The Eleusis system was the location of at least one habitable world, Eleusis VI, and as at 3145 was an independent world located close to the borders of the Duchy of Andurien and the Magistracy of Canopus.[3][4]

System Description

The Eleusis system is located close to the Obrenovac and Ruschegg systems.[5][6]

System History

The Eleusis system was colonised at some point during the First Exodus or shortly before the Age of War.[7][8]

Eleusis VI

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Eleusis VI - more commonly known simply as Eleusis - is the sixth planet in the Eleusis system.[1]

Planetary History

Reunification War

Though a sultan funded the public works project that built the lake system, Muslims only account for a third of the planet's population. These religions still debate whether a government should be in the hands of the church or secular authorities. The other major religions on Eleusis are animism and worship of the Greek goddess Athena.[1]

The atmosphere of Eleusis is tainted and can only be breathed safely for a few hours a day. To counteract this every building has large air-conditioning and purification systems and the residents wear filtration masks when they travel outside.[1]

Eleusis joined the Magistracy of Canopus at some point prior to the end of the Age of War, and was an important jump route nexus; when war finally came to the Magistracy after the mass rejection of the Pollux Proclamation, Eleusis escaped the first wave of attacks, but by mid-2579 had become a target for the Star League Defense Force task force invading the Magistracy. Under the command of Captain-General Marion Marik the SLDF task force assigned the Fifty-seventh Brigade and the Sixty-first Royal Brigade to conquer Eleusis, reinforced by the 401st Independent Regiment, the Thirty-fifth Royal CAAN Marine Regiment - all drawn from VII Corps - the 5th Marik Militia and the 1st Brigade of the Fusiliers of Oriente from the Marik auxiliaries supporting VII Corps.[2][9]

The SLDF expected the garrison of Eleusis to consist of two 'Mech regiments and half a dozen conventional regiments; however, in yet another of the complex shell games of deception and counter-move that had characterised the Magistracy Armed Forces campaign during the first year of the war the MAF commanding officer, Colonel Adam Buquoy, had prepared several surprises for the SLDF.[2]

The first surprise came when the SLDF arrived in-system and captured the cargo waystations at both jump points and the zenith recharge station, only to find that the computers at all three had been extensively sabotaged, giving the SLDF no information on JumpShip or DropShip movements within the system.[2]

The second surprise came three days into the operation; the DropShips transporting the ground forces were approaching the turn-over point on their burn towards the planet when a MAF fighter-carrier made it's presence known in the system. The MAF ship had been running silent a million miles closer to the sun than the SLDF transport fleets, which were still clustered around the two main jump points within the system. The carrier had launched squadrons of fighters which launched a surprise attack on the SLDF JumpShips, damaging the jump sails of sixteen assorted vessels severely and crippling the drives on another five before the SLDF escort WarShips and attached fighters managed to drive the MAF fighters off. Although none of the transport vessels had been destroyed, enough damage had been done to strand a number of the ground units in-system.[2]

The third surprise came when the SLDF forces grounded on the planet and discovered that there were far more MAF units on Eleusis than they had prepared for. While the SLDF contingent still held a numerical advantage, the waiting garrison consisted of all of the Chasseurs á Cheval less the Fourth Canopian Light Horse and the mercenary unit Samuelson's Slaughterers, along with no less than eighteen conventional regiments, all under the command of Colonel Ann-Britt McMillan. It was the first opportunity the Chasseurs had been given the opportunity to operate as a large-scale formation, and Colonel McMillan's forces proceeded to turn what the SLDF expected to be a simple two-week campaign into a six-month long game of cat and mouse.[2][10]

The various Canopian Light Horse regiments had spent the years prior to the Reunification War engaged in anti-terrorist operations, and when not engaged in direct battles following the first days of the SLDF invasion they had been busily raiding SLDF garrisons. The Light Horse experience at small-unit actions, raiding and terrorist operations helped them inflict more damage on the SLDF forces than they received in return; unfortunately, the MAF couldn't draw on the huge supply chain that the SLDF benefitted from, a supply chain which allowed the SLDF units to constantly make good their losses. Although McMillan's forces could potentially have held out until the end of the year, tying the SLDF units up for three months in addition to the six they'd already been on-world, McMillan received orders from Buquoy and the Magestrix on the 19th of September ordering her to pull the MAF forces off Eleusis. By the time the SLDF finally occupied Eleusis, the battle had been the largest and most costly of 2579.[2]

Despite having to concede Eleusis in 2579, the MAF returned to the system in 2582 when a raiding party based around Samuelson's Slaughterers attempted to hit the SLDF transport fleets operating from the system. Unfortunately for the MAF, the raiding party ran into a trio of SLDF naval squadrons; the MAF forces managed to retreat from the system, narrowly avoiding losses in the process.[11]

The Magistracy of Canopus had thirteen worlds annexed by the Free Worlds League, either during the Reunification War[12] or by Star League decree in 2602,[13] and Eleusis was one of these worlds.

Planetary Locations

Eleusis is best known for the vast system of lakes, ponds, and streams that cover its surface. When seen from orbit this pattern resembles the shape of a passage from the Koran owned by the Sultan who sponsored the work. These lakes are a popular tourist attraction, stimulating the economy of this world near the Periphery.[1]
