Emerson
System Information
X:Y Coordinates171.57 : -115.57[e]

The Emerson system is the location of at least one inhabited world and as at 3145 was located in the Kathil Operational Area of the Capellan March within the Federated Suns.[1][2]

System Description

The Emerson system is located near the Beten Kaitos and Smolensk systems.[1][2]

System History

The Emerson system was settled during the First Exodus from Terra and was a part of the Muskegon Empire and the Chesterton Trade Federation before the founding of the Federated Suns.[3][4][4][5]

Early History

Emerson is a harsh and marginally habitable world but rich in resources, first discovered by explorers from Muskegon in 2177. Despite how unwelcoming Emerson was, it was still marginally more habitable than Muskegon, and became the site of a colony created by deportees - a mixture of criminals and political prisoners - from Muskegon, ruled with an iron fist by the Commander of Muskegon via his appointed governor.[3]

The colony on Emerson managed to survive and grow, with the raw materials from both Emerson and the nearby world Muskegon colony of Beten Kaitos fueling the founding of colonies on other worlds. In 2195 a trade ship from the Chesterton Trade League made contact with the colony on Emerson, and the governor of Emerson gave permission for the colony to become a member of the Trade League. The Commander of Muskegon hoped that Emerson's entry into the Trade League would allow the world to act as a port of entry for trade between the Muskegon Empire and the worlds of the Trade League. The Commander anticipated that the resulting funds obtained from high government tariffs on trade would make the venture worthwhile.[3] Emerson would continue to be ruled by the Commander and his descendants, although discontent at the harsh governance of the world continued to grow and finally reached a breaking point in 2318. That year, Commander Jehan Achmeed decided to merge the seven-world Muskegon Empire into the newly-formed Federated Suns; this was the catalyst that saw Emerson rise up in revolt, declaring their independence and petitioning to join the nearby Chesterton Trade Federation. The population of Beten Kaitos elected to declare their independence as well, joining Emerson's petition for membership of the Federation.[4][5]

The Federated Suns moved to occupy both worlds, only to find that they couldn't hold either world when troops from the Chesterton Trade Federation landed. Three years of warfare followed, with both Beten Kaitos and Emerson changing hands several times, before the worlds were finally and firmly in the hands of the Trade Federation. This military defeat at the hands of a smaller nation - although the Chesterton forces were assisted by Tikonov troops under the auspices of the Tikonov Grand Union - generated a reputation for weakness which would mark the Federated Suns for decades.[5]
