Derrick Gray was the commanding officer of the First Albion Training Cadre as of 3050.[1]

Leftenant General Gray, serving with the First Albion Training Cadre, was stationed on Morven in 3050 and on Broken Wheel by 3062.[1][2] Gray believed that his responsibility for the First Cadre also meant that he was responsible for its graduates, leading to his development of a unique training schedule intended to prepare students for the ever-changing realities of service in the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns.[2]
When the Federated Commonwealth Civil War came to Broken Wheel on 29 October 3063, it was in the form of the Katherine Steiner-Davion-aligned First Brockton Training Battalion and Filtvelt Academy Training Battalion hoping to crush Gray and his soldiers for their support of Victor Steiner-Davion. While regional commander Albert Carson was also pro-Katherine, he was severely opposed to the destruction of a unit so vital to the defense of the Broken Wheel Combat Region, even as his own intelligence and operations officers assisted the rogue academy units in their hunt for Gray's Cadre. Just as the Katherine-loyal forces prepared to attack Gray's command center, Gray's own forces ambushed and captured his enemies' commanding officer, scattering the hostile force's units and allowing the First Albion to pick them apart at its leisure. When Gray returned to Carson's headquarters with the enemy commander in tow, he declared his loyalty to the Federated Suns above all else, earning free reign within the Broken Wheel CR in order to defend against pirates and outlaws so long as the Civil War lasted.[3]
