Planetary History
The capital of Budingen, New Jordan, is located on the world's primary continent; this continent is prone to stormy autumn months followed by long and brutal winters. In the 26th century Budingen was a water-rich mining world and member of the Outworlds Alliance. By mid-2582, the neighbouring world of Santiago had been under Draconis Combine occupation for a decade as a result of Directive 21, issued by Ian Cameron in 2572 in response to the military build up in the Alliance. Of the other worlds nearby, Schirmeck and Weisau had been annexed by the Star League in 2581, and troops from the Combine had occupied Valentina early in 2582. The Star League was determined to incorporate the Outworlds Alliance into the League by armed force following the mass rejection of the Pollux Proclamation by every major Periphery state in 2575, and it was inevitable that Budingen would find itself under attack.[3]
That first wave of that attack came in July 2582, when Tai-sa Elliot Keita arrived in the middle of the stormy season leading the 4th Benjamin Regulars. Present on Budingen at the time was the 2nd Regiment of the Pitcairn Legion, commanded by Samantha Milton-Jones, and the Regulars ran headlong into the Legion troops within hours of landing. The storms aided the Legion in resisting three seperate spoiling attacks from the Regulars, letting the Legion fade back out of contact only to reappear elsewhere, keeping constant pressure on the Regulars.[3]
Keita and his troops were unable to establish where the Legion forces were operating from, so Keita instead targetted the civilian population of Budingen, beginning with the settlements of Brenda, Montezuma and Saratoga. The first attacks left dozens dead and hundreds without shelter in the face of the autumn storms and successfully drew the Legion into pursuing the Regulars. The 1st Battalion of the Legion forces caught up with the Regulars in the Ruby Valley and managed to keep two battalions of the 4th Benjamin Regulars pinned while the other two Legion battalions struck directly at the Regulars' base camp, supported by light armor and infantry forces. By the time the extended battle was over, the Ruby Valley was in flames and the Legion forces had reduced the Regulars' base to a shambles, including leaving two of the Regulars' DropShips heavily damaged.[3]
The surviving forces from the Regulars responded by relocating to New Jordan, creating a new base within the center of the city, occupying homes and business and forcibly ejecting hundreds of civilians from the city before riding out the long winter months. The Legion forces spent several weeks constructing shelters in the settlement of Minneola for the thousands of civilians displaced by the Combine forces actions across the continent, but ended up leaving Budingen in September to avoid being trapped on the planet for the entire winter. The Combine had effectively occupied Budingen in five weeks.[3]
The 4th Benjamin Regulars took advantage of an early thaw in 2583 to strike directly at the civilian population, destroying thousands of head of cattle and killing hundreds of civilians as they burned dozens of towns and villages to the ground. This, combined with the long winter months, effectively broke the population of Budingen; Colonel Milton-Jones brought her regiment back to Budingen in February, and realised that she had little chance of freeing Budingen without more troops. The Legion forces struck at the new base the Regulars had constructed outside New Jordan as well as at the unit heaquarters within the city itself, but despite destroying both targets and inflicting heavy damage on one of the Regulars' battalions, withdrew from Budingen to instead strike at Bad News.[32]
The 4th Benjamin Regulars remained as the garrison force on Budingen until Budingen was formally ceded to the Draconis Combine as a part of the terms laid out within the Treaty of Cerberus on the 1st of August 2585.[6]
WarShips from Clan Snow Raven assaulted and captured Budingen during the first two weeks of May 3069.[23]
Notes
The original Star League sourcebook indicated that atrocities against Outworlds Alliance civilian populations and the General Order from General Amos Forlough to discourage rebellion on occupied worlds by decimating the population began as a result of the events on Budingen.[33] This has now been contradicted by Historical: Reunification War which indicates that the resistance on Medron in 2581 was the flashpoint for the General Order, and that by the invasion of Budingen in July 2582 atrocities had already been widely conducted on worlds such as Valentina.[34]
In the Star League sourcebook, the planet's name was spelled as Budigen. In later publications, it would be changed to Budingen.[35]
