The First Bear Guards were an elite unit of the Ghost Bear touman.[1]

History[edit]

During the Battle of Tokasha in 2921 Elementals from the Guards fought their Hell's Horses counterparts in the Weißenborn Morass, with individual Stars fighting their own semiprivate battles in murky undergrowth.[2] Later the Guards' 312th Assault Trinary managed to break through to MechWorks Alpha but were forced to withdraw by Hell's Horses reinforcements.[3]

During the preparations for Operation REVIVAL, the First Bear Guards were one of the units that faced Ulric Kerensky and Clan Wolf in their Trial of Refusal. During that Trial, both Ghost Bear Khans were killed.[4][5] During the Trials for Operation REVIVAL, the First was commanded temporarily by Khan Nornian Tseng and saKhan Ursula Jorgensson. Both Khans were killed by Ulric Kerensky.[4]

Operation REVIVAL[edit]

Throughout the Clan Invasion the First Bear Guards were able to successfully defeat even the most dug-in Inner Sphere forces, with the First utilizing a combination of air power and fast-hitting ground forces to hammer their opponents.[6] The First Bear Guards fought on the following worlds during the invasion of the Inner Sphere:

Wave Two[edit]

Jarett

Wave Three[edit]

Last Frontier (FRR) June 3050 - Fought the First Freemen. SaKhan Theresa DelVillar was injured and fell into a coma.[1]

Wave Four[edit]

Goito (FRR) October 3050
Jezersko (FRR) September 3050

Wave Five[edit]

Alshain (DC) December 3051 - The entire Alpha Galaxy attacked this world, with The Rage facing the Sixth Alshain Regulars. Unable to break the Regulars lines, the First Bear Guards called on the Fiftieth Striker Cluster for assistance. The two units were able to break the Regular's lines, but the Regulars were able to escape with the help of the Second Sword of Light.[1]
Rubigen (DC) April 3052
Sternwerde (DC) January 3052

Tukayyid[edit]

Fought the 308th Com Guard Division on the advance to Spanac.

Post-Tukayyid[edit]

The First were devastated during the battle on Tukayyid and had to be rebuilt; the First's return to Spheroid space was announced with their capture of Santander's World in July 3052 from the defending Smoke Jaguars.[6]

First Draconis Combine/Ghost Bear War[edit]

The First Draconis Combine / Ghost Bear War erupted following an attack on Alshain by rogue elements of the Alshain Avengers brigade of the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery in 3062,[7] and as expected Alpha Galaxy played a prominent part in the Ghost Bear's retaliation against the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery.[8] The First Bear Guards struck at Idlewind while the Third Bear Guards attacked Garstedt.[9]

The Dark Age[edit]

Posted to Alshain after the Jihad, the First Bear Guards were able to rebuild rapidly and to re-equip from factories producing the best new equipment available; the First had been reduced to just thirty percent of full strength by 3079,[10] but by 3085 had almost doubled in strength.[11]

The First Bear Guards continued to serve as a part of Alpha Galaxy throughout the Dark Age. Alpha Galaxy continued to serve as the lead Galaxy for the Rasalhague Dominion, and as such spent a considerable amount of time protecting Alshain, the cultural heart of Clan Ghost Bear. Given that Khan Dalia Bekker regarded the Republic of the Sphere with reverence it was a foregone conclusion that Alpha Galaxy would be sent to secure the worlds of Alrakis and Konstance as the Inner Sphere began to erupt into widespread warfare again. Having deployed in 3135, Alpha Galaxy only remained in place until Omega Galaxy secured Vega.[12]

Although Alpha Galaxy wasn't around for subsequent events leading up to the formation of the Vega Protectorate, many in Alpha came to feel that steps should have been taken to prevent Omega Galaxy from "going native" at the time, and given Khan Bekkar's conservative views there was a building sense of expectation that Alpha would be called on to remove Omega's taint.[12]

Notes[edit]

  • At the time of the REVIVAL Trials, the First Bear Guards had created a massive Great Work at their Arcadia enclave. The marble cenotaph showed a history of the Cluster's successes, each of which was carved into the pillars by the participating warriors. The warriors then carved their name underneath the scene they carved. As the pillar ran out of room, another blank pillar was added to the Great Work.[4]
