The Dover system is the location of at least one inhabited world, Dover IV, and as of 3145, is located in the Benjamin Prefecture of the Benjamin Military District, within the Draconis Combine.[3][4]

System Description[edit]

The Dover system is located near the Dyfed and Peacock systems[5] and consists of a class G2V primary orbited by at least four worlds. During the thirty-first century, a recharge station was in place at the system zenith jump point.[1][2]

System History[edit]

The Dover system was colonized during or shortly before the Age of War.[6][7]

Dover IV - more commonly known simply as Dover - is the fourth planet in the system and has a single moon named Citrine. The surface of Dover has been host to a number of institutes of higher learning as well as a number of significant industrial concerns, while the Dover Shipyards operates in low orbit above the surface of the planet.[1][2]

Planetary History[edit]

Dover was first settled in 2390 and by the Star League era had reached its height as a mining and research world. The abundance of silica and titanium sands, and the pure chemicals resident in the Silane Sea, enabled laboratories to make breakthroughs in several fields, while Dover's orbital dockyards serviced a constant flow of DCA and Star League ships.[1]

The planet's fortunes took a great turn for the worse during the First and Second Succession Wars, with most of the labs and many mining complexes being destroyed and the orbital shipyards reduced to small concerns capable of providing maintenance to DropShips and JumpShips.[1]

Dover served as the site of the People's Reconstruction Effort academy established by Zabu Kurita in 2821, but this facility was destroyed during the Shadow War in 2865. In 2910, the surviving faculty and equipment from Ashio PRE University was relocated in Dover. From this basis Coordinator Shinjiro Kurita ordered the establishment of the Dover Institute for Higher Learning, which fueled a small revitalization for Dover as military industry followed in the Institute's wake. While primarily civilian oriented, the Institute ran a MechWarrior training program and would later add the same for both JumpShip and DropShip crews during or shortly after the Jihad.[40][41][1]

The Aerospace and Interstellar Institute Officer's School was also established on Dover at a secret location (generally believed to be somewhere on Rutile) and was kept distinct from the Dover IHL facility.[2]

In the years following the Clan Invasion Dover received another industrial boost as Stellar Trek Enterprises expanded one of the shipyards and opened asteroid mines, putting Dover on track to become the local R&D and industrial hub once more.[1]

Dover's Irish population was also noted as providing one of the Combine's three most sought-after guilds of professional assassins.[42]

Jihad[edit]

Intelligence reports from the Republic of the Sphere indicated that as of mid-3081, they had managed to trace the Combine mobile assembly sites as far as Dover. These immense construction ships had been built as an emergency measure by the Combine during the Jihad, as a result of the damage being inflicted on the Combine's military industry by the Word of Blake, and represented a huge tactical advantage for the battered Draconis Combine over their neighbors.[43] The reassembly and recommissioning of the Yamato prototype battleship into a mobile factory by the Dover Shipyards orbiting above Dover brought a degree of muted fame to the shipyards and in the late stages of the Jihad, the Dover Shipyards began expanding by beginning construction of a DropShip factory on the outskirts of Kalkedony, intending to produce both Overlord and Nekohono'o-class DropShips in the system.[2]

In the wake of the Jihad, new military factories were being constructed on Dover; while the construction was being undertaken under the strictest secrecy, the Republic of the Sphere managed to confirm that the new factories wouldn't be active until at least 3083.[44]

Due to Dover being a world covered in high quality silica sands perfect for electronics manufacturing, the sands were used extensively, but the bright white sands were blinding to off-worlders, so many DropShips landed, loaded, and took off without ever allowing a crew member to leave. In addition, the Silane Sea in the center of the continent of Quartz is unique in that it possesses pure chemicals that were ideal for export to electronics manufacturing concerns throughout the District.[2]
