The Defiance Self-Protection Force (DSPF), or Defiance Security Force[citation needed], is the unit charged with protecting the factories of Defiance Industries.
During the FedCom Civil War, they supported Katherine Steiner-Davion's Lyran Alliance and took heavy losses fighting against the Skye Rangers on Hesperus II. They were subsequently reformed into Brewer's Legion.

History
Formation
The Defiance Self-Protection Force was raised in 2852 by Baron Ivor Brewer, in order to defend the Defiance Industries facility on Hesperus during the campaign that became known as the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Battle of Hesperus II. At its inception, it consisted of around a battalion of factory-fresh BattleMechs with not even a coat of primer on them, piloted by volunteers and factory workers who had at least a basic training as MechWarriors.
This force of last resort confronted Draconis Combine forces that closed in on the fortified factory complex in the Myoo Mountains, after Combine forces having previously established space superiority and established an orbital blockade of the planet. Literally a force of last resort, the DSPF actually managed to stall the enemy ground forces and set them up for orbital bombardment from the LCS Invincible which had broken through the orbital blockade. Thus, the attacking forces were vanquished. One 'Mech assembly line had been destroyed in the fighting, but it was back to working order within a year.
Their sacrifice was so valiant that Baron Brewer would keep the BattleMech unit active in honor of the fallen warriors.[1]
Fourteenth Battle of Hesperus II
On 5 March 3028 an assault lance of the DSPF (consisting of an Atlas, Zeus, Flashman and Griffin, incidentally all 'Mech designs built or maintained on Hesperus II) was deployed to the remote Kincaid Defiance Industries complex together with a LIC molehunter team investigating apparent organized theft of Double Heat Sinks. Just before the investigation could be concluded, McCarron's Armored Cavalry staged a raid against the facility on 21 April; the DSPF lance fought among the defenders.
The official story was that it had been a grudge raid, after CEO Simon Kincaid had taken money from the mercenary unit but failed to deliver the unspecified goods (an implicitly illegal deal, given that McCarron's Armored Cavalry was closely associated with House Liao who were enemies of the Lyrans' close allies, the Federated Suns). It is unclear if House Steiner ever learned that in truth, it was an extraction raid for Simon Kincaid who had been collaborating with House Liao and jumped ship as he was about to be found out. Kincaid had actively sabotaged the defenses and personally killed LIC agent Schröder by destroying the DSPF Zeus Schröder was piloting during the fight. The specific fate of the other DSPF 'Mechs was not mentioned, but the raid was considered a success, implying they were destroyed or at least defeated.
Civil War
During the FedCom Civil War, Skye Separatists would work to cripple the factories of Defiance Industries on Hesperus II. The only defenders of the attack were the Security Force and the Gray Death Legion Mercenary Unit, who managed to put up a good defense. While the attack was successfully repelled it came at heavy cost, the Defiance Self-Protection Force would take heavy losses and the Legion was effectively destroyed in the process. Fortunately, survivors of the fallen mercenary unit would re-form as a part of the Protection Force under the name of Brewer's Legion.[citation needed]
Jihad
They would serve as Defiance Industries main security force until their destruction by the Word of Blake during the Jihad.[2]

Colors and Insignia
The original "Force of Last Resort" from the 2nd Succession War was completely unpainted, lacking even the factory undercoat or layer of primer.[5] Following their organization into a formal unit, the Defiance Self-Protection Force painted their equipment in dark red and gold. The battalion insignia is a picture of the Twentieth century fictional Mad magazine mascot Alfred E. Newman, with the quote "What me worry?" on the logo.[1]
Uniforms
The Uniforms of the Defiance Security Force is the same of the LCAF infantryman, but with white and blood red colors instead.[1]
