Colonization
Colonization
Addicks was settled by English, French, and Greek colonists from Terra. The world was blessed with fertile soil, large freshwater lakes, and abundant mineral resources. The colonists were quickly joined by mining companies that took advantage of the world's easily accessed resources. The planet didn't just have industrial concerns, however; many farming communities were also established. These colonists didn't arrive as one large group but rather as several smaller groups, and the two largest groups of initial colonists both claimed to be the primary colony established on the planet. This led to confusion over even basic details like the names of the continents, even after the Terran Hegemony selected one particular set of naming conventions for official use.

During the first Star League Addicks was home to Tauken Weapons Systems, a company that specialized in combat vehicles and personal weapons. The factories were purchased by Johnson Industries, but the Succession Wars destroyed them.

Amaris Civil War
During the height of the Star League Addicks had developed into a thriving world with a large population and a significant industrial output and was a fairly major world within the Terran Hegemony. In common with other such worlds across the Hegemony, the Star League Defense Force had built several Castles Brian across Addicks and there was still an SLDF garrison in place when Stefan Amaris launched his coup that began the Amaris Civil War on the 27th of December 2766.

Amaris had detailed a substantial force of Rim Worlds Republic force to subdue Addicks, but the initial attacks on the 27th of December failed, leaving the SLDF forces still in control of the bulk the Castles Brian and determined to resist. The Republican forces resorted to the extensive use of weapons of mass destruction to prepare the way for their ground assaults, and as a result the civilian population of Addicks suffered greatly, as did the local infrastructure. The exact death toll incurred in the Republican campaign isn't known, but estimates place it anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands.

Addicks became a forward logistical base and headquarters world for the AFFS. The AFFS basically turned the entire Sparro continent into one large AFFS facility. Many of the AFFS bases and installations found on Addicks were found underground. The MIIO also established a Regional Command center on Addicks.

First Succession War
The Capellan Confederation launched a small-scale offensive against the Federated Suns in early 2787, intent on capitalizing on the AFFS focus on the large-scale invasion being conducted by Coordinator Minoru Kurita and huge numbers of Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery units. The Capellan attack involved three waves of planetary invasions, each targeting three former Terran Hegemony worlds that had been annexed by the Federated Suns; the first wave was complete by August, and the second by October. Addicks was one of three worlds hit in the third wave, along with Ankaa and Small World. The invasions were a success and Addicks was under Capellan control by January 2788.

During the Dark Age the continents of Frankalia and Asukel were home to large farming communities. Aaron Sandoval served in the planetary legislature on Addicks after his discharge from the Republic Armed Forces, serving as a senator before being elected Planetary Governor in 3127. Addicks was one of two worlds garrisoned by the Third Principes Guards during the years after Fortress Republic was established. The Third finally abandoned Addicks in 3142 when the Federated Suns claimed it and the other remaining unaligned worlds in the region. By 3145, the planet had been annexed by the Draconis Combine.

Addicks has four continents, the names of which are subject to some controversy due to the manner in which the planet was colonized. According to the official taxonomy established by the Terran Hegemony, there are two equatorial continents, Frankalia and Auskel, one located in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern; a third continent, Landersia, is in the northern hemisphere, while the fourth continent lies in the southern hemisphere and is named Sparro. The alternative names for the four continents used by the second group of initial colonists persisted in use until at least as late as the thirtieth century; under that naming convention Frankalia is known as Bureigo, Auskel as Silesia, Landersia as Tauken, and Sparro as Loknar.

The Addicks system is the location of at least one habitable planet, Addicks IV, and as of June 3152 was located in the Ashio Prefecture within the Dieron Military District, of the Draconis Combine.

System Description[edit]

In addition to the presence of Addicks IV, the Addicks system has also been home to at least one recharge station; during the thirty-first century, a recharge station was present at the system nadir jump point.[1]

System History[edit]

The Addicks system has changed hands repeatedly since it was colonized at some point prior to the Age of War.[3] Incorporated into the Terran Hegemony at some point prior to the founding of the Capellan Confederation, Addicks would remain a Hegemony system until the fall of the Star League.[4] After the fall of the Star League, the Addicks system fell on the border between the Draconis Combine and Federated Suns, and repeatedly changed hands.[5][6][7][8][9]

Addicks IV is the fourth planet in the Addicks system and is commonly known simply as Addicks.[1][2] Addicks has been host to defense manufacturing industries belonging to at least two companies, Tauken Weapons Systems and Johnston Industries, and several Castles Brian.[2]

