Plot summary

Lieutenant Charles Vincent "Charlie" Bane is a MechWarrior with the 3rd Sirian Lancers. Piloting his family heirloom Dervish he took part in an ill-fated assault in which his battalion tried to destroy a munitions factory near Gunster on the Lyran world Ford. However, the attacking forces were lured into a trap and scattered or destroyed. When his lance walked into an ambush Bane fled.

Arriving at the pickup point on 10 April 3022, Bane finds the dropzone was overrun and the DropShip The Liberty Bell has boosted off, leaving him behind.

Charlie decides to redeem himself by carrying out his appointed mission after all. He figures that now that he might achieve surprise; the trap has been sprung already. Indeed, when he reconnoiters the facility on foot eight days later there are only light tanks guarding it. Diving his 'Mech into the wide and murky Cuyahoga river allows him to approach the facility undetected and launch a surprise attack. A defending Grasshopper intervenes, but Bane wades into the center of the factory complex and causes as much damage as possible before he is taken down.

Two days later he is questioned by a Lyran officer. Bane takes some pride in the fact that the Lyran interrogator insists that such a skilled MechWarrior would not have been abandoned and refuses to believe his (true) story.
