Planetary History[edit]

Reunification War[edit]

War between the Star League and the Magistracy of Canopus was inevitable after the Magistracy joined the other Periphery nations in rejecting the Pollux Proclamation; when the war began, Bethonolog was a key trade hub for the Magistracy of Canopus, and in December 2579 was targeted for conquest by the Star League Defense Force task force led by Captain-General Marion Marik. The task force had faced setbacks earlier in the war, and was proceeding slowly in 2579, making sure that planets were targeted with overwhelming numbers of troops to reduce the effect of any resistance; as a result, on 3 December 2579, SLDF forces consisting of the Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Brigades supported by the Second Orloff Grenadiers and the Third Regulan Hussars landed on Bethonolog under the overall command of SLDF General Mancini.[8][46]

Mancini expected to face resistance on Bethonolog and was already preparing plans for the assault on those positions held by the planetary militia when he received a message from the commander of the Canopian forces on the planet; the message stated that the militia Colonel intended to resist the occupation, but requested that the SLDF give permission for the military campaign to not begin until the 26th December. He further requested that the SLDF task force honor the spirit of the season by allowing the local population to enjoy Christmas, Chanukah, Al Hijira and Moharram, the traditional holidays of the various major religions on Bethonolog. Mancini agreed, and went so far as to have a Christmas pudding delivered to the militia commander; the Colonel responded by sending Mancini a bottle of the local wine and a turkey. When the military campaign finally began over the New Year, it lasted just a week and was half-hearted; despite this, honor was satisfied on both sides and the SLDF formally took control of the world from 9 January 2580.[8] Although Bethonolog would be occupied until the end of the war, it remained a part of the Magistracy unlike the majority of the worlds occupied during the early years of the war.[9]

Fall of the Star League[edit]

During the final years of the Star League, Bethonolog was the host to the SLDF Fifty-fifth Infantry Division.[47]

The El Giza Ghost Riders mercenary unit abruptly abandoned a contract with the Free Worlds League, resulting in arrest warrants issued on charges of dereliction of duty and prompting the Mercenary Review Board to impose sanctions barring anyone from hiring them. Unwilling to surrender to the League, they fled to the Periphery as they attempted to take refuge in the Marian Hegemony. Ordered to provide tribute to Imperator Marius O'Reilly in exchange for clemency in the Hegemony, the uneasy Ghost Riders were forced to turn to piracy, raiding the Magistracy of Canopus. In early 3020, the El Giza Ghost Riders struck the largely agricultural world of Bethonolog, with the First Canopian Fusiliers under the command of Colonel Kimathi sent to defeat them.[48]

Dark Age[edit]

The Third Canopian Cuirassiers were sent to garrison Bethonolog, an agricultural world with large storehouses, which had become a common target for mercenary units employed by former Free Worlds League worlds.[49]