Planetary History[edit]

Colonization[edit]

Addicks was settled by English, French, and Greek colonists from Terra. The world was blessed with fertile soil, large freshwater lakes, and abundant mineral resources. The colonists were quickly joined by mining companies that took advantage of the world's easily accessed resources. The planet didn't just have industrial concerns, however; many farming communities were also established.[2] These colonists didn't arrive as one large group, but rather as several smaller groups, and the two largest groups of initial colonists both claimed to be the primary colony established on the planet. This led to confusion over even basic details like the names of the continents, even after the Terran Hegemony selected one particular set of naming conventions for official use.[1]

During the first Star League, Addicks was home to Tauken Weapons Systems, a company that specialized in combat vehicles and personal weapons. The factories were purchased by Johnson Industries, but the Succession Wars destroyed them.[2]

Amaris Civil War[edit]

During the height of the Star League, Addicks had developed into a thriving world with a large population, a significant industrial output, and was a fairly major world within the Terran Hegemony. In common with other such worlds across the Hegemony, the Star League Defense Force had built several Castles Brian across Addicks and there was still an SLDF garrison in place when Stefan Amaris launched his coup that began the Amaris Civil War on 27 December 2766.[17]

Amaris had detailed a substantial force of Rim Worlds Republic force to subdue Addicks, but the initial attacks on the 27th of December failed, leaving the SLDF forces still in control of the bulk the Castles Brian and determined to resist. The Republican forces resorted to the extensive use of weapons of mass destruction to prepare the way for their ground assaults, and as a result, the civilian population of Addicks suffered greatly, as did the local infrastructure. The exact death toll incurred in the Republican campaign isn't known, but estimates place it anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands.[17]

First Succession War[edit]

Addicks became a forward logistical base and headquarters world for the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns during the Succession Wars. The AFFS basically turned the entire Sparro continent into one large AFFS facility. Many of the AFFS bases and installations found on Addicks were found underground.[1] The Ministry of Information, Intelligence, and Operations also established a Regional Command center on Addicks.[66]

The invasions were a success and Addicks was under Capellan control by January 2788.[21]

Jihad[edit]

In April 3068, a combination of Word of Blake forces and mercenaries in their employ raided numerous worlds close to Terra, including Addicks.[67] The Blakists followed this up with a planetary assault in the second week of August 3069, quickly conquering Addicks and incorporating it into the Word of Blake Protectorate.[7]

Addicks was liberated by April 3077, by troops fighting as a part of Group IV of the Federated Suns front of Operation SCOUR, led by Khan Phelan Kell of Clan Wolf in Exile. Addicks was one of four planets which made up the first wave of the Federated Suns campaign,[68] and the campaign to liberate Addicks was actually brought forward by a month due to the success the Twelfth Vegan Rangers had during their recon raid on Addicks in early 3077, where the Rangers nearly routed the Blakist defenders on their own.[69]

After the many centuries of war on Addicks, the world's agricultural output was severely reduced. It could grow enough to feed its citizens but not enough to feed surrounding systems.[1]

Dark Age[edit]

During the Dark Age, the continents of Frankalia and Auskel were home to large farming communities.[2] Aaron Sandoval served in the planetary legislature on Addicks after his discharge from the Republic Armed Forces, serving as a senator before being elected Planetary Governor in 3127. Although he relied on personal charisma and the Sandoval name to push through legislation, he was popular with the working classes on Addicks and elsewhere.[70] By 3130, Danielle Paterson had taken the post of planetary governor.[2]

As of 3120, it was estimated that up to 60% of animals on Addicks were carriers of Kellington's Disease, leading to quarantines, testing, and possible culling of animals leaving the world.[71]

Through 3130, labor unions under the influence of industrialist Jacob Bannson, seeking for control of Addicks to be transferred to nobles in Prefecture IV, carried out a series of strikes. Exarch Damien Redburn allowed a referendum on their demands, and due to the planet's reliance on economic ties to other Prefecture III planets such as Ozawa and Towne, the population rejected the transfer.[72]

On 18 June 3132, Senator Kev Rosse announced the results of a Republic Geological Resources survey of Prefecture III. Republic Geological Resources had made the largest find in its history: a vast supply of high-grade crude oil on Addicks, in the western portion of Sparro.[73] Over ten billion tons of oil awaited extraction,[74] and Rosse immediately directed prefecture funds towards resource development. Environmental groups, such as the Addicks Environmental League, questioned the new interest in Addicks and its resources.[73]

