The Fifth Regimental Combat Team was a Star League Defense Force formation that was part of the LXXI Corps.[1]

History[edit]
The Fifth formed a part of the Seventh Army, and in 2764 was stationed in District 3 of the Capellan Confederation Military Region but was moved to an undisclosed area of the Periphery to take part in the Periphery Uprising by 2765.[1]
In 2771, General DeChavilier ordered the 5th RCT along with all other surviving Regimental Combat Teams to start reconnaissance probes and raids into Amaris held world in the Hegemony as part of Operation INTRUDER. These raids continued for a year and saw a very heavy casualty rate. General Kerensky wished to rest the troops of Operation INTRUDER, but the will to fight was so strong that he assigned them as pathfinder units for the main invasion.[2]
At the start of Operation CHIEFTAIN in 2772, the Fifth RCT had been reduced to two regiments and formed part of the Seventeenth Army Group.[3]
Battle of New Home[edit]
New Home was assaulted in March 2775 the Fifth along with the First Regimental Combat Team and the 241st Volunteer Division constituted the advance force. They arrived via a pirate point after the initial naval engagement and secured the landing zones of the Twenty-fourth Army Group. [4]
Battle of Caph[edit]
For the attack on Caph in 2776, the Fifth and the First Regimental Combat Teams along with the Tenth Volunteer Brigade were formed into the 2400th Provisional Division and assigned to the CCXL Provisional Corps. The Fourth and Fifth Fleets carried the division to Caph and bombarded the SDS batteries and AEAF bases before dropping the division onto the planet. It immediately engaged Republican forces that had been positioned outside the largest and most strategic fortifications, allowing them to be targeted from orbit or by the two supporting air groups. The defenders countered with nuclear strikes destroying the Tenth Volunteer Brigade. The two RCTs hung on long enough for the reinforcements of the Third Army to land. [5]
