2nd Victoria Rangers

Sung's Rangers
Second Victoria Rangers
Nickname Sung's Rangers;[1] Confederation's Reach
Affiliation Capellan Confederation
Parent Command Victoria Rangers

Originally called Sung's Cuirassiers and a part of the Chesterton Reserves, the regiment has the distinction being one of the few Capellan Regiments to be destroyed and rebuilt stronger than it was originally.[2] The regiment was renamed Sung's Victoria Commonality Rangers following its reassignment to the Victoria Commonality Rangers brigade. After the Capellan Crusades, several CCAF brigades were reorganized and the current name was adopted.[3]

The unit is usually a medium/heavy BattleMech regiment.[2] They are a second-line regiment of the Victoria Commonality.[4]

History[edit]

Star League Era[edit]

In 2668, the unit was sent on a raid against the House Marik world of Xanthe III. The target was supposed to be a lightly defended repair depot. Yet due to intelligence failures of the Maskirovka agents in field, the Cuirassiers encountered elements of the Marik Protectorate Guard. The unit's drop zones were overwhelmed with a large number of heavy and assault BattleMechs. Only two companies of the Cuirassiers survived the failed raid.[2]

During 2761, the unit was re-formed. The Cuirassiers were used in the occupation of the world of Lee where they faced off with House Davion's Syrtis Fusiliers. The Cuirassiers were successful in the use of their Jump Troops to inflict moderate damage against the Davion troops.[2]

Third Succession War[edit]

Between 2890 and 2910, the unit was used in a series of clashes with House Kurita.[2]

While conducting a raid against the Davion world of Bristol in 2915, the unit overshot their designated drop zones. These errors caused numerous personal and equipment losses which led to its near destruction yet again. Only a few companies managed to rally, but where they quickly contained by Bristol's Militia.[2]

They were rebuilt yet again in 2978 and successfully seized the world of Mesartim from House Davion.[2]

In 2999, the unit was overwhelmed on Ingersoll by Marik aerospace fighters.[2]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

In 3029, the entire regiment is stationed on Wei when House Davion invaded the world, dropping multiple regiments on the unit's positions.[5] The 12th Vegan Rangers were assigned to take the world by the AFFS. During this assault, the Cuirassiers used chemical weapons several times. After losing two battalions, the unit was forced to abandon Wei.[6]

Andurien/Canopus Invasion[edit]

Reduced to two battalions during the Fourth Succession War, the Cuirassiers were rebuilt and garrisoned Gei-Fu and Harloc during the Andurien Wars.[7]

Xin Sheng Campaign[edit]

In 3061, Sung's Victoria Commonality Rangers were part of a task force commanded by Naomi Centrella. Arriving on Detroit, they fought Colonial Marshals loyal to President Sherman Maltin's rebellion. They were instrumental in rescuing Magestrix Emma Centrella but failed in doing so for Protector Jeffrey Calderon. They have remained in Detroit ever since.[8]

In 3065, the Rangers finished their assignment of defending Detroit and handed the responsibility to the forces of the Magistracy of Canopus. The unit was to return home to Victoria but was called into action with the emergence of a new pirate state. The Fronc Reaches began to threaten the Trinity Alliance. Pirate bands such as Calderon's Commando began raiding Taurian-controlled space. The Rangers fought a few skirmishes on the world of Hellespont and other locations. Having difficulties trying to narrow down the aims of the Commando, the Chancellor sent aid in form of his own Death Commandos. The Fronc Reaches government tired of the raiding as well and closed its borders, limiting the movement of the pirate bands. This allowed the Rangers to return to Victoria.[9]

As the Rangers returned home, the unit was forced to reorganize to cover both the Free Worlds League and Federated Suns borders. The unit was to split its presence between Victoria and Decatur. Since Marshigama's Legionnaires mauling, the Rangers were left to hold the borders on its own as of 3067.[9]

Jihad[edit]

The collapse of the Trinity Alliance in 3067 caused the two companies of Taurian Concordat MechWarriors in the Rangers to suffer from conflicted loyalties. Two lances worth of Taurian personnel left but the remainder chose to stay with the regiment throughout the Jihad. They were later awarded Capellan citizenship.[10]

In December 3068, a battle took place around the Shengli Arms factories on Victoria. Certain members of the mercenary regiment, Olson's Rangers, were subverted by the Federated Suns and mutinied. After murdering their more loyal comrades, the rogue mercenaries started attacking the very facilities they were paid to garrison. Sung's Victoria Commonality Rangers were also stationed on-planet and soon arrived to fight the traitors. After inflicting significant damage to the factories and before the Rangers breached the automated defenses, Olson's Rangers fled to their waiting DropShips. Sung's aerospace assets joined with the Victoria Home Guard's aerospace fighters and attempted to stop them from escaping, but they too met with failure.[11]

