The Defenders of Andurien brigade formed in 2514, just two short years ahead of the start of the Fourth Andurien War between the Capellan Confederation and the Free Worlds League.[2] It is likely that the Fourth Defenders of Andurien were formed at the same time.
Although it was a new formation, the Defenders performed well in battle, but soon found hemselves in political hot water because of the Defenders loyalty to House Humphreys and the Duchy of Andurien, rather than to the Captain-General of the Free Worlds League. With the loss of Andurien to the Confederation as a result of the Treaty of Geneva in 2556 the Defenders adopted a position of civil disobedience towards the federal government that would persist for centuries.[2]

When the Marik Civil War erupted the Fourth Defenders chose to support Oliver Marik; their hope was that the usurper would allow the Defenders to go to war with the Confederation and recapture their homeworld, but those dreams vanished when Oliver was captured and executed. At the end of the Fourth Succession War, Captain-General Janos Marik established a hospital for CCAF wounded on Scarborough. Catherine Humphries arranged a bombing at this hospital in 3028. Other CCAF troops on world rose up, and the Fourth suppressed them.[4]
During the Andurien Secession the Fourth Defenders landed on Sigma Mare in April 3031. There they destroyed the 2nd Confederation Reserve Cavalry.[5] In 3032 they moved from Sigma Mare to Betelgeuse to assist the 1st Defenders of Andurien and Tooth of Ymir[6] against Warrior House Kamata[7], Warrior House Hiritsu[8], and the Prefectorate Guard.[6] The Andurien forces had destroyed the Prefectorate Guard and they were pressing the Warrior Houses when all five regiments of McCarron's Armored Cavalry dropped on Betelgeuse.
