Talk:CBT Tables

Isn't this going too far?[edit]

Isn't this precariously close to providing copyrighted material outside "fair use"? I do not feel comfortable with this page, but shall leave it to the admins to decide wether or not it is okay. Frabby 03:39, 19 August 2008 (CDT)

I hear you, Frabby. In this case, this was an original page that existed either before the wiki or created with the wiki by Nic, who 'enjoys' a some-what special status within the BattleTech community at large (either because of the previous database nature of Sarna, his site's longevity or a connection through his MicroSoft career). I used this article as a reason to build the Update tag, but I too am not sure we should provide specific game mechanics either (at least while the providing source is still in print). I've considered opening a discussion about a moratorium policy, but think its best we wrap up our canon policy first. Also, I'd want Nic to be actively involved on any such discussion. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 08:26, 19 August 2008 (CDT)
<bump> - Revisiting this with admin hat on. I think this article needs to go. Opinions please. Frabby 19:00, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Agree. The tables seems problematic. --Neufeld 22:08, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
I agree, though I agree with Revanche's earlier assertion that Nic should be alerted because this was here before the wiki. --Scaletail 22:49, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
I think that it should be noted that TPTB have many of these tables as free downloads.-- 14:45, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
I am of the opinion that BTwiki should tend to be a source of info about the universe rather than the game mechanics.. that way it brings people to the game without weakening its position in the market rather than the other way around. Just my 2pence --Dmon 15:10, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
I must say IP has a very good point. Didn't think about that and have to check it, but this might be just right and a good excuse to keep this page. I'd like to stress that I don't have a problem with the page or content per se, just copyright concerns. But if it's already officially available for free download... Frabby 15:43, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Please keep it. The page is invaluable for quick reference during gameplay. It doesn't provide context or specific rules, it isn't a carbon copy of the book, but it's a FANTASTIC quick reference for new players trying to learn the numbers. It does have to be updated to TW numbers though (stuff like partial cover not being +3 and punch table anymore are very widespread errors in quickreference charts I've seen) Kobura 23:01, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes, all of these tables are available free for download from Catalyst as a player aid. The basic introductory rule set is also a free download. As such I feel both tables and basic rules have a legitimate purpose here. Also, unless anyone objects I am going to start breaking this page up into individual pages per relevant table with footnotes on where to find the source rule, previous versions and highlighted changes. I feel strongly that Sarna is a totally appropriate place for mechanics discussion provided that Sarna remains supplemental to the rules and tracks back to original material. Note the rules section in the Wikipedia article on "Monopoly". That article goes into reasonable detail but is not enough to play the game. Hasbro is well known for protecting their intellectual property but tolerates (by choice or not) that level of description on Wikipedia. Similarly, basic discussion of the rules along with appropriate references is appropriate here especially if such exposition is not only done to the letter of the law but with the intent of directing people to the original material. -- LRichardson 00:55, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

User Question[edit]

I recieved a question regarding the tables that I can't answer:

"The modifiers for Water, that the Mech in the Water is better to hit and has a aditional modifier for his weapon attacks.
I can't find this in my Total Warefare (early English version). Is there a errata or so?"

I think that they are wondering where the water modifier info came from, because they have an old version of the book. A page number would help. -BobTheZombie (talk) 12:21, 6 April 2014 (PDT)

The issue has been resolved. -BobTheZombie (talk) 15:36, 7 April 2014 (PDT)
