History

Formation

The Second Free Worlds Legionnaires was built in 3043. A large portion of the unit came from applicants who wanted to be a part of the Legionnaires after the impassioned defense of Suzano by the First Free Worlds Legionnaires, though the core of the unit came from veterans of the Defenders of Andurien. [1]

The unit's first deployment was to Al Jubaylah. There, they assisted in restoring order after a popular religious leader was assassinated. Though they only faced two regiments of infantry and a mercenary BattleMech company under the command of a rebel general, the Second acquitted itself well. Casualties were light, even after storming a pair of fortifications.[1]

After that campaign, they were rotated to Sadurni to assist in the defense of the Duchy of Andurien. They took on pirate hunting duties, which included destroying the band known as the Magnates. [1] They were still based on Sadurni as of 3050.[2]

Jihad

In 3072 the Second Legion redeployed to Atreus to fight the remains of the 2nd Knights of the Inner Sphere. Though they had received a great deal of upgrades and new equipment, the Knights eluded them for several years. Eventually, however, the 2nd and 8th Legion destroyed the few surviving Knights of the Inner Sphere. [3] Shortly thereafter, the 2nd and 8th Legions unleashed years of pent-up fury on the Word of Blake's 30th Division, destroying the unit completely on Atreus. [4]

After the fall of the Free Worlds League the Second Legion pledged to follow Thomas Halas to the Marik Commonwealth. They remain one of the small realm's most skilled military units. They took up station on Keystone.[5]

The Stygians spent most of the Jihad guarding Corinne Marik. After that they garrisoned Marik for several years, but their strength allowed the Army of the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth commanders to redeploy the Stygians to New Olympia. There they garrisoned the world and took part in the clean-up of radioactive materials and the restoration of the capital city's power grid. This didn't take long, and the Second Legion is still in place in order to deter raids by the Principality of Regulus.[6]

Dark Age

After Clan Wolf's invasion of the Free Worlds League, many commands were heavily damaged. The survivors of these units joined the Second Free Worlds Legionnaires on New Olympia.[7]

Officers

As of 3050 to 3054 the commanding officer was General Alicia Denichuk. [2][8] As of 3059, Denichuk was still in command. As she was the commanding officer at the unit's formation, she was the only commanded the unit had known up until this point.[1]

Force Commander Corinne Marik, the niece of Captain-General Thomas Marik, was the Executive Officer of the 'Mech Regiment for a large portion of the unit's history.[1]

As of 3067 the commanding officer was General Alice Denichuk.[9]

As of 3085 the commanding officer is General William Childs.[10]

Tactics

The Stygians are best when they use their large artillery and engineering formations to wreak havoc on enemy fortifications.[1]
