History

Formation

The Capellan Reserve Cavalry formed during the years between the repeal of the Star League Council Edict of 2650 in 2572 and the eruption of the Amaris Coup. The Capellan Confederation Armed Forces had expanded rapidly, as did the militaries of the other Great Houses, and the Capellan Reserve Cavalry was the last of the CCAF brigades to form (or re-form) prior to the Coup. Between 2572 and 2765 the Reserve Cavalry mustered seven new regiments, with the intention that the Reserve Cavalry would act as rapid reinforcements to other units and as a source of replacement personnel for frontline commands. Like the other regiments within the Reserve Cavalry, the Second was an odd combination of volunteer corps, training cadre and militia, with standing orders for the junior Colonel in charge of the Second to subordinate his command to place it at the full disposal of any frontline command it served alongside. This allowed the Second to act as a synergistic part of the superior formation, free of internal power-struggles or conflicts.[1]

Third Succession War

In 3025 the Second was stationed in defense of the planet Palos.[2] It was one of the two Reserve Cavalry regiments to survive the Fourth Succession War.[3]

It can be assumed that the unit spent most of the war in defensive rotation among several worlds as did their sister units.[3]

They did fight in defense of Palos in the Sixth Wave[4] and then saw action during the Xin Sheng Campaign and the Jihad.

Fourth Succession War

In the Sixth Wave of the Fourth Succession War the Gamma and Delta Regiments of the Twelfth Vegan Rangers made a difficult landing on Palos and were ambushed at the approaches of the capital Xer by the Second.[4]. The next day the Rangers advanced on the city and met a combined force of infantry, tanks, and 'Mechs at battalion strength from the Second Reserve. The defenders overextended themselves and, when they refused to surrender, were destroyed. This defeat forced the rest of the Second Reserve from the planet.[4]

The other two battalions survived the war and spent the next twenty years on the Confederation-Compact border launching occasional raids.[5].

Xin Sheng Campaign

During the Capellan-St. Ives War 3060 to 3063 the unit recaptured Ambergrist in conjunction with the Hustaing Warriors. They had several other operations in the war before taking garrison duty on Denbar.[5]

FedCom Civil War

During the FedCom Civil War the Second Reserve first rotated to Purvo and then after that to their home world of Necromo in anticipation of action spilling over the border. On at least two occasions the Second Reserve prepared for an assault, alerted by troop movements in Commonwealth space, but neither incident resulted in conflict.[6]

The Jihad

In early 3067 the Feng Huang-class cruiser Ilsa Hyung was nearly destroyed by sabotage. As a result, the Second Reserve requested a year on Necromo to see the Ilsa Hyung through her second attempt at launch.[6] The Second was still on Necromo when the planet was attacked by the Word of Blake in November 3068; the Second fought to the last man against the Blakist-employed mercenary unit Khorsakov's Kossacks, but was unable to prevent the shipyards being destroyed.[7]

Officers

As of 3050 the unit was commanded by Colonel Daniel Lovitt.[8]

As of 3054 the commanding officer was Colonel Katherine Schmidt.[9]

As of 3063 to 3067 the commanding officer was Sang-shao Mai Tee Phyn.[5][10]

Tactics

Star League Era

The Second served the Confederation as skirmishers, and many of the light BattleMechs within the Second had been modified to carry LRMs.[1]

Succession Wars

Recently the 2nd Reserve has taken a more flippant attitude to combat possibly because of their actions with the notoriously undisciplined Hustaing Warriors.[5]

The unit was plagued for many years by equipment failures to communication and targeting systems and has trained extensively without such gear. This training gives the unit excellent gunnery skills even when fighting with limited visibility.[5]
