Talk:Federation of Skye

Isle of Sky[edit]

Okay - I just finished the Isle of Skye. It was by far the longest, most difficult original article I have written yet. It may also be the most controversial, as I would humbly submit that all linked references to the Federation of Skye, Free Skye and the various rebellions (at least three) should redirect to this one article. No doubt we'll have some discussion on that. Nevertheless, I was as thorough as possible. Please give it a look and give me your opinion when you have a chance. Thanks. • Great stuff. I agree with respect to the redirects. --Scaletail 18:43, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
  • Agree, very well written article now. I also agree that the redirects are validated. For conversational purposes, however, if someone where to expand upon the rebellions, they could very well merit their own articles. In which case, a direct link to this main article would be warranted in the sections you crafted. I still want to read the entire article and I'll be making some minor edits, mainly to the refs. Great job, Wolverine.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 19:29, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. My concern about the Skye Rebellions is this : With respect to the first two, there is incredibly little detail on the actual military units involved, where specific incidents took place, etc. What they DID publish, you can read here, because I can say without arrogance I used it all. With respect to the third rebellion, its been traditionally treated as a side-conflict of the FedCom Civil War. Personally, I'm hoping for another "Historical" sourcebook covering these issues. Maybe Era Report 3062 will have more on the second one. Who knows?
Also : Here's the big part - I want to merge this with the Federation of Skye article. Let's face it, when people say "Skye did this, Skye did that", they are talking about the Isle. The rest of the Federation was dragged along for the ride, including such worlds as Hesperus II and Solaris 7. At the same time, someone felt the Federation was deserving of its own article. So I could rename my "Isle of Skye" to "Federation of Skye", and merge the material on that one, but I wasn't sure if that would be prudent. ClanWolverine101 03:34, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
As all the maps (including the ones from most-recent-thus-trumps-previous Handbook: House Steiner) show, when the Isle was known formerly as the Isle it was as a part of the Federation, admittedly the most infamous part but still not the whole. Arguably the simplest solution is rename the the article Federation/March/Province, one of the overreaching names which would cover the Isle as well as the Rahnshire and Virginia Shire. Cyc - Well, I'm not putting "/" slashes in my title names, though I will set up redirects. (Which I've already done - "Skye March" and "Skye Province" go to my article.) I think here is the problem - There was a long stretch of history where, when people talked about what "Skye" was doing, they were talking about the "Federation of Skye". Sometime in the 31st century, that changed. When people talked about what "Skye" was doing, they were talking about the "Isle of Skye", where traditional Skye loyalties seemed to hold precedence. From what I can tell, it doesn't seem like people from the other two Shires ever particularly wanted to secede, though certainly, Skye tried to push them along (see Glengarry during the 2nd Rebellion and Hesperus during the 3rd). Frankly, the old Federation had ceased to exist as a formal geo-political identity. People from Hesperus or wherever did not tell people "I'm from the Federation of Skye.", they might say "I'm from Hesperus II, which is in X theater of Y march." People from Summer, however, would boast "I'M from the Isle of Skye, from the planet Summer." So the nature of these labels changed, I think. Does this explain why I did this the way I did? ClanWolverine101 15:17, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry if unclear, I never mean to suggest literally changing to Federation/March/Province, just using that as short-hand to cover my desire to select one of those. Ultimately I'm not against keeping this named the Isle of Skye, but still feel either the Federation of Skye or Skye Province are still better options for as you say" people would say "I'm from Hesperus II, which is the Freedom Theatre of Slye Province" in the Jihad era present. Cyc 21:08, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Ah - that makes more sense. Yes, I was hoping people would be comfortable with my changing the name. (Effectively deleting the other article.) ClanWolverine101 05:06, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I've made my edits. A lot more copyedits than just simple stylistic changes. Overall, I have to say I'm very impressed with your style of writing. Where I have a tendancy to want to write about every possible fact (in my first draft) coming from what ever source I'm leaning on at the moment, you're very apt at targeting the point of that particular paragraph and addressing only the generalities that aren't germaine to that target. Hope you're ok with my edits.
You might also want to note what I did with the references. Primarily removing spaces between the end of the sentence and the ref and adding commos between the 'sections' of the ref.
Lastly, I think Federation of Skye can get the 'ol heave-ho and formally re-direct to this article, per your discussion with Cyc above. Again, great work, CW.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 21:55, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Yeah, I've tried to "summarize" as much as possible. After all, any one battle between Skye/FWL during the Jihad isn't that important when the article is as broad as this. I made an exception for Hesperus II, partly because more material was available, but mostly because it was such a critical battle in the third rebellion, and in the FCCW in general.
Regarding the space before the reference citation... yeah, that's a personal thing that I stick on all my articles. Its just easier for me to read the text that way. But I understand your position and the policy on that.
Thanks again. I'll go ahead and zap the Federation article tomorrow. ClanWolverine101 05:06, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
  • CW, this is a great article. I think it can easily replace the Federation of Skye article.--Mbear 17:19, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
  • CW, my 'space' issue isn't policy. In hindsight, its my personal style. Spaces should be free. ;-) --Revanche (talk|contribs) 01:52, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Rev - Thanks for all your help. And thanks to everyone for the kind comments. ClanWolverine101 03:44, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
