Ambiguity about several units in the same sentence

The following text is ambiguous, partially due to two different units in the same sentence being called “the Fourth”.

“Both regiments managed to push the Fourth MAC off the planet in May, but not before former elite regiment left the Fourth combat ineffective due to damage inflicted to it.”

Question 1: which regiment was left combat ineffective, the fourth Mac or the fourth hastati sentinels? Please clarify.

Question 2: which regiment is the “former elite regiment”? There are technically three candidates for this “former elite regiment”, the x hastati sentinels, the fourth Mac or the fourth hastati sentinels. Which of the three regiments is it? Please clarify.
