShip had followed them into the Liezen system. The opposing mercenary forces attempted to destroy the Paradise-Hope's command center, which would leave the iceship unable to maneuver and invariably cause it to enter the sun's corona in approximately six months. To this end the attackers launched an (unsuccessful) attack by aerospace fighters on 7 April, followed by a more direct attack in early June using boarding harpoons deployed from their JumpShip in an attempt to drag the Paradise-Hope off-course. As it later turned out, BattleMechs had also been deployed against the Paradise-Hope, where they attempted to plant nuclear explosives among the iceberg's fissures and ice caves.

Canonicity[edit]

The Paradise-Hope featured solely in the MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries computer game. Computer games do not meet the current criteria for Canon, with the caveat that their storylines can be assumed to be part of the shared BattleTech universe within reason. Based on this premise, the game and by extension the Paradise-Hope are considered apocryphal.
