The Zavijava system is home to at least one habitable world, Zavijava III, and as of June 3152 was located in the Wolf Empire.[2]

System Description[edit]

The Zavijava system lies near the Denebola and Oliver systems[3][4] and consists of a class M3V primary orbited by six planets, at least one of which is habitable.[1]

System History[edit]

The Zavijava system was colonized during the First Exodus from Terra.[5]

Zavijava III - more commonly referred to simply as Zavijava - is the third planet in the Zavijava system and has a single moon, named Haldana.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

When it was first colonized, Zavijava was a largely unremarkable terrestrial world.[1] Having become independent as a result of the Demarcation Declaration, Zavijava was subsequently added to the resurgent Terran Hegemony; whilst some worlds joined the Hegemony during its early years as a result of diplomatic and trade incentives, many more were conquered in "campaigns of persuasion" launched by Director-General James McKenna, the first of which began in 2316 and ended with the capture of Towne in 2317. Zavijava was one of the worlds added to the Hegemony during or around the time of this first military campaign.[55][5][56]

Star League Era[edit]

Zavijava remained unremarkable for several centuries, but in the twenty-fifth century that began to change. Volcanic eruptions began on the planet, increasing in frequency as time passed. The volcanoes spewed sulfur gases and particulates into the atmosphere in large quantities, and even at the height of the Star League experts from the Terran Hegemony were unable to identify the cause of the increasingly violent and frequent eruptions or find a way to prevent them.[1]

The population of the planet began to decline as conditions on the world deteriorated, dropping steadily from its peak of some three billion people; over the next six centuries most of the native animal life was driven to extinction, with temperatures dropping 10° because of the adverse climate — resembling a "nuclear winter" — caused by the huge quantities of ash in the atmosphere. Mining interests continued to operate on the planet, and hearty souls continued to live there, even though breathing the air became difficult without breather masks.[1]

Amaris Civil War[edit]

In January 2775, Stefan Amaris redeployed large numbers of Amaris Empire Armed Forces to a dozen worlds, including Zavijava. AEAF units had used weapons of mass destruction regularly against Star League Defense Force units throughout the Hegemony Campaign, predominantly to either damage the SLDF units targeted or to strike at civilian targets to prevent the SLDF from obtaining resources and supplies. In this case, Amaris' orders were different: he intended to create scorched wastelands that Commanding General Aleksandr Kerensky would have no choice but to try and clear, whilst saddling the SLDF with huge numbers of sick and starving civilians. The AEAF units deployed to Zavijava and the other eleven worlds due to be abandoned by Amaris launched large-scale WMD attacks with one purpose: to ravage the worlds, preventing them from sustaining either their human populations or their various industries... to create wastelands.[20]

The AEAF tactic was both brutal and brutally effective. Kerensky deployed twelve corps of SLDF personnel into Amaris Empire space, and each discovered the same horrific situations. Forced to deploy the SLDF reserve into action, by February Kerensky had almost a hundred SLDF divisions either on the twelve ravaged worlds or en route to them, trying to provide aid to the populations and to clear up what damage they could.[20] Zavijava fell within the operating area of Task Force Commonwealth, and the Second Army Group deployed to try and assist the population.[57] The devastation wreaked across Zavijava and the other worlds bought Amaris time; for several months Kerensky was unable to resume offensive operations because of a lack of resources, and ultimately the Commanding General had no choice but to call on the Capellan Confederation, Lyran Commonwealth and Federated Suns to provide relief where they could.[20]

Succession Wars[edit]

The Succession Wars weren't kind to the planet or its inhabitants, though; Zavijava was located on the shifting border between the Lyran Commonwealth and the Free Worlds League, resulting in it being subject to various raids and military campaigns.[1]

The Jihad[edit]

The Jihad was no kinder, with Zavijava becoming a battleground once more as the Skye Province of the Lyran Alliance attacked the Free Worlds League. At the height of the war between Skye and the League Zavijava was attacked by League forces, who struck at the planetary spaceport. The spaceport was located near the planetary capital, Tzion, on the southern continent of Velvel. The capital was devastated in the fighting and more than five thousand people were killed. When Zavijava was subsequently incorporated into the Republic of the Sphere it received no reconstruction assistance because of the steady exodus of the population off-world and the ongoing natural crisis.[1]

The ruins of Tzion were cleared away during the Dark Age and the city of Noé on the northern continent of Peninah was designated as the new administrative capital of Zavijava. A new spaceport was constructed near Noé, and where the ruins of Tzion had stood a monument was erected in memory of those who fell during the Jihad.[1]

Dark Age[edit]

In 3142, a small group of malcontents seized a near-empty armory near the city of Haliwell. They took hostages and demanded the government reverse changes the Republic made under the Fortress protocols. The only available military unit, a squad of Quirinus equipped troopers, tried negotiating with the malcontents. However, when one of the hostages was killed, the soldiers stormed the armory. Many malcontents were killed, but there were no further losses among the hostages.[58]