Sung's Rangers then broke up into battalion-sized groups and protected the Capellan-Periphery border for the rest of the Jihad. They successfully repelled several attacks by the Taurian Concordat as well as several pirate groups. They performed so well that the commander of the Victoria Commonality Rangers is considering petitioning for each battalion to form the core of a regimental battle group once Capellan factories are back online. Sung's Rangers remain separated into battalions, with one each on Ward, New Roland, and Renown.[12]

The Republic Era[edit]

In 3085, the main body of the Rangers was stationed on the world of Yuris,[13] but the Rangers' commanding officer, Sang-shao Jason Harris, was continually deploying battalions of the Rangers off-world on bandit-hunting missions.[10] During one of these deployments, the First Battalion on New Roland encountered what they believed to be pirate forces. Those pirates actually turned out to be Word of Blake forces attempting to use a chemical weapon against the city of Maine. The Ranger detachment - led by Zang-shao Steven Sung - ignored the damage the Blakists inflicted on them, moved to block the Blakist path to the city and destroyed the vehicle carrying the chemical weapon.[10]

During the Victoria War in 3103, the regiment left their garrison at Yuris and proceeded to reinforce their besieged capital, Victoria. Yuris later fell to the 3rd Ceti Hussars, the 2nd Victoria Rangers were among the first wave of CCAF reinforcements. They absorbed the newly arrived Yuris Home Guard and took to the hills outside the capital city of Barns after the 3rd Federated Suns Lancers blocked their entry.

The Fifth McCarron's Armored Cavalry arrived on the 20th of October and prepared to attack the Earthwerks factory outside the city of O'Hanlon. In support of this, both Rangers regiments were ordered to attack the besieging 3rd FedSuns Lancers. However, poor coordination allowed the Lancers to fight each Rangers regiment separately resulting in huge casualties to Sung's Rangers. The 3rd Federated Suns Lancers lost over two-thirds of their regiment as well and withdrew the next day to the Shengli Arms factory in Pictish. The Siege of Barns was thus lifted and counted as a win for the Capellans. The Fifth McCarron's Armored Cavalry later arrived after brutal combat destroyed the Earthwerks factory, adding another regiment to Barns' defense.

Warrior House Kamata arrived on November 6 to replace the leaving Fifth McCarron's Armored Cavalry. On the 15th of November, the newly arrived Syrtis Avengers and Third Ceti Hussars began their assault on the city. Despite the support of House Kamata and now operating a combined force of just under a regiment, Kingston's and Sung's VCR broke against the fresh Davion units. The city of Barns finally fell as its former defenders fled into the wilderness. The 15th of December saw the battered Victoria Commonality regiments inflict significant damage on the surprised Sixth Syrtis Fusiliers[14] to break through and rendezvous with the just arrived Fifth Capellan Defense Force who then evacuated them off-planet to Quimberton. Their battle for Victoria was over.[15]

In 3110, the regiment raided Sirdar and engaged the Sirdar CMM.[16]

The Dark Age[edit]

On 11 November 3144, the Second Victoria Rangers took part in Operation CELESTIAL REWARD. All five Victoria Rangers regiments landed on Victoria and rapidly drove the AFFS garrison off-planet. During this battle, the 2nd Victoria Rangers entered the city of Alexandrina and destroyed all Davion units that tried to escape the pursuing 1st Victoria Rangers. By December, the 2nd VR and her sister regiments had liberated all commonality worlds lost in the Victoria War.[1]

On 6 January 3145, the Dynasty Guard, 3rd McCarron's Armored Cavalry and 2nd Victoria Rangers defeated the Ridgebrook Capellan March Militia and Fifth Crucis Lancers on Taygeta.[17][18] Note: It is likely that the Ridgebrook Capellan March Militia and Mandaree Capellan March Militia LCT are the same unit.

By 31 December 3145, the unit was posted on Manapire.[19]

Officers[edit]

As part of a deal struck when the Cuirassiers still belonged to the Chesterton Reserves, the Sung family is entitled to hereditary command positions in the unit. However, regimental and battalion commands are still determined based on skill by the CCAF. Part of this bargain also insures that the unit only retains the "Sung" name as long as one member of the Sung line is serving. The Sung family also presents a new BattleMech to the commanding officer, whether they are related or not, every year.[20]

Rank Name Command

Tactics[edit]

This regiment's command lances are adept at drawing the fire of enemy forces, thus sparing other 2nd Victoria Ranger units from damage.[24]

Notes[edit]

In 3025, the unit insignia was an armored horseman on a white charger against a green and gold field.[2]

In 3063, the unit crest is a triskelion comprised of weapons set against a beige triangular field. The blades pointing to the upper corners are the Han dao and a Greek kopis, the lowest sword is a rapier. They represent the Capellan Confederation, the Magistracy of Canopus and the Taurian Concordat respectively. The regiment currently paints their BattleMechs and armor in rust-red and gray-black camouflage.[8]

The unit is known by three different names. As with Cuirassiers, it is later known as Sung's Rangers or Sung's Victoria Commonality Rangers (Sung's VCR).
