Planetary Information

Covered by active volcanoes, Altais was settled for its large amount of radioactive ores. These ores were spewed out of the planet's surface by the volcanos. Within a century of humanity's arrival, a small meteor slammed into the ocean near a tectonic fault line. The resulting earthquakes lasted for decades and destroyed several major cities.[1]

Since that time, the volcanoes have continued to spew greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, raising the planet's surface temperature by twelve degrees in 500 years. Thousands of native plant and animal species have been driven to extinction by the severe climate change, and the jungles and prairies that attracted the original settlers have been replaced by rock-strewn wastelands.[1]

In the War of 3039 Altais was garrisoned by the 1st Ghost and 2nd Ghost regiments. They faced the 8th Donegal Guards, Dragonslayers, and Gray Death Legion in the first wave of the Commonwealth Thrust. Though the Ghosts fought well, they had to withdraw after two months of fighting.[27] The world would be isolated in the DCMS counterattack, however, and in November 3039 the LCAF withdrew.[28]

Between the 7th and 14th of August 3068 Altais was one of six worlds raided by a combination of small 'Mech units under the employ of the Draconis March of the Federated Suns and teams of Federated Suns commandos. The deep objective raids targetted undefended worlds, allegedly to find and liberate prisoners of war in captivity within the Combine since the FedCom Civil War. The six worlds targeted were Altais, Barlow's Folly, Beta Mensae V, Chichibu, Junction and Misery, and apparently some POWs were discovered.[29]