On 3 November 3132, the faction known as Dragon's Fury launched an assault on Addicks to capture the planetary oil fields.[75] The Fury's attack on the Weyland Industrial Complex near Neo Cartagia was repulsed by forces from the Northwind Highlanders, stationed near the oilfields by Tara Campbell in anticipation of just such an attack.[76] Reconstruction began soon after the Dragon's Fury withdrew. Knight Stephanie Hoover arrived to survey the damage and reassure the public, promising extensive assistance.[77] Some of the planet's thousands of refugees slowly came back and faced distrust and retribution,[78] while some elected not to return.[79] The Highlanders surged in popularity for defending the planet and for helping rebuild in the months immediately afterwards, but Tara Campbell's work programs for residents in need caused some controversy. The Society for Interstellar Conscience questioned the focus on military-oriented projects that directly aided the Highlanders themselves.[78] Federated Suns military engineers provided reconstruction assistance as well.[80] Oil development, meanwhile, gained popularity as Weyland Industrials' hiring surged.[78]

The oil fields would be contested again in April 3133, when the Spirit Cats successfully defeated the Highlander contingent who'd managed to hold off the Fury several months before.[81][75]

Sometime close to November 3134, Wyld's Jokers raided the town of Marlinspike, only to be fended off by the local Standing Guard and a lance of armed miners soon called the Marlinspike MuckRakers.[82]

Addicks was one of two worlds garrisoned by the Third Principes Guards during the years after Fortress Republic was established. The Third finally abandoned Addicks in 3142 when the Federated Suns claimed it and the other remaining unaligned worlds in the region. By 3145, the planet had been annexed by the Draconis Combine.[61] [9]

In 3149, Addicks was targeted by the Republic Armed Forces during Operation ERUPTIO. Incorrectly expecting a full-scale invasion, the Fourth Dieron Regulars proved easy prey in their fixed defenses for attacks aimed at their support networks and command staff. By the time the RAF attackers withdrew the Fourth Dieron was leaderless and facing considerable civilian resistance.[83]

Geography[edit]

Addicks has four continents, the names of which are subject to some controversy due to the manner in which the planet was colonized. According to the official taxonomy established by the Terran Hegemony, there are two equatorial continents, Frankalia and Auskel, one located in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern; a third continent, Landersia, is in the northern hemisphere, while the fourth continent lies in the southern hemisphere and is named Sparro.[2] The alternative names for the four continents used by the second group of initial colonists persisted in use until at least as late as the thirtieth century; under that naming convention Frankalia is known as Bureigo, Auskel as Silesia, Landersia as Tauken, and Sparro as Loknar.[1]

The world has a very dense atmosphere that is difficult for visitors to breathe. Despite the extra effort visitors require to inhale the thick atmosphere, the atmosphere itself isn't tainted.[1]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Black Woods: hundreds of kilometers of forest situated at the southern edge of Johnson City[31] and northwest of Saint Randall[96]
  • Carlton Beach: on a Landersian shore[97]
  • Felldowns[citation needed]
  • Fort Lucien: headquarters of the Addicks Draconis March Militia, just outside Johnson City[31]
  • Lake Jasmine: 350 kilometers south of Saint Randall[96]
  • The Loyd Sea: off the western coast of Sparro[73]
  • Jesara Plains: a region on Landersia[74]
  • Johnson City[31]
  • Marlinspike: a mining town[82]
  • Neo Cartagia: spaceport city located on Sparro[2]
Hesperus: a suburb approximately 40 kilometers north of Neo Cartagia; as of 3132, it was primarily populated by aerospace industry workers[98]
  • Saint Randall: capital city of Addicks, located on Landersia[2]
  • Sea of Landersia[97]
  • The Sunderlands: suburbs south of Saint Randall[99]
  • Tauken Militia Training Facility: active as of 3133[100]

Notes[edit]

  • The site of the 3132 battle is spelled Neo Cartagia in Era Digest: Dark Age[75] but Neo Carthagia in Dark Age: Republic Worlds.[2] Because the Era Digest is the later publication, its spelling is considered canon.
  • The location of the 3132 Addicks oil deposit is inconsistent. Dark Age: 3132-3134 INN places the deposit on the southern continent of Sparro,[73] while Gambit: The Battle for Addicks! places the deposit on the northern continent of Landersia.[97]Era Digest: Dark Age, a later publication, places the oil deposit near Neo Cartagia, on Sparro.[76]
