Nickname The Belgium Fusiliers[1]
Affiliation Star League
Parent Command XVIII Corps

The 256th Mechanized Infantry Division was a part of the Star League Defense Force Regular Army.

History[edit]

The unit was created by reorganizing the Sixty-fifth SLDF Brigade into a full infantry division. It was first called the "Dutch and Belgian Fusiliers", but that name was shortened as most of the soldiers within the unit hailed from outside the Hegemony.[1]

By the final years of the Star League, amphibious operations were a specialty of the 256th, thus making them ideal troops to deploy on water-rich worlds.[1]

In 2764, the unit was assigned, as part of XVIII Corps, Seventeenth Army, to the Periphery Military Region.[2] The 256th was destroyed during the Periphery Uprising in 2765.[2]

The mechanized infantry divisions of the Star League were used offensively to exploit gaps in the enemy front created by the BattleMech divisions. They also bore the brunt of defensive actions.

Composition History[edit]

The division comprised two brigades of mechanized infantry and a single BattleMech brigade. Also attached was a ground aero wing.[3]
